I found the beatiful Morena ( that is a slang for a girl but in this case its because of the genaral morena that died in the war, and the person couldn't find water because the stream was filed with blood from the fight) That in the stream I left ( because he was dead) enjoy my people that a night is nothing and if you dont sleep now, you will sleep at dawn. Not so fun fact: when Pedro II was being hailed as the future emperor, he was sleeping. They woke the boy up, put him in a carriage (he was still in his pajamas!), took him through a crowd that was partying, screaming and setting off fireworks. After that, he was so traumatized that he was afraid of any kind of explosions and hated to throw parties (and remember: his father had just left him in Brazil, so he was still processing what had happened).

The early republic that came after the monarchy was called "the coffee and milk republic" because the two major parties answered to the interests of coffee barons in Sao Paulo (the coffee) and the cattle barons in Minas (the milk) and they took turns governing the country in incredibly fraudulent elections that had no competitors (until Getulio Vargas, but that's another story).

Is interesting how Brazil was able to put down so many revolts at the same time. I guess that happened by three reasons: 1-A relatively short war of independence, meaning more resources and manpower to deal against internal disorders. 2-Few cohesion between the rebels. The War of Tatters (also know as "Farrapos"), for example, was a conflict between the rebels themselves at some point. The central authority was able in exploring those internal divisions. 3-The new provincial autonomy was responsible for several conflicts, but also made easier to negociate with the insurgents. The imperial government was usually flexible when was necessary, and several rebellions ended because they partially got what they wanted. The ten-year War of Tatters ended with the central government agreeing with the adoption of protectionism towards the local meat production, one of the main causes of the fight.

Another side to this is the fact that putting down this great number of rebellions meant not actually crushing the will for future uprisings. On the states of Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Sul the revolts kept happening, some of them even after the fall of the monarchy, and even the symbols of these rebels, like the red ribbons of the gauchos, became intrínsec part of the local cultures Also, I thought the official translation for the farroupilha was "ragamuffin" (palavra que soa um tanto ridícula pra mim, mas deve ser o meu bairrismo riograndense kkk)

Indeed. The farrapos revolution was the most promising one. They resisted 10 years! But they had too many disagreements... Some officers wanted free slaves, others were slave owners. In my honest biased Brazillian opinion, Pedro II was one of the best emperors ever, if not the best. He managed to stay in power for so long without pissing lots of powerful people, he truly embraced politics at the time. Not saying he was good for the people, but purely as a politician, he was amazing.
@Borderose
@Borderose 2 жыл бұрын
Nah, nah. You guys have good reason to take pride in him and your imperial legacy. Pedro II was, indeed, awesome. You'd think elevating a teenager would always spell trouble, but, nope. The kid manned up like no one else and threw himself and everything he had into the furnace to forge, however briefly, a shining empire in the New World. Can anyone honestly blame him to not want to push again when he got old? By that point he was tired, drained, and just wanted to come home.

As a brazilian, I'm happy you are going this series,but I think the video downplayed a bit how Brazil became stable again. It wasnt just the elites deciding to have turns in government, it was Pedro II manipulating both parties to have them at the same time colaborate and be at each others throath while he forced the party change so no one of them would become the most powerfull. By doing this he basicaly made it so the parties werr focused on gaining power while real power was in his hands so he could reign more or less as he wanted to. It wasnt luck that made it work, it was, surprisiling, that this 15 year old emperor was a political mastermind

6:30 - Ok THIS was oversimplified. I think this will get burried in the storm of comments. But, for the few who read this, as far as I remember it went like this: Seeing the current situation from the perspectives of the comarcas, the regents, the conservatives and the liberal formed a last plan, not to save brazil (at least for the consevatives it was not "only" to save the rest of Brazil from that turmoil), but to even create smaller countries of their own and even republics, they chose make pedro king. Because usually young kings were easily controlable and incompetents they believed they had 3 escape cards that were: 1-Pedro fails completely and they can just blame the king and take their own parts in a quick civil war 2-Pedro fails but the monarchy in portugal reclaims part of its former colony 3-Pedro for some miracle succedes but they can swey his as they please for the republican (revolution) and conservative (coup) threats and he becomes a puppet king. What happens next is the most unbelievable diplomatic and political master plan I've seen in my life as a geography nerd (yes, even comparable to Bismark). Pedro and Bonifácio seeks for the FARROUPILHA revolution (at the time a country who had succesfully seceded from Brazil), promissed conssessions and political power to their elites if they helped Brazil with their inner conflicts. The results from this? The revolts were ceased, the Farroupilha was annexed and both parties were supressed by the militaries from the former farroupiha. The rebels lost The farroupilha lost All thw political parties lost But Pedro won And he was a GODDAM TEENAGER Bismark didn't even lost his virginity and was far from even thinking about politics by the same age Pedro II took the 3 major menaces to the biggest south american country at the same time AND WON. ------------- But yeah, I guess "it worked" sums it up. _____ PS: please fact check the hell out of my coment. I remember being taught this twice in my school life and reading about it once, but I it's still possible I am exagerating

Hi there, I'm a Brazilian and love history, while most of this chapter was accurate, the incentive to bring immigrants was not due to "whitening" the population, more so because of the restrictions on slave trade, farmers needed cheap labor which they promised to mostly southern italians, but when they got here they were almost treated as slaves. Almost tho. The Japanese immigration was quite big as well
@henriquesoares2343
@henriquesoares2343 Жыл бұрын
The first wave of immigration had absolutely the goal of whitening the population, although that wasnt publicly stated at the time, hence why pretty much all of the migrats from the time being European. The Japanese immigration wouldnt happen until the start of the 20th century, some 30 years later, when word got known in Europe of the way the first wave of immigrants had been treated, since their goal at the time was to strictly replace slaves.

@Steven Universe I'm aware but that was not the point that I was argueing. I was saying that the people of Brazil being united in the goal of putting a new king on the throne despite wildly different backgrounds was similair to how leading up to the bannin of Alcohol in the United States, people who would have otherwise been enemies were united in their desire to ban alcohol.

Have you guys considered making a series about local literature? Where you'd talk about the main works of literature abroad from places that aren't generally talked about? Brazil for instance has very interesting literary periods. The Guarani, for instance, is one of the most famous works of Brazilian epic and is a romanticized native story adapted into European values. Then there is the Parnassianism school of poetry, which in France got little tract due to its rigidity, in Brazil became a major movement with our culture obsession with proving itself a serious civilized country and the rigidity of making "perfect poems" seemed to resonate with that feeling. Not to mention the unique Brazilian realist movement spearheaded by Machado de Assis and his unreliable narrators.

The other person deleted the comment, so I'll reply you here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraguayan_War_casualties Read this article, all sources are listed below. And I was not talking about all casualties, I was talking about battle casualties, that is, the ones that can be attributed to the belligerent states. If you add up all the Paraguayan deaths in ALL the battles of the war it doesn't even amount up to 50k. The Confederate States of America alone had 290,000 dead in the American Civil war, much more casualties than ALL of the Paraguayan War (including all countries) but I bet you're not willing to say they the Confederates were "genocided".
