This episode does Bill more justice than the game did, he fulfilled his purpose and had a happy ending. As a MASSIVE fan of the games I’m very happy they deviated.

What's even more special about the juxtaposition of the two versions of Bill is that they serve the same narrative purpose even though the trajectory of their counterparts result in the two portrayals being polar opposites of each other. Game Bill serves to show Joel what being emotionally guarded will lead to; a life of solitude with little to no meaning, whereas Bill in this episode serves to show us that being emotionally vulnerable and letting yourself love again will give you purpose and allow you to live a meaningful life. Both stories ultimately lead to the same path, but this tells us a beautiful bittersweet love story along the way; a testament to how incredibly well-written this episode was

I also like how, as much as Bill insists he doesn't like Joel, gives him all his stuff after he dies, gave him the code to his electified fence (likely not even Tess, considering the note), and told Frank to call Joel when he thought he was dying because Joel would take care of him. Bill entrusted Joel with everything he held dear.
@98tofuyi
@98tofuyi Жыл бұрын
@@clarkmichaels822 He ended up seeing himself in Joel, they are build from the same cloth. But as he said in the note, he eventually ended up opening his feelings because of Frank, while Joel kept himself closed (in the second episode Tess says to Joel that she never asked him to feel like she feels. She wanted something more but still respected Joel feelings of not being ready to open up again after Sarah). But Bill knew that Joel would do anything in his power to keep Frank safe because they are the same

The last thing Bill says to Joel in the game is something like, "Good. Now get the hell out of my town." And then we never hear about him ever again. Bill is just part of the plot to get Joel and Ellie a vehicle, so I don't mind that they made changes. In fact, I like the changes, and like you, next time I play the game, I will have this backstory on my mind as opposed to the 6 or 7 lines of dialog given about Bill's history in the game. They elude to some stuff and hint at others, but this episode literally spells it out and explores a lot deeper, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Very well written and very well acted by both men. Nick Offerman really pulled this off, and I thank his wife for pushing him into the role of Bill.

I'm a 51 year old Gay man living with MS. With the subtleness of the straw in Frank's drink, being unable to stand and do simple tasks like water his flowers, and the shaking of the hands to paint all brought me back to my own experiences. So beside the beautiful script and amazing story just the quiet hints of Frank's gradual decline was perfect. So I think he had MS. All the signs were there. And overall, a great job reviewing this episode. You've gained a new subscriber.

I was doing okay, just a bit teary-eyed. But then they started playing, "It Can't Last" (Ellie & Dina's relationship's theme) during the strawberry scene and the floodgates were open T_____T I then proceeded to also cry during the Joel & Ellie stuff at the end of the episode because they've started to bond in earnest and the road trip has begun and it's cute as hell T____T And then a window shot (like the title screen of the game and other moments) to cap it all off. What an episode!! VERY excited for the next ep as Joel & Ellie take the show on the road (literally lol)

Such a beautiful story.. Some small details = 1. Joel is wearing Franks clothes 28:00 from 13:33 2. Ellie finds Franks personal gun 27:45 9:35 You can see bill cover up the hole in a pervious scene. He notices 9:03 the hole is no longer covered up and assumes he caught some infected. 1:34 Joel is mourning Tess in his own way. This is later confirmed in the after credits "Inside the episode."

A few neat lil deets: As you noticed, Ellie takes Frank's gun. It is a Beretta Model 70. The exact gun that Joel gives to Ellie in the games. Joel & Ellie are now both wearing their iconic Summer outfits (although the flannel pattern isn't quite right for Joel, but close enough lol). The shirt Joel is wearing is the same one that Frank was wearing A safe combo note can be seen on a wall at the Cumberland Farms store The very first official snippet we saw from the show was a behind the scenes still from the scene where Joel & Ellie looking at a plane crash in the distance was actually. With their backs to the camera. Ellie finds a Mortal Kombat II machine. Druckmann really likes that game. In the Remake's version of the left behind dlc, we can even see a poster for it in Ellie's dorm room. In the games, the game Ellie fawns over was a fictional one (featuring a character called Angel Knives), called The Turning. This is also what Neil Druckmann called this comic book that he pitched to Image comics MANY years ago (he planned on writing and making the art by himself. He even made some mock pages). He was rejected by the publisher cuz they liked the idea but didn't love it. So he kept working on it. The story & characters of this comic book were a very early version of the story of The Last of Us, and the characters of Joel & Ellie.

