Riot grrrl saved my life as a young teen even though at the time I wasn't able to go to the shows (my mom was strict and i was stuck in the suburbs...) but just KNOWING that it was happening, reading the zines and then talking to my friends about what i learned gave me strength to challenge my fears and accept myself. So thankful!

Most people now don’t realize that these girl bands operated in parallel to the underground music scenes in a lot of cities. You could regularly go to live venues in the 1990s and still never randomly stumble into show with these girl bands unless they were on a bill with other bands. Young girls I knew in the early 2000s were surprised how little I knew about any of the RG music despite going out three (or more) nights a week. It was more on peoples radar culturally.
