Story not so good, technically well done? Yeah, it's a Best Picture nominee.

CODA's story was cookie-cutter and manipulative as hell - empire of light is so getting a best picture nom LOL
@yourgoblinsecretary3842 Жыл бұрын
I agree that CODA might not have been the “best” movies of last year, but I think a lot of people gravitated towards it bc it took a tried narrative trope and did something with it that nobody else has done before. Like taking the family dramady, but having it be a hearing girl in a deaf family and the unique complexities that come with that. Like how the Shape of Water played with the classic love story narrative, or how Slumdog Millionaire played with the “rags to riches” trope.

This movie is 1000% getting in. Simply because I think there's so many movies that have been a bust that it's getting way easier to get in. Everything Everywhere and Top Gun were basically "yeah there's like a 50% chance" about 2-3 months ago and now they are basically locks.

Saw this movie recently. Not much of a story and definitely a character study and social events around them. Agree with everything you said about the acting and cinematography!

Thinking 1917 doesnt have a gripping story (or is worse than Skyfall) is a big oof to be honest

American beauty for me is one of the most compelling films I’ve ever seen
@marcochen9117 Жыл бұрын
it is fairly standard, with very little "conflict" and anything special with its characters. 1917 was carried by its one shot take gimmick

I wouldn't call Roger Deakins the goat of cinematography, even though he is definitely at the top. But there's still Emmanuel Lubezki, and for me (as a photographer) there is still a big gap between the two of them. Also it looks to me that the reviews of this movie might hurt Roger Deakins chance to get the cinematography Oscar this year. I think it's going to be between him and Linus Sandgren for Babylon, and for what I saw from the Babylon trailer, his cinematography his also much better than Roger Deakin's this year, so I'm guessing Linus is getting his second Oscar for Babylon

With Darius khondji playing for the Bardo, I disagree, there's the fact that they finally reward Darius who only has one nomination so this would be the perfect time for Darius, Linus will have future chances, Lubezki and Deakins are on the same level both with different styles, but I still think Deakins is better over Lubezki, Amsterdam (photographed by Lubezki) looks pretty boring visually.
@AndreFernandesMovies Жыл бұрын
@@gab2561 yeah I saw review and people are saying its probably the worst work in Lubezki's career. however what makes you believe Darius can get in? Bardo is doing really poorly. It has a rotten score of 52% on rotten tomatoes and 51 on metacritic with a 7.1 IMDb score which is really low for a movie of such a great director. I think all this considered might hurt the chances of Bardo in the Oscars, so I dont even know if it will get a nomination for cinematography

That’s because you have to be more mature for this movie. The story was fine. It’s a sad state of affairs when people have to be led by the hand for things to make sense to them.
