Wow!!!! Two new friends that watch my vids came into my life and let me drive and look at there brand new EMPI dual Carburetor set ups. What a great opportunity to make a hands on comparison and drive there cars.
In both cases I would have recommended smaller carbs with smaller venturi's to maximize smoothness and economy without giving up a noticeable difference in performance on a daily driver. Thumbs up on both products.
Dual 40mm super D two throat Carbs with 34 mm ventures would work well out of the box using
180 main / air
140 main / gas
60 idle
35 accelerator pump
On car mixture screws and acc pump will vary with engine size, cam, compression, altitude, fuel octane and blah blah blah

I find a lot of VW guys shoot from the hip when one mentions EMPI. I'm on a budget and have used a lot of their products over the years without issue. I expect to have to do a little finessing to get aftermarket parts to fit and work, it's all part of the fun of maintaining and modifying old cars. I know EMPI went through a tough time with quality complaints, but I think they do listen to customer feedback and make efforts to supply a good product at a realistic price. Thanks for the vid EZ!

Thanks for another great video! Your friend with the baja should move his fuel pump under the tank, they are pushers not pullers. The pump will work like that for a while but will fail a lot faster that way

Nice video I have had the hpmx IDF and several weber sets and the hpmx carbs are fine and a good option for the price. I run spanish idf 44's only because I wanted a little more street credibility. I always wanted a set of dellorto but have never actually put hands on a set. I hope to try set some day.

Seems in all types of engines it is common for people to want to run to big of a carburetor . To big and one looses air speed and harder to draw the correct amount of fuel.

Car Craft has the best prices. I dont get anything from them either. Their markup is really low so they dont make much on each transaction. they just do a huge volume. I know the owners and if you think your getting something cheaper than them they will get you somewhere else. I know the wholesale prices too. make very little and trying to help the VW Community. I have been going there since the late 70s. when they first opened. (had a different name and location)

Thanks for the great video. I got my first set of Empi HPMX carbs, a few months ago. I only found one problem with them. While setting the floats, I found that the seats, for the float needle, had been over tightened, and the aluminum washer under the seats, had been squeezed out. I replaced the washers, and they are running great.

I still dont know why anyone builds a 69mm stroke anymore. 74 counterweighted is the same price and drops right in stock case. Just need to rotate and check and notch out the cylinder openings just a little. I would never build a 1914 I would go 1968 thick wall cost about the same money and you dont have those super thin case saver areas.

Needle bearings! That is nice. I’m jealous. I kinda got the idea the Empi’s quality has been on the upswing lately, especially with carburetors. I somehow have managed to collect two sets of dellortos, a set of 40’s and a set of 45s. Maybe I should get an empi linkage and chuck the CB linkage.

@TheEZGZ…I live out in CO as well and I was wanting to know what your experience with running dual carbs in the winter has been like. We do not have a ton of humidity in the winter but it does get cold…From what I have been told it seems damned near impossible to freeze up the carbs on a dual setup as the cylinder transfers heat to the system fairly well.

When tuned correctly dual carbs run year around in any conditions. I run jets that originaly came when I bought them brand new. Webers run a 55 or 60 idle and Delorto;s use 60. The main depends on what venturi is in the throat. Usually 4 X the venturi size and round up

Hey EZ! Off topic but I need help. Watching your rocker geometry vids. I’m doing a fresh head install with new pushrods I’m going to cut to size. I believe I should use no shims and make the right length push rid. BUT Is it wise to use a .30 shim in case I’m off a few mm on the pushrod cut? I’m m case I need more adjustment? Btw you pushrod tool is genius! My empi tool is… Umm. Annoying. 😂
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 10 ай бұрын
Push rod geometry is critical. That’s the i idea of having a adjustable Pushrod. It’s best to not cut pushrod’s and use shims at the same time.

as far as the Super D carbs go, what would you recommend for a 2276, the 40mm, or 45mm? I am running a single Weber 44 now, and it just keeps having more and more issues. I had almost talked myself into a set of HPMX's, but I would much, much rather have the Dellorto style carbs on my car. Thanks for all you do, and for making such informed and concise videos for the rest of us VW enthusiasts out here.
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 11 ай бұрын
As far as best drivability and economy I would always choose the smaller size. 40mm with the 34 mm ventures would work really well. The super D air cleaner bases and tops are way better than the HPMX tin chrome style. Leave the 45mm carbs for the drag racing weekend warriors

i agree with EZ. learned the hard way that bigger is rarely better with carbs unless you are building a high revving drag car. DKP guys with big motors run those big 48 IDA carbs for looks and tradition rather than practicality.

@@gbaker929 I've had a few beetles over the years but have never owned/built anything above 1600. I'll bet your motor makes some useful power! My current engine is a mildly worked 1598 sp with a single SU carb just for something different.

Both of these guys have new engines and are taking it easy. So I don't know. Your big valve heads should have come with heavy duty single springs at least..... I would think it would spin higher with a load. 8.5 compression is good for your combo. Full advance should be 34 degrees BTDC A good tail wind always helps :-)

He let me take a short drive. It ran nice. The throttle cable is on the left side of the crossbar in a none stock position. I asked him why he did that. He said his old engine was like that so he used the same fan shroud and the old hole even though the stock hole is there???
