Has anyone read "My Family's Slave," just published in The Atlantic? Written by a Filipino immigrant who was raised from childhood by a slave. As a child he didn't question or know what a slave was, but as he grew up he started to figure it out, and wrote the story as a tribute to her after her death. Talk about heart-wrenching, the story of millions in the world.

We need to look at the real economic structure that allows few people to accumulate assets unfairly since it is the poor and the middle class who actually do the work to produce goods and services. Why are they not compensated enough to cover their living expenses, medical care, and good education? We need to look at the tax codes that allow rich people to keep too much money from the works that are done by the poor and middle class. We need to look at how corruptions have ruined the morale and economy. Public utilities, hospitals and clinics, good schools and universities require funding. The money has to come from the people who hold assets and have been taken more than their fair share from economic activities.

It's sad they have to work......but the main evil behind it ....it is the Philippines government .....my wife has involved n volunteer work and talked to many maids, they said it is the corruption of their government .....so Philippines becomes such a poor country with no work for men or women. They also said some men are too lazy to work too. My wife has suggested many ideas to help their country....but they all said the top official are too corrupt and even if they want to set up a business ...but everything they buy is five times more than other countries. The president of Philippines can't even stop the corruption. If the country can provide jobs for men and women, then no ones need to leave their kids behind.. Pray for Philippines !

Although I often don't see eye-to-eye with Abby but this piece really hits home. from living in California I know that many Filipinos only hope for a better life is to become a nurse in the Philippines and come to the United States. others are not so lucky and do not have a skill such as nursing. You see many of these end up being women who are essentially trafficked into the Middle East.

I have been employing Indonesian maids for 17 years. I try and treat them as family members as much as I can. I do know that quite a large number of them are treated unjustly. Some a little.....and some....more. And a small number are just plain oppressed. However ...I do try to help as much as I can. I believe that all human beings are equal and should be treated with dignity and kindness. Except maybe the really evil ones. The funny thing is .....the really evil ones today are not poor people with no education but powerful and educated people in high positions. Many of them are wealthy and live their lives well but fail to appreciate the value of life and importance of moral and virtue. alas.....if only they use their wealth and power to help instead of oppressing others.

For home caregivers, I heard most of them are paid below minimum wage. I heard former president Obama tried to fix the loophole that allowed home caregivers to be paid below minimum wage. Many migrant workers face worse labor conditions in the home country. Because of outsourcing of jobs from america, college graduates in the philippines are now doing much better in the home country. Worldwide, about 1 in 10 now die from air pollution and just being outside of the Philippines can improve the health of filipinos. There is not much population control in the philippines bec of opposition from the Catholic Church so there is always a great supply of labor from the philippines. Philippines is also one of the few countries where abortion is still illegal and there is also no divorce. Philippines is quite religious and it is actually one of the happiest countries on earth in spite of poverty. I was in the philippines in 2016 and it is like ground zero for both overpopulation and global warming, and desperate people turned to the usual demagogues to save them. I did have some good memories of Manila Philippines like the Vikings buffet has a birthday promotion where a birthday celebrant eats for free with at least 1 person paying. I ate lots of dragonfruit at the Vikings buffet. I brought lots of organic food to the Philippines for my 2016 vacation such as organic whole grain pasta and I prepared most of my food myself instead of eating out. The economy in Manila does not seem to be too bad and it does have a Costco equivalent (S&R is partly owned by costco and sells similar products including costco junk food like churros) that sells some organic food like organic quinoa. Big supermarkets do sell organic whole grain pasta, organic brown rice, organic black rice, organic red rice, organic beans, etc. Filipino diets are very unhealthy (full of fried foods like fried chicken, processed meats like ham, sausage that cause cancer and most do not eat vegetables), many smoke, plus the air pollution means many die early from heart disease like strokes. Eating large amounts of unhealthy animal products like corned beef, spam, vienna sausages, hotdog are all very popular in the philippines. High salt diet also causes high blood pressure, strokes and stomach cancer. Personally, I just take vitamin b12 supplement which allows me to eat very little animal products and I am vegan for most days.

