Ashley Johnson who played Ellie's mother is the actress who gave her voice and body scan for Ellie's caracter in the video game back in 2013. She was the perfect choice for playing Ellie's mom.

Joel's smile when Ellie is feeding the giraffe says so much about what he's feeling there. He sees her as his own daughter when looking at her now, but not as Sarah. In the beginning he didn't want to take the job because he saw Sarah in her and it hurt him.

Marlene never gave Ellie that choice… if she asked Ellie with Joel in the room then things i’m sure would have turned out a lot differently. Ellie was willing to give them a cure but not die… she tells joel she’d “follow him wherever you go” so she definitely expected to leave that place alive. Joel shouldn’t have lied to her, but he didn’t want to lose another daughter again, and they didn’t give him a choice to be peaceful. he knew ellie might die whether it works or not, without her consent.💔

yea that's right it's not black or white either way. both sides had their own agenda. even if u ask Ellie she's only 14.... would u let a 14 Yr old decide to sacrifice her own life coz she thinks she might save the world? ultimately she's still a kid. Joel made a choice for her (and also for himself) like pretty much any parent would

Ellies birth was never shown in the video games but the game alluded to the fact that Anna and Marlene were close friends but never mentioned Marlene taking Ellie after she had to kill her mother. But Marlene missed a big clue about how to make a cure because she knew Anna was bitten. Anna also told her that she cut the umbilical cord before she was bitten. Marlene failed to realize that Anna lied to her. Something extraordinary likely had to happen to explain Ellies immunity. It was not a coincidence that Anna was bitten and Ellie had immunity.
@clonexx
@clonexx Жыл бұрын
Exactly. When Marlene found out that Ellie was immune, she had to realize that Anna had lied about cutting the cord before being bit. Otherwise there’s no way Ellie could have the markers she does. What happened to Anna is recreatable, so Ellie being unique isn’t technically true. Of course finding a pregnant woman about to give birth whose willing to take a bite and then either lose the limb or die, and also sacrifice their newborn child, would be exceedingly hard if not impossible.
@helifanodobezanozi7689
@helifanodobezanozi7689 Жыл бұрын
Actually I think you two are missing some MAJOR foreshadowing. Marlene knew Ellie's mom was lying about the bite in the same way Ellie knew about Joel's lie. As you said, she chose to believe the lie from a loved one. The Fireflies probably watched baby Ellie for a while to make sure she didn't turn. They also wouldn't have known she was immune until after they found her in the mall as a teen. Even then, if you remember the first episode, she was under observation and testing by them still even at that point.

@@Stosszahlansatz In the game Marlene never says they didn’t tell her about it killing her, if I remember right. So I believe Ellie knew it would have killed her. You are smoking some hardcore Copium. The damn creators of the game even said that it is 100% ambiguous with NO definitive idea of Ellie's interpretation. Stop trying to cope with the fact that Joel is a horrible person, has admitted to it and will continue to be a horrible person. It's OK to root for the bad guy. Ever watch Breaking Bad? Walter White was practically a serial killer.
@clonexx
@clonexx Жыл бұрын
@@jacket5456 For one, I said “if I remember right” which means I don’t remember for sure. Second, I don’t read interviews or watch videos of the devs, so I’d never know what their intentions were. Third, I’m not trying to cope with anything. Im well aware of what kind of person Joel is and I’m perfectly fine with it. He sacrificed a good amount of security for all humankind and murdered a bunch of people to prevent having to relive the loss of his daughter and end up killing himself. That’s a selfish choice by any metric. Finally, whether Ellie knew or not, she still would have chosen to go through with it and Joel knows that.

About the point of asking Ellie if she wanted to sacrifice herself: that would be the right thing to do because she has the right to know but Marlene wanted to spare Ellie about the grusome details or was afraid she would say no. that opens up another can of worms if your Marlene or Joel. If Ellie says no I'm not sure if Marlene accepts that. If Ellie says yes then what about Joel. Maybe Ellie can convince Joel to accept it but he likely wouldn't by stopping the procedure or doing what he almost did.

For a show about a "zombie"-apocalypse, the infected take a surprisingly small role. They appear in barely half the episodes and only for short moments, the real danger almost always being people, those that are supposed to be good. I had not seen a lot about the game, and this show still managed to surpass my expectations. I've never seen a series or a movie break people as much as this one, almost every episode. It's so well made, and I hope Season 2 will be just as good (if not better).

