I think it’s so funny that I’ve seen kids saying “mcr and fob aren’t REAL emo” recently when I was bullied and called emo, not specifically bcuz of the music I listened to, but bcuz of how I presented myself. Any alternative kid in the early/mid 2000s was probably called emo regardless of what music you listened to lol. And I really doubt most bullies would have stopped and asked me “are you listening to mcr or american football?” before calling me emo, so this weird new gatekeeping shit is so insane to me. It’s just an umbrella term to me and always has been? Happy you made this vid tho bcuz this discourse has been driving me INSANE lately

Why did 'screamo' get renamed as 'skramz'? because the genuine screamo people where getting tired of being lumped in with metalcore bands by the main stream media. Therefore, even though metalcore isn't *technically* part of emo, it is vastly important to it's history. Also there were some bands labeled as 'metalscream' that combined metalcore with emo/screamo

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. When I was younger and more elitist and gatekeeping (it was somewhen around mid-2010s and last half of 2010s) - I was the one of those guys who enjoyed arguing about straight borders between genres and subcultures around them, the same was with emo/screamo - I also used to tell people what real emo is even if I wasn't really into this music (but yeah, I'd prefer real "emotional hardcore" and screamo more than what it has become in 2000s when I was a child), but the more I grew up - the more I understood that (and that's only my opinion, might be wrong) it doesn't make sense. No, I'm not that type of "wise" guys who'd say "genre doesn't matter", or "labeling doesn't matter" - it matters, but let's be honest with ourselves - who listens to emo/screamo mostly, nowadays? Hardcore dudes and punks. Let it be the part of this, it shouldn't really care about all this pink alt stuff fron 2000s and early 2010s - and it doesn't care. Let the pink alt stuff be "emo" or whatever it wants to be called, who cares?

I was shocked when I realized a few years down the road what the youth were referring to as emo was MTV popular. Good for them.

this idea of midwest emo being defined by guitar virtuosity and time signatures or whatever is purely due to the popularity of american football, which as a band was a huge diversion from the original bands that defined the genre, causing math rock/emo fusion. also perhaps some bands in the 90s/early 00s screamo scene doing a lot of guitar wankery too and that influence overlapping with UG emo.

I would postulate something much simpler: Emo was a label slapped on a group of indie/post-hardcore bands in the 90s. It has no defining features or look because it was applied by record label suits after the fact as they were trying to manufacture more copy cat bands. “Emo” only became a fashion statement in the 2000s. The music had nothing to do with the post hardcore bands of the 90s. Essentially…Emo became a name of a haircut.

A lot of this is on point but the Orange County eyeliner and black flat ironed hair look that 18 Visions were doing (along with Avenged Sevenfold and some others) was more Misfits and arty 80s deathrock inspired. The tight clothes were probably a rebellion against the ultra baggy skater/pop punk attire that proliferated throughout the 90s.

Modern alternative culture as a whole has just become a mass of people playing victim olympics while coopting an aesthetic styles. These younger kids have no idea where goth, emo, scene, etc. actually come from and how they can differ and even overlap. They wear the clothes, have piercings, tats and colored hair, but have no connection to the difference scenes many of us grew up with. Back then you could basically tell who was a hardcore kid, who was into post hardcore/pop punk, who the goths were, the scene kids, death metal people, who liked grunge, etc., even the juggalos hung out with us lol a lot of us were still friends though and there was lots of overlap in mutual bands and music we enjoyed. These days, I see someone who’s “alt” and immediately think that everything will trigger them into some crazy sociopolitical rant about who has privilege, who’s oppressed, someone about racism, feminism, and the patriarchy, and wear band shirts they dont even listen to. They basically cosplay as something they were never a part of or experienced. I mean, apparently it’s trendy now, but when I was younger, people like that were avoided and were the “weird” kids. It wasn’t really something we did to show off. If anything, despite the look, we really didn’t want unwarranted attention in a lot of cases because it led to harassment, bullying, we were labeled as evil and satanic lmao We went through some stuff just for being ourselves. In a way, dressing like that helped a lot of us find our “tribe” so to speak. If you saw another “alt” person, chances are you’d get a long and have a lot in common right off the bat, making social interactions easier. To en fair, many of us had hard lives and bad homes, so we also had others who could in some ways actually understand us.

