When I found myself hyperventilating to a friend while sharing an update on my life recently, I had to catch myself. She seemed like she was trying to extend grace but I also felt like a disclaimer would have helped.
“Am I toxic dumping on you? Is my emotional state throwing you off?”
But we have to learn to when to catch ourselves, because even if we’re going through the most (and let’s face it, a lot of people are), we need to be cognizant of the other persons (or other people’s) bandwidth and emotional state. You could be fueling their triggers, in trying to address your own.
And if you feel that your friend, partner, colleague or family member isn’t venting to you in a healthy way, express it early before it draws a gap that might be hard to close 🙏🏾 (more at foundcare.org)