Whilst I knew a few tidbits from the first game, such as Sarah's death occurring on the night of the outbreak and that the story centred around Joel guiding Ellie across country and forming a father-daughter type bond along the way, I haven't actually played the games, so this series has been quite the journey. Ellie's birth scene was amazing... and tragic... and scary... and beautiful... and really interesting as the likely source of her immunity. What a devastating thing for Marlene though. They certainly were very different people, but like Joel, Marlene was someone hardened by this world. I love that they then opened up with Ellie's trauma and the change in her personality, hard as it was to see. It is realistic, though, the experiences she has had over the previous months would undoubtedly damage a person. Especially a teenager, their hormone riddled bodies and brains being generally ill equipped to deal with their emotions as it is, haha. Some of the conversations in this episode were so well crafted. The one where Joel tells Ellie they can still turn around, go live a quiet life back at Tommie's, and she responds that they have to go all the way with their mission perfectly foreshadows Joel's conflict later in the episode. He knows Ellie would probably choose to die for a shot at saving humanity, but he just can't stand to lose her. I also loved the conversation where Joel discusses trying to kill himself. It was the most honest and vulnerable Joel has been with her throughout. I think he realised she needed that from him, but it was also something he wanted to give to her to show her just how much she meant to him. He was expressing to her that as dark and painful as it may get at times, you will find the light and the beauty again. You will find yourself again. That of course culminated in the moment where he indicates to Ellie that it was she that had healed him from the wound that was the loss of Sarah, she who had led him back to the light, the beauty, and himself again - such a touching moment. Seeing Joel come from being this person who was extremely closed-off and bitter to this moment of trust and hope was such a great representation of that healing and how far their relationship had come. The sound design on the hospital rescue scene (where Joel rescues Ellie from surgery) was amazing. The music was dominant, with the sounds of gunshots, shells pinging on the floor, the occasional agonised scream heard underneath it. That, and the music itself, created a great deal of tension and left a sombre sense in the air. This was no moment of triumph or joy and I think we got that same sombre sense from Joel in the car afterwards. Sure he saved Ellie, but he again had to kill to do it and he understands that he may have just resigned humanity to extinction. You can see in that moment that he's hugely conflicted and he knows that he acted somewhat selfishly. He also knows that Marlene was probably right in that Ellie would have given her life for a cure. Afterall, that's why he lies to her, right? But he still couldn't bring himself to let her go. Whilst we can all make the argument for why Joel should have acted for the greater good, I think we can all also understand why he didn't, so it's super hard to be highly critical of him. I think it's this that makes this ending such a compelling one. Joel and Ellie's final conversation was again brilliantly crafted. In opening up about Riley I think Ellie was essentially saying to Joel, "Hey, this is my deepest, most painful secret and I'm about to be totally honest with you about it, so I expect you to be the same when I ask you about what happened back at the hospital." She obviously has her doubts about Joel's story, but I think she so desperately wants it to be true that she's willing herself to accept it. Deep down, however, I think there's a part of her that knows he's lying. Please, no spoilers, but I can't help thinking that Joel's lie is going to come back to bite him in the second game/season. Through all this trauma and adversity they've slowly built a loving relationship on a foundation of openness and trust. This fact was really highlighted by the conversations they shared throughout this episode, so I suspect that trust will be broken when Ellie learns the truth about what happened at the hospital and that she still might hold the potential for a cure. Though it pains me to say, I think this will likely be a major source of conflict between the two next season. Anyway, this first season has been great. The writing, the music, the casting, the directing, the cinematography, the acting, etc, etc, etc has all been top notch. Special mention of course for Bella and Pedro, they've carried this story brilliantly. Thanks for your reactions, let's do it all again come season two.

Emotional overload is the best way to describe this episode: Joel's smile when Ellie laughed for the first then while feeding the giraffe, him opening about his gunshot wound to the head and how Ellie was the reason he finally healed from Sarah's death, both of them sharing more of their past lives while on the way to Tommy. Beautiful from beginning to end! The second season has already been confirmed and the creators said the second game will be adapted into 2 or more seasons, not just one. Furthermore, they acknowledged what you said about wanting more infected and action and they said we'll see more of that in the second season. I'd love to see you play the games if you have time and wanna do it, but no pressure on that front, do what you think it's best and like you said, keep in mind that the second game will inevitably spoil all future seasons for you. The good thing is...we'll keep seeing Pedro Pascal on wednesdays! Thank you for the wonderful reaction, you've been fantastic and that pure heart of yours must be protected at all costs ❤

Ellie is still a child. A parent (or guardian) is supposed to do what is in the best interests of child. The fireflies were wrong to want to kill Ellie for some hypothetical cure. Being a child, Ellie is not in a position to make the self-sacrifice-for-the-sake-of-humanity decision. Joel decides that Ellie deserve to have a good life (which is why they return to the commune) and he lies in order to remove the burden of survivor's guilt from Ellie so that she can have the best quality of life.