It's almost like, when the whole f***ing point is, "be emotional," you get ridiculous incarnations. That said, scene is a goddamn abomination.

It's Eighteen Visions, not 18 voices lol 😂. Hilarious to think 2000s emo was Myspace glam rock & arena metal- everything that punk railed against in the 1980s. For punk, a true case of you either die a hero or you live long enough to become a villain (and become what you hate). Emo, just like metalcore, became detached from punk and metal, and became their own scenes.

Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

It cracks me up that Ian MacKaye and Guy Piciotto, who played in one of the greatest bands ever (Fugazi), accidentally helped spawn two of the most insufferable sub culture ever: emo and straight edge.

Emo culture IS the problem. Never connected to the ethos of hard core , nothing street in it , no values, just a industry way to earn from boys in tights like they did in the 80's with hair metal. Literally the same people sat in the music company rooms and discussed how to get back into rockstar pocket since everything else was tapped out. And Prmba approach to it was - well it was a gateway into music, it sold a lot of merch , it made bands popular etc.. fuck that . Nothing punk about it all and 🖕

There was never an emocore... thats a modern term people are applying to hardcore bands who were more melodic with thoughtful lyrics. Alot of the the other "emo" bands being discussed were referred to as "indie" at the time they were around, like braid, promise ring. Referring to a person as an "emo" is also a term that started to be used in the last few years. People used to talk about "emo kids" back in the 2000's, to refer to the phony swoosh-hair-white-belted-hipster phenomenon. Also Refused... emo? No way. They were an anarchist mod-stylized hardcore band- with lots of influence from Nation of Ulysses and The Make Up. Sorry but this video was created by someone outside of the punk scene, and so only gives a very surface and inconsistent "history" of what has come to be called emo. Emo is a commercial term, not something many bands or fans ever referred to themselves as. Also "scene" is not a subculture related to emo, its related to being a "hipster". If you want to use the definitions of outsiders to understand the varieties of punk rock, indie, or whatever, go ahead. If you want to actually understand it, go listen to Fugazi, Rites of Spring, Into Another, Quicksand, Moss Idol; or for more modern examples go check out Orchid, Saetia, Pg. 99, The Blackout Terror, Circle Takes the Square,Yaphet Koto; or the crust punk variations like Fall of Efrafa, Tragedy, His Hero is Gone, or newer bands like Habak.

At 8:47 you meant 18 Visions (not Voices). It's interesting that you state them as an impact on the fashion aspect to what'd later be termed "emo" in contrast to the hyper masculin hardcore roots of the term. To me 18 Visions along side their peers Bleeding Through (the O.C. Hardcore/Metalcore scene) always were a more fashionable niche of the 2000s metalcore branch that combined the masculine aspect with a (more or less feminine viewed) sense of fashion. It could be compared to the hair metal era (e.g. Mötley Crue). Whereas the San Diego scene seemed to me as a harsh contrast to the hyper masculine hardcore scene.

Ya wanna know what real emo is? Real emo is what happened when a bunch of kids who were music nerds who took piano lessons and all that sorta thing, got into punk as a way to rebel against that, and then when punk started dying and hardcore started dying, they still wanted to play in bands and decided they wanted to make music like Morrissey and the Smiths and emo grew from that want to continue making music but have it be something more substantive than screaming for change. It was the dirty secret of hardcore that most of those kids like The Smiths and The Cure and when hardcore died and they didnt need to X up their hands anymore, they could finally embrace their real musical inspirations and make the kind of music they really wanted to and that is how emo was born.

pop punk emo has two sides…. the emo trinity was more derivative of dark, anti-capitalist /anti-fascist & queer literature & film- with my chemical romance’s 3 cheers for sweet revenge being a rock opera concept album inspired by works like phantom of the paradise (1974) & the southern gothic short story A Rose For Emily by William Faulkner & Panic!’s debut album having an aesthetic ripped from Moulin Rouge & their next album being a love letter to poet Arthur Rimbaud… it’s much less “i hate this town & my life is shit” …. it’s theatrical because it’s camp. it’s glitter and gore and myspace galore lol we love to see it
