araknidude That pommel should be good enough to make a permanent impression on a light steel helmet. If the crossguard was a bit longer than you could punch with it too. Moreover, you could flip it around and use it as a hammer/mace.

LOVE Cold steel. The Cold Steel 80TFTC (11" fixed blade) literally saved my life in Afghanistan. I am not kidding when I say I LOVE these blades. Always wanted a sword by them, though now that I'm not in the military anymore my paycheck is a bit smaller. But this looks like a BEAUTIFUL sword.

I know you didn't. But my grandpa was a WW2 vet and he was so traumatized by the war that anytime I'd ask him about it he'd put on his 'mask' and tell me he didn't want to discuss it. He also had a PTSD issue where he would flip out if someone covered his ears. Sorry, I don't mean to attack your curiosity, but many vets come home with various degrees of PTSD and it's better to ease into a question like that rather than come out with it upfront.
@danielshortt6511
@danielshortt6511 10 жыл бұрын
I'm actually not that offended. The most common question I am usually asked is actually "Have you ever killed anyone?". But I DO happen to have PTSD. Although recently I have started attending a local support group for it as I got tired of no sleeping at night. So no, I don't mind talking about it, though that kind of conversation can sometimes be graphic and best now used in a thread. Especially when it comes to stories like how a Cold Steel knife did actually Dave my life. I miss that knife.

I bought this weapon about 3 days ago and today i finally got it. I have in my back yard so i decided to try it out on some lemons in which was not ripe yet, I tryed squeezing lemon in my hand and it felt like it was pretty tough. When i finally bought the sword over to cut the lemon i threw in the air and sliced it in 2 like butter! The sword is HUGE and its blade length is about 3 subway footlong sandwiches "in food measurements" I recommended getting this sword over alltheotherones awesome.!

Sword manufacturers guide.com:This blade was a beast of a cutter. no resistance on my strikes, cutting light to medium targets, but then I noticed the pommel wobbling.

I stopped to cast a puzzled gaze at my friend and it fell off. Cold steel replaced the sword but I had to pay shipping both ways.The new one does not handle like the old one (the new one has poor balance) and the pommel looks slightly off line with the handle. It also makes a 'clink' noise when you tap the pommel with your hand.

XVIK Strong doesn't mean anything in regards to metals, materials (metals in this case) can have compressive, impact, fatigue, tensile and yeild strength which are all the materials ability to resist force, strong implies the metal can itself exert force which of course makes no sense at all. And just to blow your mind ductile cast iron has higher yield and tensile strength than titanium. Just saying, ;-)

1:50 shows what this blade is about. In the time of heavy armour piercing swords this relatively light sword would give double the attack rate, either sword and shield/knife/mace, or, using 2 handed being able to move it twice as fast. This is why the Roman Short Swords were so effective against the Briton Long Swords. The long swords could reach over the tops of shields and chop through armour, but were no help when the warrior had already been stabbed through the guts during their upswing!

Okay so review time. I have this sword and i do HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) so I am not just a schmuck with a sword. I have been training with this sword everyday since in forms and swings and flex test. I took the sword to my dojo and to my father who is a mechanical engineer (knows his metals very) all were impressed by the strength and balance of the sword. I have handle many swords, reproductions and ancient blades, and this is what I have to say about the cold steel hand and a half (long sword). It is the best sword I have ever used before I am so so very happy with buying this sword. Cold Steel I have purchased many of your polypropylene training swords. For your prices and the quality of your blades and other swords real and training. You guys are impressive. If I may make one small adjustment with your hand and a half. If it had a fuller even if it was half way down the blade it would make this sword even better than it already is. Your loyal customer. P.S. I will be buying your great sword in due time. You have sold me.

@Grimganker Chainmail was designed at times when there were either stubby Gladii designed for stabbing (though not fit to pierce armour) and Spathas (as well as Oakeshott type X swords) designed for cutting. Longswords were designed to deal with armor by stabbing. If you want to cut through, get some wire shears or a blowtorch.

I've got one of these. Pretty good sword, very sturdy and hefty. Only thing that's bad about it, is that it's one pound heavier than the originals ( maybe try adding fluting to the blade ) and that fact that the pommel is not peened, which gives it some minor durability problems that most threaded swords have, what with the pommel unscrewing after some use. I give it a 7.5/10. Sturdy enough, and reliable for a good time, although it'll require extra maintenance due to the threaded pommel.

Iv got swords and I love cold steel products... But I live in scotland unfortunately. I say this after his "this could save your life in a fight" comment. Truth is in the uk. If an intruder came into my home, and I was to defend my family with one of my swords or knives. If I successfully protected my family and survived, I'd still lose my life. This is because my country would call me a murderer and locked up in prison for years. Destroying my life and my future, because I killed a real criminal who could have been a rapist, murderer, thief and I was unwilling to allow them to hurt or effect my family or myself. If you enter someone's home without their permission for any reason, where their children sleep and they are Ment to be safe, you should expect to die. If that was excepted by my country I would agree with the statement. But In reality it won't save your life in a fight. In the uk you will lose your life even if you survive.