A bunch of Aussie construction workers started frequenting the place, young guys with plenty of cash, and the bold, brash outlook that used to characterize Australians. The guys organized the girls, and hired a high powered lawyer to represent them. The girls got their overdue pay, better conditions, and their documents, or got released to take better jobs.

I came back to this after a while and saw a shitty response from me so let me explain myself, I did hear that but you gotta understand, those ¨manufacturing jobs¨ most likely were the exact same thing, you think they were getting good money for their services just because they're men? when you say ¨this issue¨ i assume you're talking about domestic workers right? because most slaves are and were throughout history men, aside from sex slaves, I'll give you an example, recently as 6 months ago (january first) me and my grandparents went for a vacation to a somewhat oddly located ¨Resort¨ for 10 days, this was my first vacation in 6 years and pretty much the first with them as an adult, long story short the place was a nightmare they tried to kill my grandparents (they started with my grandad which i managed to save) and were in talks about ¨putting this guy on the tables¨ as in being a waiter (this guy being me and for the record i'm a man), among many other things, the place was taken, i could notice some waiters who were most likely kidnapped and the people who managed the place were very nasty looking people, they would take on white people, and i live in Argentina, not the Philippines.

I am a Filipino. As much as I want to feel pity for this filipino's, I can not stop myself to also blame them for putting themselves to this kind of situation. Because unlike the Africans who were kidnapped and forcefully taken out of their land, most of this filipinos are those who SEEK to be recruited in working to abroad. I will feel pity for those Filipinos who were abducted from our country but those who use recruiter's help and even pay for their service just so they can work abroad, its their fault. Its because its normal in the Philippines for those who are less educated to not research about their employer and work before they agree in coming to a foreign land. If a degree holder is exploited with lesser salary, what more the illeterate Filipinos? Also, they must understand that the job was only offered to them 'a foreigner' because no american citizen will agree to less salary and no benefits. Filipino's at first see this hardship as an opportunity to get citizenship without thinking that this may or may not happen. Also, due to this kind of Filipinos, the Philippine passport has the less integrity in other immigration country. They say they stayed in foreign land even after their contract ended just so they can work and provide to their family? See! That's their choice which opens up to more exploitation. If they are not documented, the citizen will take advantage of them. I know someone who is a TNT abroad and said that she was offered to hide in a house in exchange that she will work there below minimum wage and cant go out,. Yet she agreed for the sake of sending money to Philippines and because she was thinking "sayang naman pinuhunan ko para lang makapunta dito." This document is a trash in a way that the interviewer didnt throw questions. As someone who start to work as a sales associate in Mall in the Philippines, you should look at your salary and capacity to bring up a family before you create a children. If in the end you'll used this children as your reason to be exploited by others, why marry and get pregnant? Why? I really dont understand. Why?

If I had the money I would love a Filipino maid. I would first thank them for their service. In return, the first thing I would buy them is a top-of-the-range laptop so they could zoom with their family every day. They would work 8 hours a day with weekends off. If they wanted to go into the City I would pay for their taxi and give them extra money for food while out. I would treat them like my own family and make sure their children were put in school which I would pay for. Love costs nothing respect costs nothing caring costs nothing We live in an evil world run by evil people. I have a few Filipino friends in Tarlac, and they are great people. I feel for people trapped like these women are. All they want to do is earn a living to help and feed their families.

The less we can say is that Filipino people never learn from their mistakes. In the Filipino culture, adults who can never act as mature adults are ''pimping'' their kids and force them to work for them. They often send them abroad and tax them of about 80% of their salaries. For the parents in the Philippines this is some easy money they are receiving so they're not shy wasting it in booze and rooster fights and making parties etc. THAT is the real problem: The Filipino mentality and culture. Not the US nor the employers but the Filipino mentality. They should focus on improving their own country instead. Filipinos are always accusing others for their own mistakes. Nothing is never their fault.
