Any alternative kid in the early/mid 2000s was probably called emo regardless of what music you listened to lol. And I really doubt most bullies would have stopped and asked me “are you listening to mcr or american football?” before calling me emo, so this weird new gatekeeping shit is so insane to me. When I was younger and more elitist and gatekeeping (it was somewhen around mid-2010s and last half of 2010s) - I was the one of those guys who enjoyed arguing about straight borders between genres and subcultures around them, the same was with emo/screamo - I also used to tell people what real emo is even if I wasn't really into this music (but yeah, I'd prefer real "emotional hardcore" and screamo more than what it has become in 2000s when I was a child), but the more I grew up - the more I understood that (and that's only my opinion, might be wrong) it doesn't make sense. No, I'm not that type of "wise" guys who'd say "genre doesn't matter", or "labeling doesn't matter" - it matters, but let's be honest with ourselves - who listens to emo/screamo mostly, nowadays? Hardcore dudes and punks. Let it be the part of this, it shouldn't really care about all this pink alt stuff fron 2000s and early 2010s - and it doesn't care. this idea of midwest emo being defined by guitar virtuosity and time signatures or whatever is purely due to the popularity of american football, which as a band was a huge diversion from the original bands that defined the genre, causing math rock/emo fusion. also perhaps some bands in the 90s/early 00s screamo scene doing a lot of guitar wankery too and that influence overlapping with UG emo.
@linktojinx18 күн бұрын
I remember that band refused. They literally had only two songs that were even halfway listenable or decent, yet for some reason they have all this popularity. I cannot complete a single other song on that one album that the two good ones are on. I think it's called new noise or something and one of them starts with a t and has a violin and it sounds like it's going to build up into something epic but then it just completely drops off and turns into repetitive crap

Ya wanna know what real emo is? Real emo is what happened when a bunch of kids who were music nerds who took piano lessons and all that sorta thing, got into punk as a way to rebel against that, and then when punk started dying and hardcore started dying, they still wanted to play in bands and decided they wanted to make music like Morrissey and the Smiths and emo grew from that want to continue making music but have it be something more substantive than screaming for change. It was the dirty secret of hardcore that most of those kids like The Smiths and The Cure and when hardcore died and they didnt need to X up their hands anymore, they could finally embrace their real musical inspirations and make the kind of music they really wanted to and that is how emo was born.

I would postulate something much simpler: Emo was a label slapped on a group of indie/post-hardcore bands in the 90s. It has no defining features or look because it was applied by record label suits after the fact as they were trying to manufacture more copy cat bands. “Emo” only became a fashion statement in the 2000s. The music had nothing to do with the post hardcore bands of the 90s. Essentially…Emo became a name of a haircut.

At 8:47 you meant 18 Visions (not Voices). It's interesting that you state them as an impact on the fashion aspect to what'd later be termed "emo" in contrast to the hyper masculin hardcore roots of the term. To me 18 Visions along side their peers Bleeding Through (the O.C. Hardcore/Metalcore scene) always were a more fashionable niche of the 2000s metalcore branch that combined the masculine aspect with a (more or less feminine viewed) sense of fashion. It could be compared to the hair metal era (e.g. Mötley Crue). Whereas the San Diego scene seemed to me as a harsh contrast to the hyper masculine hardcore scene.

Modern alternative culture as a whole has just become a mass of people playing victim olympics while coopting an aesthetic styles. These younger kids have no idea where goth, emo, scene, etc. actually come from and how they can differ and even overlap. They wear the clothes, have piercings, tats and colored hair, but have no connection to the difference scenes many of us grew up with. Back then you could basically tell who was a hardcore kid, who was into post hardcore/pop punk, who the goths were, the scene kids, death metal people, who liked grunge, etc., even the juggalos hung out with us lol a lot of us were still friends though and there was lots of overlap in mutual bands and music we enjoyed. These days, I see someone who’s “alt” and immediately think that everything will trigger them into some crazy sociopolitical rant about who has privilege, who’s oppressed, someone about racism, feminism, and the patriarchy, and wear band shirts they dont even listen to. They basically cosplay as something they were never a part of or experienced. I mean, apparently it’s trendy now, but when I was younger, people like that were avoided and were the “weird” kids. It wasn’t really something we did to show off. If anything, despite the look, we really didn’t want unwarranted attention in a lot of cases because it led to harassment, bullying, we were labeled as evil and satanic lmao We went through some stuff just for being ourselves. In a way, dressing like that helped a lot of us find our “tribe” so to speak. If you saw another “alt” person, chances are you’d get a long and have a lot in common right off the bat, making social interactions easier. To en fair, many of us had hard lives and bad homes, so we also had others who could in some ways actually understand us.

NIN, Pearl Jam and Nirvana had nothing to do with EMO. NIN was a synth pop, industrial project that was influenced by Gary Newman and Throbbing Gristle. Nirvana was a post punk band in same vein as the Melvins and Sonic Youth. They were all covered in the same underground and punk zines back in the day before they blew up. Make a video about power violence since you snubbed screamo and emo violence in this vid

HEROINE MENTIONED 🔥🔥🔥 also tysm as an emo myself who is emo because of skramz screamo music for talking about and covering screamo / skramz also emo violence is such a bad term (bad as in it just sounds cringey and poorly made and is not as good as the term screamo + skramz music)