Ellie: So time heals all wounds does it? Joel: It wasn’t time that did it….. 😭😭😭😭😭 I played this game 10 years ago and to this day it is one of the single greatest stories ever told. I remember debating with other gamers for over a year about if Joel made the right decision or not. The question of “You have a chance to save the world but the cost is that you lose the person you love the most in the world after already suffering that pain before”. The answer, the REAL answer, is that both Joel and Marlene made the wrong decision, because that decision should’ve been Ellie’s to make. In the Last Of Us (GAME) podcast Neil Druckman talks about how Joel and Marlene had no right to take that choice away from Ellie. She would’ve said yes, and then Joel would have no choice but to respect her wish. She wanted the deaths of all the people she had lost, Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, to mean something. Even if it cost her her life. And even though a small part of her knows in her heart that Joel was lying to her she feels that she can’t let herself believe that the only person she loves in the world took away her chance to save the world. Also I love that Ashley Johnson got to play Ellie’s mom Anna. It was a beautiful full circle moment that the woman who plays Ellie in the games played her mother in the show. And it sucks that even though we have to wait a couple more years for season 2, it will be worth the wait! Or you can either play the game The Last Of Us Part 2 or watch the cutscenes put together of that game. Fair warning, if you thought this story was emotionally traumatizing, Part 2 will absolutely break you. Until then, Endure And Survive!

I’ve played the games, and the ending was always my favourite part of the whole story as it’s a topic still gets talked about a lot in the gaming community. It’s just so powerful, because it’s a morally grey scenario where you have no idea whose more in the right or wrong but you understand both sides. What Joel does is selfish and monstrous (from an alternative perspective), but what he does is what any person who loves their child would’ve done. You also emphasize with Joel cause we’ve seen his backstory. His life was destroyed after Sarah died, and while he was reluctant to bond with Ellie he just didn’t want to go through that again. But when he finally allows himself to connect with her, he makes it his life’s mission to make sure he never goes through that experience again. Ellie brought back apart of himself that was gone for years, and he wasn’t going to keep letting the world take away his loved ones. Even if he does a very questionable act that makes him look like the villain.

Those are the endings you continue to think about. I loved the way this game/season ended. You can see all sides. You can disagree with all sides. I completely agree with you Magy. I get so upset that everyone refused to give Ellie any agency. It should have been her decision. It’s understandable why they didn’t, but it’s so frustrating 😅

I like how Bella doesn't look like Ellie from the game. But she does look a little like Ashley who played Ellie. And so perfect to make her play her mom. And Joel did the right thing. People destroyed everything we're really not a species worth saving.

I'm about to talk about spoilers for the 1st game so read no further if you plan on playing the game. This was a great show but I do have some complaints. For the pacing was way too fast compared to the game. It seems Ellie and Joel traversed across the US in about 5 or 6 months whereas it took 1 year in the game. We had all 4 seasons in the game. Looking back if I could change anything I would not have spent an entire episode on Bill and Frank. But their backstory did add something new to the show but it took time away from the main plot. I would also have used only 1 episode for Kansas City. Ellie and Rileys story didn't have to be told but I would keep that because I knew that Ellie would tell Joel about what happened at the end like she also did in the game. Those who never played the game or dlc wouldn't have had the same emotional connection at the end similar to players who finished the game before the dlc was published. I also would have made what happened in episode 8 into 2 episodes because eventhough the David actor did a amazing job i think the game portrayed David a little better than the show because game David actually earned some of Ellies trust. David was soft spoken in the game and a infected group attack also contributed to give Ellue the impression that David could be somewhat trusted because she found out David had a hidden hand gun which he could have used to kill her at any time after she took his rifle away. They helped each other to survive. So I would have one episode introduce the David character as a decent man and the next episode reveal his true nature. And I would have added more infected because the tv show was significantly less dangerous than the game. And the relationship between Ellie and Joel felt rushed. The game did so much better establishing their relationship. The tv show didn't come close to what that game did. The show had the most important moments but the little moments were were absent because of how much time we spent with them in the game.

