She’s so sincere. She’s truly grateful for her audience. She’s not “off” here; she’s stone cold sober. This is her first performance after getting clean. She had no idea if anyone would come see her perform after her previous performances, but obviously they did and they love her!

It was not her first performance after getting clean, but her first tour. She did several shows before, in the US and in Netherlands. No one captures a DVD on a first show with a new band and a new album after years without performing.

@@tagadabrothersband You have most of your facts correct but if I’m reading correct you thought she was sober for years and she had only been sober 3to 4 months at most and what’s so astonishing is how her voice healed and has got exponentially better over the years. Now her biggest hurdle she overcame is smoking and the voice still gets better

I don't know if I buy that one. I would prefer to think she was high she's acting really goofy and I've never seen her act like this any other time when she was sober so I find it hard to believe that she's sober here!

BRILLIANT REACTION. You analyzed and communicated more insight into Beth Hart before she even sang her first note than at least 40 others I’ve seen react to this same song. After watching BH for the first time, many reactors are left speechless which, although entirely understandable, is not a great look for people who are supposed to react, describe, and explain. Michal, you have a great persona and, like Beth, an authentic disposition and manner of interaction. So, what’s great about your analysis? You make the following observations (from 3:55 to 5:18 mark), about Beth before she’s even sung her first note (paraphrasing here): “she’s so cute; endearing; guarded; Janis Joplin-like; a live wire of energy; she wants to connect; naked emotionally.” Then, “you can tell she’s not totally ok; exciting-an element of danger; seems like she’s a little bit crazy, “off,” there’s a thin line between genius and madness; hard to be someone that talented; in-touch your emotions; she’s gonna leave everything out there on the stage, so vulnerable, it allows you to connect to her…” Man, you’ve come up with over two dozen precise observations before she really started to sing! …a testament to your intellect, skill, and experience here-much appreciated. Since this performance is so ineffable, many can manage only an astonished “Wow, that was great.” Where she is in her “personal journey” at this point: see separate comment for this. Then, after Beth’s first note, you mention: “the ‘tremulousness’ in her voice [yes, perhaps a better description than ‘vibrato’-or is this different?]; a sexy, sensual sense of discovery; and the musicality of her scatting ‘like a horn.’” You deduced all this from essentially 40 seconds of vocalization-and this is before she explodes like a fire hose with “am I the one.” You keep your mouth shut and just absorb the experience. Thank you At the 10:03 mark, you note: “…so much power; the delicious rasp; dirty, a performance on another level of experience; soul; wisdom; satanic growl; ‘she has so many colors in her voice’.” Point is, you continue with another two dozen astute observations. A reaction commensurate with its subject. Wow, that was great.

COMMENT #2: To your question about where she was in her personal journey at this point-basically, rising from the ashes. This was early 2004, and she had been working her way back from a near total collapse from drug addition, mental illness, and personal and career implosion since an Icarus-like flirtation with stardom following her 1999 hit “LA Song.” (Of course, this had to be at the pre-ordained age of the 27 club). She was then quickly dropped from Atlantic records but able to find an audience in northern Europe in the early 2000’s. In spite of everything, she had been managing a “comeback” tour in Europe in late 2003 (following the release of her ‘Leave The Light On’ album) and this May 2004 concert was a planned ‘concert film’ in celebration of, sort of speak, her gaining an increasing control and success in her life. She states during this concert that she had been clean and sober for four months. It was a start. See comment #3 for suggestion to react to.

Wow... Just subscibed. I think you're the first person who honestly described what I hear in this performance. It was a one time melding of vocal talent and raw emotional release... perhaps driven by the fact that this was her first real performance after a several month isolation for her recovery program. The emotional release she displayed is, from my perspective, completely understandable. Well done for recognizing the inherant emotional contributions...

I love that you commented about her being "off". Ben commented below about her being clean and sober here, but in later interviews, Beth talks about her severe bipolar disorder, and in my opinion, this performance is total mania. I own the DVD, and if you watch from the beginning, you can see her progress into this state. I find it painful to watch her here, in spite of her tremendous talent. I don't like that "little girl" tone she gets in her voice, as that's not really her when she's "okay". I love this honest reaction, and if you really want to see a much healthier Beth, please check out "I'd Rather Go Blind," or "I'll Take Care Of You" with Joe Bonamassa. They're phenomenal together.

