NOTHING could have prepared me for Bill and Frank. I am still recovering and rehydrating. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey continue to shine as Joel and Ellie, but it was Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett just completely owned this episode with their performances. One of the best single episodes of television I have ever seen.
I am a not a gamer (except a mean round of Mario Kart in '03), and I had never played nor ever heard of the game The Last of Us before HBO Max turned it into a show. Needless to say, I am now completely hooked after seeing the first three episodes.
I'm excited to see where this show goes, and I hope that you'll come on the journey with me!

I am still blown away by the dignity snd respect their lovestory gets in this. We never see anything gratuitous, we never see their bodies- we see a life well lived, a beautiful last day, candles that have never been blown out and a peaceful open window. They won. If they don’t win an Emmy for this I don’t know what could.

As far as I know, Bill got lucky twice. First by literally catching the love of his life, and second by meeting Joel and Tess instead of any other selfish dangerous person. "Lucky me" for real. Not many have their best years after the apocalypse.

The game is a masterpiece, and yet, every change they made for the show, has somehow raised the bar. Bill was a fleeting character in the game and we didn't see Frank alive, so this fleshed out mini movie almost was absolutely mind blowing to me. Always liked offerman but JEEZ this really demonstrated his acting abilities. Wonderful wonderful wonderful. ❤️

I was in pieces after this. I felt the earth move. This was a big deal. A sweet love story that everyone can relate to. And they do. I’ve seen straight dudes all over the Internet mention how they get it now. It shattered me so deeply I even dreamt about it. It was masterful in every way. In the game these are almost throw away characters that are barely mentioned. They turned that into this. Beyond amazing.

This episode destroyed me. My husband and I were sobbing lol But this story is actually a bit different from the game. We don’t meet Frank in the game. But we get an idea of their relationship through letters and things you can pick up and read in the game. I definitely prefer this version. It’s such a beautiful portrait of humanity in a time after civilization ❤

Hey CandaceG! It was so well done. I didn't know how they did it in the game, though I have since heard that about the letters. I don't know what the plan for the show is, but I wouldn't mind episodes like this where we see some deep-dives into characters that enter the story from time to time.

@@DavidvsFilm Hey David! I loved the episode but I also feel robbed of some amazing action sequences from the game! Joel gets caught hung upside down by one of Bills traps (He lived more city central, rigged a small block) Ellie is trying to cut him down with her knife while Joel is shooting infected upside down running toward him and Bill stepping in saving them and running together to his hideout! They get the car like in the show but the battery is not fully charged so they push it down the neighbourhood to a road that goes down hill to jump start the car and infected come rushing out due to the ruckus! I would have loved a balance back and forth of the flash backs and this outcome... It's a tough one this storytelling malarkey!

The scene where Bill is watering the flowers and winks at Frank, it had me in tears. Bill used to survive, but Frank taught him how to live. They built their own little paradise in a ruined world. And then the fear in Bill’s eyes, knowing what was about to come, what he was going to lose. But they had such a bittersweet end where they left their world full of love. This departure of the game was so masterfully done. In the game Joel realised that if he wouldn’t change, he’d end up bitter and destroyed like Bill. So he had to change for Ellie’s sake. But in the series he realised that he could change to experience hope and love for Ellie. like Bill had learned from his relationship with Frank. This was absolutely breathtaking.
@DavidvsFilm
@DavidvsFilm Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for mentioning that about the flowers! Such a small little wink, but so relatable. And of course, little touches like that just make the end of the episode that much more heartbreaking, even if it is in a beautiful way. Thanks, @TheFlush. ❤️

@jamesbachmann7376 Жыл бұрын
While the wink is so cute, after Frank smiles, and then you see Frank's face drop...it goes back to Bill, and you see Bill knows that Frank's giving up on some level. He goes on to water the plants, for Frank's pleasure..."It's how we show love." Very touching.

When this show was announced I was like "oh yeah, another zombie apocalypse show filled with gore and suffering, it's the walking dead all over again", and yet after only the 1st episode I knew I was wrong; it still does have the gore and the suffering, but in a complete different way we're used to seeing them, this show made an otherwise predictable plot into something so beautiful, so artistic and deep, it's more about the humans living those difficult times rather than the doom itself.

