Although I've already made videos on the topic of black metal, I wanted to do more of a deep dive on Varg himself in more detail, as I feel his childhood and life after prison emain extremely relevant to the story and the character of Varg. I also just dislike much of the previous videos, so wanted to do the topic justice.

This is a good video, but there were a few innaccuracies. Necrobutcher actually left Mayhem just before Deads suicide, Necrobutcher constantly lies and contradicts himself in interviews. Yes, I have to agree ... So much of what he says are obvious lies and exaggerations... I've heard what he says about his recording sessions and there's a lot of things that he says there that doesnt add up. He present himself as a revolusionary in recording technics and said that Pytten, his recording engineer, was awestruck about his ideas about shifting his single bass drum on the tape so that it would be a double bass drum on the final tape. That's such a simple trick that I highly doubt Pytten, working with recodrings wouldn't know about it. Such obvious lies tells alot about a person ... That said, Burzum are unique and I'm so glad for the albums he has released. The songs really resonates in my soul.

I don't think anyone denies that Burzum's actual music across the first four albums was groundbreaking and shaped black metal. But Varg is like Kevin Spacey. The latter is a great actor who had some amazing roles, but he's such a piece of fecal matter in real life that I can't watch his work. Same applies to Varg and Burzum. I agree with you, though I don’t begrudge others like the person above from being unable to separate the artist from the art when they find the artist abhorrent. I personally think that much of what was in Varg’s heart back then was in the hearts of many of the others in that scene, something that Øystein not only approved of, but encouraged. I mean, that guy was pretty terrible about the self-end of his “friend” Per and all of his judgment about what was true kult and what were appropriate expressions of what it meant to be “black metal” kinda caught up to him. There was a lot of indoctrination put onto a group of otherwise pretty lame, somewhat outcast-type kids that gave them meaning. Knowingly or not, Øystein was using tools that are used both by cults to indoctrinate the vulnerable and by the military to shape the young into soldiers who can kill. Øystein helped create the culture and the values of that group; Varg’s behavior, to a degree, can be seen as the avenging hand of that group over Øystein’s failure to be the figure he painted himself as.

It's difficult being a burzum fan. Varg as a person is a dangerous and intimidating man and a piece of shit tbh, but he is a very talented musician. To deny that is to be ignorant. As a teenager I got really into Black Metal, largely due to Norway's 90's scene with all the violence. Because I was fucking 16, I found it all very mysterious and intriguingly evil and fascinating. Especially Varg, whom I found very interesting though I never liked the racism. Around 2014 in some history nerd's sword video I made fun of some raving nationalist and he called me a Jew as an insult. Considering my teenage years, it was a really fucking weird moment to find out the buffoon was none other than Varg himself :D

The main reason why people ''support'' Varg is because his impact in the black metal community. While Varg himself turned out to be about (what kids nowadays calls sussy) I can't deny that his early influence is unremarkable. The early Burzum albums are one (or not if) the most important black metal albums in history, even if later he turned out to be quite a jerk.

I've never heard Varg say any race is inferior to another but I constantly hear him say each race is evolved for their native environment and we all thrive more when we stay in our indegineous homelands and avoid mixing races. He simply believes we should be separate peoples. If a black person said they believe their people would be better off in africa and staying away from other races, nobody would call that racist.