It was a wild divergence from the game, but it was still a beautiful episode. As far as the symbolism of Frank's gun goes, I have a prediction for one of the coming episodes. We know that in the hotel in the next game-chapter, Ellie saves Joel from being drowned by an enemy by taking his gun and shooting the guy. This time around, Ellie will save Joel with the same gun that Frank tried to protect Bill with. It's too perfect for the TV series to not take that route. Who knows though, this series definitely likes to do the unexpected.

I assumed it's been about a month that Bill & Frank were dead since the radio came on with the 80's playlist right after Joel, Tess & Ellie left the Boston QZ. Joel said it was every few weeks that you had to reset it or it would play the playlist. That's how I got about a month, but it may have been slightly longer.

This was such a wonderful and beautiful episode and I'm really glad we got to see so much of Bill and Frank's relationship. On the other hand, I feel a bit robbed because I would have loved to see Ellie and Bill interacting with each other. That was just too damn funny in the game, how the sassy and rebellious Ellie annoys the grumpy, angry Bill. I still absolutely love this episode.

The difference between the game and the movie happens during that argument in the street. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all. In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life. In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up. Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. So he starts opening up a bit. Both Bill and Franks are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending.

*Spoilers to those who haven't played the game* It amazes me how Frank separated himself from Bill because of the way he was and that Frank would rather die alone than to spend time with him any longer, whereas in the show they had their conflict but they remained together. It's still nostalgic to me remembering the game events. But I gotta say I enjoyed this take on the show. It was emotionally strong.

well that was emotional and sadder and more feelings 😭💔😭 breaking my heart Goodbye Bill and Frank they are good people and too much love 🌈🌈💚💚 Can you imagine the difference and comparison of the video game and the series the last of us HBO first the video game the last of us part 1: Bill is alive but he feels very cold, distant and angry with the world and Frank is dead because he was bitten by the infected and committed suicide by hanging then ellie knows how to drive the car , Joel asks Bill that he needs a car and a battery , new weapons in the shotgun and the booby trap , then they travel to the school and then he found Frank's car and battery , then the Frank he leaves a note to bill but very angry hehe and in the end bill fires Joel and ellie but angry hehehe and also the game is not the looters because only the infected second the last of us HBO series: bill and frank both die to commit suicide and then leave a note for Joel that they need weapons and if he can take the car with batteries. Imagine Bill and Frank ask Joel that Tess is still alive but they don't know why she's already dead, that means they're already in heaven. Bill and Frank are surprised that Tess is dead and they're still mad at Joel 😱 well Joel and Ellie arrived late because the Bill and Frank couples are dead, there are no infected and no looters then everything has changed !! then make a video about the opinion and the argument of the comparison between the video game and the series in all the episodes when you finish the series talk no more so it was shocking 🤯🤯

the cairn was probably in remembrance of Tess - of his way of telling her goodbye, imo even though it was true it wasn't Ellie's fault for Tess, she seemed to stab Joel with it instead of using 'the game Ellie' way of handling it with some empathy Why would Bill let the guy into his house and give him food? He hated people. Which part in the gathering supplies section did it show 'any' desire to interact with people? did they cut a scene or two? How did they do strawberries from seed and get fruit the same year? Do you feel a connection between Joel and Ellie? They seem to still 'hate' each other, with Ellie being spiteful or resentful, and Joel becoming more neutral about her. Bill and Frank is a good side story

I’m going to get so much hate for this, but was this episode ACTUALLY necessary yall? Don’t get me wrong it was a really good story and I genuinely appreciate the changes it made but it’s a filler episode. If you skip it nothing’s different except now they got a truck. Again I enjoyed the episode I just wish it had more importance to the rest of the story. Traveling with bill had a far more direct impact on both Joel & Ellie than that letter did. Watching three people who passively hate each other but still have to work together to survive was so much fun I really wish we could’ve gotten that interaction from this show. Considering how emotional everyone seems to be with this version imagine how devastated everyone would be if they gave us this backstory but stuck with original ending of bill and Frank. And we still could’ve gotten that iconic Bill vs Ellie rival dynamic. Maybe I’m just biased because Bill was one of my favorite characters and I wanted him to be more involved than he was in this show. It’s frustrating because I genuinely liked the episode but I didn’t get nearly as much enjoyment nor emotional connection as everyone else seemed to because it just felt so inconsequential to the rest of the plot. If anyone can explain what I’m not understanding please let me know because I enjoy enjoying things but I just don’t get the hype for this episode.
