The only reason why the double-edged or Imperial Katana didn't make it all the way through the pig is because the lack of training/skill of the wielder. I still respect this man.

Samurai used to test their Swords on living humans. People that where captured after battle or even thieves within their own community. Swords where named after the amount of bodies they could cut through. There are even stories of 4-body-blades, that could cut through 4 people in a single swipe!

if the cutting technique is so bad, and they still cut so well, those are some damned good blades.

Double-edge Katana: Meaningless. And dangerous. Did you, of ColdSteel, know that we use the back of the blade for some quick close-range attacks? and after a precise cut, you don't need to attack again, the enemy(or pig) will be done with. Cut your head off, and see if you can still slash me, so that i need to cut you again,"in 360º of the compass". I liked the cut at 4:09. Battou with a wakizashi. Quite impressive.

@MikeSkullman They do not need to fold modern steels, that technique was made for older type of steel which needed to be folded to distribute the carbon content and other impurities evenly so that the blade would be strong.

The true power of the Japanese sword The spirit and the sword Activated when integrated Japanese can synchronize life and sword But because of the American nuclear bomb There are fewer samurai in all aspects of education Chinese dominate you Americans It's a flying irony

@1ohtaf1 Your statement is probably right in the sense that they will sell the stuff anyway, but every tempered steel can benefit from folding. Martensite forms filaments. The folding also involves lengthening which arranges all the internal structures. The result should be all filaments parallel to the edge. The principle is similar to the lengthening of artificial thread.

Hey csknives, do you guys do any kind of branding on the blade itself? I hate how many replicas have the "stainless steel" engraving. That itself is enough to not want to put it on a stand in a living room. Thanks for the answer.

@FallenInfidel The tangs extend nearly to the bottom of the hilt if that's what you mean (full tang is a misnomer used when the tang is nearly the full width of the blade and the grip is just a pair of slabs) and the katana is double pegged while the wakizashi is single pegged.
@antoniohamilton4833
@antoniohamilton4833 11 жыл бұрын
If you dont mind... what advantages would a double-edged katana have over a single edged one? As, in your video, there was little usage of the 'extra' edge. Especially since a katana is designed to cut with the outer edge of the curve.

@Axarno123 Moroha-zukuri is one of the oldest form of Japanese sword, dating back to about 700AD, directly adapted from the Tang Dao. The katana as we know it didn't come to be until about 1500 (late Muromachi period); before then, it was the uchigatana and tachi, but they were still single edged. So why the change in design that dropped the second edge when it is so useful? Because the tachi, the katana's forerunner, was primarily a cavalry sword; you don't really need a second edge then.

It could be just me, but it seemed like you guys had more trouble making clean cuts through things such as the pig, bamboo and thick cardboard(?) pillar with the katanas (double-edged and not) as compared to a variety of the other blades and demo videos I've seen. Was it just some less-than-perfect cuts or is there something about the sharpness of the katanas as compared to the other blades you make? Or is it maybe more about weight of the blade than sharpness?

Is it just me, or does it look like they have to put their weight into the swings to get it to cut through? Cool video though!

Try cutting 4 once inch ropes together that will hold a million ton ship steady at harbor with one stroke yourself. These are crazy tough tests. Try shoving a sword thru a car door yourself and you tell me. No one beats Cold Steel. No other company attempts these tests on their products. Cold Steel is loud and proud about theirs.

I don't think the 2 edged katana is such a good idea. The unsharpened end on a normal katana is made of softer steel, and is designed to absorb shock and reinforce the edge made of harder high carbon steel. You don't get that with the 2 edged sword, and I think it might have a higher chance of breaking. Correct me if I'm wrong.

@jman890202 katana blades are too thick for slicing through large ammounts of flesh/skin. They are strong enough that they can take on bone though. Thats why they kept being blocked by just the last little bit of the pig
@gdluciano

Because the blade is smaller and you can tranfer the power more easily. With the Katana you use the highest part of the blade,making the cut a little more difficult.

Cold Steel needs to come up with more options for customizing their Japanese swords. Like different colors for the sheath and handle wrappings, or the size, shape, and design of the tsuba, different types of menuki (sword ornaments), engravings, etc. I want to own a katana that is the personification of my very being and what I stand for. Some people might not buy these katana just cuz there's no variety and uniqueness to them. That's just a suggestion, but you should keep it in mind :)

Well the wakizashi is lighter and slightly smaller, meaning you can swing it abit faster, but trust me, the katana cuts with more force and cleaner, check out their chisa katana video for a full example of a katana's true power.

@fartx211 Like what? The only better thing would be a low-sulfur 1095 with a 1045 spine inlay. All the stainless steels are a compromise between the resistance to corrosion and sharpness.

@markster551 Hand forging is only a good thing when you are making them out of folded iron instead of steel because machines are crap at folding metal. But even the best folded iron is no match for steel. For steel it is better off machine forged since machines are more precise and the temprtures need to be much higher in order to remove the impurities in the metal.

Only one of the guys is using it like a bat, however, as for your comment, katanas (curved Japanese blades) must be swung with speed, not power. A broadsword you put power into, a katana you use speed and a particular technique with. However, these guys are for the most part using them quite well.

@Leontheon These guys really don't know much about handling swords at all but they seem to be capable of making pretty nice ones at least. As for proper hand position, it's usually where the edge of the index finger of the leading hand is the only part touching the tsuba. Then supporting hand is then placed on the far end of the handle away from the leading hand to make maneuvering the blade much easier. It's always painful for me to watch the fat dude with the mustache lob his blade around bec
