Empal Daging & Es Teler 🇮🇩 | Trying Indonesian Food in Queens

Күн бұрын

I traveled to Elmhurst, Queens to try Indonesian foods for the first time. Watch me react to empal daging (Indonesian beef jerky) and I try es teler (Indonesian fruit drink with jackfruit). I try sambal terasi (Indonesian shrimp paste sambal) and tempeh (a traditional Indonesian food made from fermented soybean). This was on of the best dishes I have eaten in New York. Indonesian cuisine is very interesting and this is one of the best restaurants in New York to try Indonesian food.
Episode Intel:
Asian Taste 86
86-10 Whitney Ave, Queens, NY 11373
Reggie Ate: empal daging, sambal terasi, tempeh & try es teler

Indonesia and the Philippines both have some similar words sometimes. That's cool. Their buntut is oxtail. Here in the PH it's buntot and it means tail. Kambing is also lamb here. You're right, from the looks of it, it does look like a halo-halo and it also has a milk-base. Cool thing is they also use pandan. Wow they also use shrimp paste. Glad you enjoyed.

Buntut is tail in general. Oxtail means buntut sapi, but we never called it sop buntut sapi (always sop buntut) cause in general the only animal tail we consume is from ox. Kinda like we all call milk to refer to cow milk.

@@mikeoakeshart3823 wow. In Filipino language(Tagalog), in general too tail is buntot. The only difference is the letter "u" and "o".

5:40 well, we Indonesian usually drink after eating so that ice cube would be melted already in most cases. Not to mention, the reason why we drink it last it because Indonesian dishes usually quite spicy so we try to reduce the heat using the drink.. 😅

also they serve the drink first so when you actually need the drink later it will already run out and you need to reorder the drink again

Empal goreng is actually a chunk of beef (sirloin, chucks, shanks, whatever) beaten, marinated with many spices, cooked (boiled) for a while till all the flavours absorbed, and later fried. What I'm amazed is that it's always affordable and has always become my fave whenever I find such dish in a restaurant. It's much cheaper than a steak dish with huge of bursting flavours!!

There is a reason why you were given a spoon and fork. The beef jerky, tofu and tempe were big so we usually shred/ cut them into bite sizes with the spoon and fork, and as you did, take a little bit of everything into the spoon. The sambal was made from chili, tomato, onion, garlic with shrimp paste (belacan/terasi). The soup is sayur asam (sour sop) which is usually made of chayote, peanuts, corns, long bean and melinjo fruit and leaves.

Actually you should mix them with a spoonful of rice and then eat. So all the different flavours come together in one mouthful. The soup is like a palate cleanser or something like that. You can mix with rice or take a spoonful in between the mixed rice portion. Always mix a little bit of sambal with rice not with the beef so that it's not too hot/spicy.

Es Teler actually : avocado, jackfruit & coconut, use sweet condensed milk, syrup and ice. maybe some stuff hard to get in other country so they switch some filling. in Indonesia the ice easyly get melt so only small pieces of ice & most of them eat that just like you did. Palm seed? maybe Indonesian called it with Kolang-kaling the soup very famous in West Java & Jakarta. we call it with Sayur Asem, Sayur a.k.a soup, Asem a.k.a sour. the feeling used papaya, jackfruit (unripe fruit) some peanut (some people like put peanut some not), labu air (not sure in English), melinjo (seed & leaf), tamarind for the sour, and some herb (like Indonesian bay leaves and galangal(?)) one of favorit soup 😊

I consider cendol is a type of snack or dessert drinks. Around my place, the ice usually shaved or smashed into tiny bits, just so you can consume the whole content. But it looks like you were having the 'Drink' variant, and yes sometimes ppl do not finish the whole content even in ID. Also in ID we do not necessarily have any rules in eating, we even eat rice with hands, so feel free to just dig in, whichever suits.

no matter what rice dish you get, using spoon is the best way to scoop them than fork, fork you use them either to jab the meat so its easyer to lift and take the bite and can be useful too to push rice and everything else together to the spoon so you can have a mouth whole of everything and eat smoothly I understand western commonly uses fork on everything they eat except soup dish but asian mostly find spoon more superior to lift up big chunks of the meals each bite also for Indonesian food traditionally we even can eat them with our hands there are techniqes you can learn how to lift the rice with your hands, outside indonesia it may looked unpolite but if you eat rice dish with hands is just presenting the traditional way to eat the meal, cuttlery is just if you want to eat without getting gresy hands