@JohnsonWilJ you bring up stability. the thing you sacrifice with an end heavy blade is YOUR stability. say you miss your swing? with an end heavy blade, if you miss, your "recovery time" is alot longer, and you leave yourself VERY open. also, it means you must have space to swing wide and build momentum, meaning your screwed in an enclosed space. again, i cant stress enough that it depends on your fighting style and the combat situation.

The pommel attachment sucks. The cheap threaded screw end of the tang broke from a swing on a 3.5 inch weedy tree, resulting in the pommel flying off. After welding it back together, it is now SOLID. Also the tip of my sword completely bent an inch down from the top from dropping in on the grass where it must have hit a rock. But I just filed off the bent tip and made a new, rounder tip which is now strong. I'm sure the pommel and tip will break with heavy use for everyone. 3/5 after modication

@Ki113r210 12 жыл бұрын
@JohnsonWilJ it depnds on your fighting style, and the blade in question. for hacking and slashing, single edged weapons, your right, you do want more weight in the blade, it gives it more momentum. however, for thrusting and stabbing, you need point control, which comes from more of the weight being behind or in your hand. a balanced sword is more versitile than an end heavy sword, because it doesnt restrict your fighting style, you can slash, thrust and bash, what the hand and a half is for.

@ThePowerBanana45 you don't want a sword that size much over 3lbs, at least not in the days when such a sword was used in combat, it would be too tiring to wield, causing one to slow and maybe get killed. The trick was to get a light, strong, sharp sword and that was hard to do...... They DID use swords of this design for official ceremonies, they were called "bearing swords" and weighed about 15 pounds, but were NOT meant for combat.

@bmecher i wouldnt say so. after all, the ottomans and saracens had both in a fair bit of abundence, it was the fact that european knights faced lance charges during all those fuedal conflicts which would punch RIGHT though mail arrows against a man with mail and a padded underjacket, that was wellsufficient to stop an arrow, from a bow anyways. the crossbow, the heavy lance, and labour shortages as a result of the black death as well as better technoloy is what ushered in plate harnesses.

@csknives I'm aware swords are designed to flex but not break, thats done in the (hopefully repeated) annealing then tempering processes of the blade's manufacture: If you read my comment correctly instead of jumping immediately on the defensive you'll see that I said the blade STAYS bent after chin-up meaning it's still too Ductile to regain its initial shape. That is not the mark of a "Truely Great Sword" as your ad states. Some of your kit looks nice but this does not impress.

chanimail was to protect against cutting and slashing from bladed weapons such as swords knives the interlocking rings disperse the impact af the blades cutting edge and prevent it from biting/cutting into your flesh a strong trust with a blade with a strong and sharp tip could pierce it as shown long bodkins on arrows could pierce mail and the blunt force of maces and flails could damage and break bone

@Tork789 well, some of their stuff is as authentic as they can make it, but this, isn't made of the same stuff, specifically to be lighter, and some of their clubs are made of a high grade plastic rather than original materials, and this weapon shouldn't have a weighted pommel, because you don't want a balanced blade, you want all the weight coming down with the blow, not behind your hand, slowing the blow down.

@thedamned93 Some of us are very taken with medieval stuff for some reason. I dunno why but In my mind swords are some of the most awesome things I can think of.

Are these swords the most modern design of when swords were in their prime? The design of these swords seem to be the most refined. I notice that practically all later swords ended up with much thinner blades except they became curved. My only guess for the shape is a balance between crushing, slicing, and stabbing. Seems ultimately utilitarian. Unless I'm mistaken, watching the blade flex through cuts seems to hint at that actually aiding it.

>implying people buy swords like this for defense These are very high quality collectors pieces. While they are most definitely battle ready due to Cold Steel being the amazing creators they are, most people buy these as collectibles. And honestly, when it comes to home defense, I'd much rather have a sword or a spear.

@afogn a REALLY strong hrust, because ive seen riveted mail stand up to axe blows and sword thrusts. ill bet you that CS use butted mail on this vid. which is why people recon that mail was seess against things, itwasnt, riveted mail was very effective, just very time consuming and didnt prtect against blunt impact.

I enjoy the demonstration, but for one thing. The maille that you're using is not representative of proper maille, for what you are using appears to be non-hardened, and butted together instead of riveted.

@asdfg2560 No difference. A hand-and-a-half sword is called a bastard sword because, when they were first used, the major swords were either one handed or two handed. Since it had the capability to be either based on preference/situation, it didn't fit into either category and, so, became a "bastard".