That woman is a friend of hers😀 I read somewhere on the internet. The Paradiso in Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful pop podiums I know. I lived for 30 years in Amsterdam and in the last 10 years I was almost visiting a concert every other week as I worked around the corner. Did you know that she is also a very sweet person. In Brussel when she left the pop podium Ancienne Belgique 3 hours after her show ended some fans were waiting for her. Immediately a lot more people came running when she started to give an autograph and shoot a picture with fans. Her husband organised a line and she didn´t stop until everyone was helped. That photo I will always treasure and Beth Hart too.

In reguards to where she was in her journey at this point...This was one of her "come back" shows.. She happened to have a film crew with the band at the time doing a Documentary of Beth. At the time this was supposed to be a small bar show. But Paradiso also happens to have this larger theatre that they do shows in. They over sold the bar tickets so they opened up the concert hall. It sold out in hours. Beth and band were not expecting to play to a crowd this size. Hence the remarks at the beginning of the show. Remember this is one of their "Come Back" shows after Beth had quit heroin and been in a hospital where she was diagnosed with a really bad case of bi-polar disorder. There is an entire Concert video of this night they caught on film that they have released. Beth Hart Live at Paradiso. She excised her demons on stage that night. If you are a Beth Hart fan this show is a must see. She left everything she had on that stage that night and there is footage of her directly after the show. The adrenaline is still pumping threw her veins and you can see it in her eyes. She has the look of a soldier who has just been through battle they call it shell shock. She is on the verge of shock but the adrenaline is keeping her going. Her pupils are pinpoints and she is just vibrating with energy. At the time she is completely sober no drugs or alchol. Def a must watch concert you can find it on youtube its about a hour and half long. Great reaction one of the best Ive seen to this song. Well done.

You touched on it when you said "drug free" and "bipolar disorder"... as a lifelong, bipolar vet, I recognize a manic episode in another easily. @@moniqueleroux2198 I'm calling it an "urban myth"...I just see this so frequently it's unnerving. It may not be so but that idea that she's a friend having a birthday just seems so disconnected to the evidence before your eyes (and that seems to be a particular problem for people these days). My thinking here is that Beth is so far out of the box that people have a hard time processing her behavior--aligning it with their own sense of what's normal--that they manufacture a reasonable explanation to account for what they see. Of course, I don't really intend to mount an anti-urban myth campaign about this but maybe some rational counter-protest will take hold...you want the job? One security guard...I didn't notice that...There's another performance, it may have been Moscow or Kiev (not sure) where a few of the male audience members take way too much advantage to the extent that it veers into the groping category--could have used that security then....

I think it must have been someone she knew. The whole portion where Beth is holding the stage and dancing Sonya (Sonja?) is holding the microphone.

Try I'd rather go blind live in Amsterdam with Joe Bonamassa, a more mature Beth and an unbelievable performance!

Everybody knows KZbinrs check the songs before shooting their reaction videos, it would be honest to tell it. You pressed on "stop" after she said the last word of her spoken intro, so unless you're a diviner you couldn't have known it was the last.

She’s making love to the audience the same way Robert Plant did in Led Zep.

This was about 7 or 8 months into her recovery I believe. She was stone cold sober and clean. It was a stunningly raw and emotional return to performing .

She is not sober here!
@johnjohn37371 Жыл бұрын
@@chadhansen9504see is ABSOLUTELY sober here, to a point of detriment...she was of off everything at this point, including her bipolar meds...being bipolar myself, it's easy to recognize someone else going through a manic episode. When you are unmedicated (and don't believe the TV commercials, being medicated for your swings sucks...24/7 zombie mode), it's hard to fight the depression and manic episodes. I'm quite sure she is aware that she's being eccentric in her behavior, but manic episodes feed on manic behavior...I personally think she handled it brilliantly...

This is not a good song for a first listen to Beth. It puts people off thinking she is high. ( she isnt)