There’s two parts that likely led to Joel doing what he did. The main, primary and biggest reason is that he knows if he loses Ellie, he will kill himself. He can’t go through losing another person who is a daughter to him. So to Joel, Ellie is more precious than any “cure”. The second, is that it’s now been 21 years since the infection first hit. There aren’t that many humans left to worry about being bit and creating a larger problem. There’s already millions or even billions of infected out there that are still very capable of killing people outright, especially in hordes. So while removing the danger of a bite being fatal is really good, it’s not a solution to the bigger problem they face, which are the countless infected. Humanity would be far better off heading to places like Jackson, in what were the lesser populated places of the world, and settling there while going back to how we lived before cities were a thing. Living off the land, with a population that can actually be sustained by that land.

You should play the first game only. Its the entire first season basically. Then wait for season 2 to finish and watch that then play the second game. As for joels decision. I think he made the right choice at first. Saved ellie. But when ellie asked what happened he should have told her to wake up fully then well talk. Then id explain that the fireflies told me how they were going to try to make a cure and that it didnt make any sense. And when i questioned them they threatened to shoot me and tried to basically exile me to death by leaving me alone on thr highway with just a knife and my backpack. I also found out they didnt need you alive and they had to remove your brain to try and make a cure. One doctor alone can not do that. So i pulled you out. We cant go back. They faught to stop me and i killed most of them. I had to get you out of there. I am sorry. We will go back to tommys... he knows you are immune. Well keep our ears out for more fireflies and try to figure out a new path. Your journeys not over but it would have been if i left you there... and i would have died to had i not gone back for this car so there is that too.

While I agree the choice should ultimately be Ellie's, the problem is she is only 14. Minors typically need the approval of a parent for any life altering/ ending decisions. Therefore, Joel as a parental guardian (or the closest Ellie ever had) had every right to say no. Probably the best solution for the Fireflies would have been to wait until Ellie was 18 and allow her the choice. They probably could have spent the time studying her.

This is why the end of "TLOU is the most powerfull ending ever made.. A broken man who lost his daughter have to take on balance the future of the Humanity and the life of one girl, and he say "fuck" to humanity for love... This ep is 100% like the ending of the videogame, and this is totally normal; how can you do better than this ending? TLOU has made a lasting impression with this end - On this ep, The mother of Ellie was the actress who play Ellie on the game. - On Ep8, the friend of David (James) was the actor who play Joel on the game - On Ep4-5, the guy with Catelyn was the actor who play Tommy on the game. TLOU part 2 take place 4-5 years after TLOU part 1. So i'm not sure that the next season is for now... I'm afraid they let Bella Ramsey grow (I know, she has already 19 years, but if she look like she has'nt grow between part 1 & 2, it will be strange. I think TLOU part 2 will release in 2025-2026, but not 2024.

Hey magic magy i just wanna say that in my personal opinion The Last of Us is the BEST of tv writing and acting, and now my FAVORITE show ever. At the ending when Joel and Ellie was having a conversation about what happen at the hospital. I think Ellie knows that Joel is lying but she doesn't want to say anything because she love Joel as a father and she feels like she's gonna regret it when she says stuff that she doesn't mean. Overall I really like this show and I'm looking forward to watch season 2 even though it's gonna be more depressing because i have already play the video games. When you were watching Joel killed the doctor, well one of the nurses is actually Abby from last of us part 2 and Joel killed her father right in front of her face . I'm not gonna spoiled it but i can't wait to see your reaction in season 2. I'm not gonna lied I've been watching your videos since you uploaded last of us and i want to say that your reaction is so much fun to watch and i love the way you think.

I am sure many will disagree but the way I see it, Joel HAD to lie to Ellie. He felt he had to protect Ellie because if he would have told her the truth then one of 2 things were bound to happen. Either she accepted the lie and forgave Joel making her live with the guilt of withholding the cure to mankind in exchange for her life, or just the opposite, not forgiving Joel for what he did, breaking off their father, daughter relationship, and possibly losing another daughter as Ellie would try to return to Salt Lake City and sacrifice her life for the mere chance that the cure might be successful. Joel couldn't allow that to happen. In his mind he was protecting her from taking that chance. From again losing the one person that meant so much to him. Yes, Joel ultimately sacrificed himself for the sinns he committed, but at least he and Ellie got a chance to live 4 to 5 years together in relative piece and enjoy a little happiness together. As a father that has lost my first child... I would have done the same!