This is SO much better than The Walking Dead. Post apocalyptic shows aren't really my favorite genre but I finally watched The Walking Dead because everyone insisted it was great. If post apocalyptic is your favorite genres, you have to see the movie “Testament”. I can’t get ANYONE to watch it with me. I do have it on DVD, the only way you can get it now. It was made for PBS, but it turned out so great and Jane Alexander’s performance was so strong, they released it in theaters. Jane was nominated for an Oscar for it. It also has William Devane. This is the film debut’s of Kevin Costner (I did a film with him. He such a sweetheart,) Rebecca Demornay and Lucas Haas. Lucas was so precious… my heart. I hope you get to see it.

The power of the showrunners to give us 2 characters for 45 min and make us love sooo harrrrd that we're a blubbering mess by the end (at least I was). And then to have the payoff be that Joel finally accepts his role as Ellie's protector. Yeah; he gets a car, and he gets some gear, and we get some exposition, but the whole thing boils down to that letter. Amazing. And I know this is a year ago, and you've probably already seen the rest of the episodes, but... yeah. You're gonna want some fancier kleenex. 😭

It's only in the comment section on gamer channels that I have seen people being sh*tty.some mad because its not game canon, some homophobia and some just saying who cares about old people. 🙄 But overwhelming people are positive. Good storytelling is good storytelling. If people can cry when Tom Hanks loses Wilson, people can certainly cry for Bill&Frank.

I was ugly crying pretty much throughout the episode. It was so beautiful and I think back to it quite often. I've played through the game many times, I've always liked Bill, so naturally Bill's town is one of my favorite parts of The Last of Us. But, I have to say that the show's version of Bill is now my favorite. I don't think I've ever seen a love story that's more touching than this one. It was so beautifully executed that it left me in pieces.

I love how Ellie is amazed by things we take for granted. I'm definitely the synical Joel type. I'd want a gun too, if I was out in this world. I hope she made it to weapons training in that military school before she ran. When the episode tone shifted to Bill, it started to feel a little TWD, and I was worried. Once it got into the meat of it, I was all for it. They start the series by showing you the "evil" in the word, then with this episode, they show you the love and goodness that's still left. I always wonder how they're using vehicles years after an apocalypse. Gas can last 3 to 6 months, though fuel stabilizers can stretch that up to 2 years. Diesel a bit longer, i think. I wonder why the military wouldn't immediately secure any utilities like gas? I assume they've restarted some production, but would Bill have much access? They definitely have a plan that would include that. Ron Swanson should know to shoot from cover and not stand in the middle of the road, lol. I feel like he would have turned the church steeple into a shooting platform or something. Can we get a spin-off series about Bill and Frank's adventures? The letter to Joel was amazing. Getting backstory on side characters from the game is a nice way to fill the middle, especially when done so well. TLOU is right up behind Andor in my book, both know how to make their characters feel real and get you to care. Both of them inspire. TLOU to live, and Andor to fight. These are two things we need these days. Look at you, just wasting TP. You gotta use your pandemic stockpile up somehow, huh? lol.
@DavidvsFilm
@DavidvsFilm Жыл бұрын
All good thoughts, especially about Ron Swanson knowing better than standing in the street. I blame Tammy 2 somehow. "hehehehe" (quoting Bill from the note). I don't know how many of these backstory/character expansions they'll do, but like you said, if it's done this well, I'm all in and I will be a wreck after each one.

Even those of us who have played the game weren’t expecting this. Bill is a character in the game but Frank isn’t. Their relationship is only hinted at through brief things Bill says and journals and some other stuff you find (I won’t say more than that). THIS was exquisite. Everything the show has added or changed so far has been a positive. Incredible stuff and I hope Nick Offerman/Murray Bartlett win awards for this episode.

Not a beautiful gay love story, simply a beautiful love story period. And their deaths were not a tragedy, as Bill said. When most of the rest of the world died or descended into chaos , they were able to create an oasis of normalcy and grow old together. Incredible acting by all involved, but especially Nick Offerman. Everything just rang true and authentic. This episode is going to stay with me for a long, long time.
