I served 22 years in the Senior Service, the Royal Navy, its steeped in tradition, from ships names that go back centuries, phrases, routines that Nelson would recognise. Very quickly, after you join up, you become aware of its history, the ethos of teamwork, loyalty. We all eventually leave the Royal Naval, but Royal Navy never leaves you.

The Royal Navy, the "senior" service is very evident all over the country. Kids today probably hardly notice or care about it, but anybody with an interest in our history and how we got to where we are are very well aware of the importance of the Navy. It is kind of everywhere, but very much in the woodwork and detail that many never really notice anymore. Victory, Belfast and the Golden Hind are very visible and pretty well known icons.

This TV series by Dan Snow is over a decade old now. I watched it first time around. It often pulls down England and later Britain. I was sorry the series ended with the 1st world war and leaves out the second altogether. At age 80 I can well remember Britain in its glory days. Your country has taken over from us now and will continue to do so. But every time you speak you the land so many Americans came from. Most of the founding Fathers were either born in Britain or were born in America under English rule.

The Royal Navy is no longer a major part of daily British culture. It used to be, with the entire country working for the Royal Navy and the expansion of the Empire's benefit, as you will have learned from the later parts of this series. Today it's merely viewed as part of our national defence. You found it weird and humorous that Spain was referred to as a Superpower, but in the 1400s and 1500s, it was. During that period, England, by comparison, was very much a poor and insignificant country. It wasn't until the 1500s that it took its first steps towards global wealth and dominance.

What totally screwed up Spain, was being overwhelmed with too much, waay too much Gold and Silver. It threw Spain into a 400 year long depression and Spain was finally exiting it, when it screwed the pooch by joining the European Union, which is going to end up dragging Spain back into Delression again. It’s bloody sad frankly. Bob.☹️

The galleon is a nice touch. This series is quite revealing, and the main reason back then that Europe was so much more successful in all things maritime was its geography, specifically natural bays/ports all around its coastlines and of course this is just as apparent with the British Isles too. Africa is the largest example of how lack of places to dock ships limits growth/trade etc immensely. Great to see you back Sarah 😊

Pepys shorthand writing was the forerunner to the modern version that I was taught at school almost 60 years ago, no need for it today but was the principle tool for a news reporter then. I was the only boy in that class of 15 girls! Also took typing but my career as a reporter only lasted 5 years, left as became disappointed with the direction the press was headed. The gutter.

Parliament and a Council of State led the British Republic (or Commonwealth) from 1649, then Oliver Cromwell became the head (Lord Protector) in 1653 until his death in 1658, then his son Richard was Lord Protector until the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 The British Civil Wars are key to understanding the American Revolution, but sadly that seems to be taught as if it happened in a vacuum and sprung up out of thin air with no precedent.

Not so much any more but at its height over 10% of the nation either served in the Navy or associated industries. Chatham dockyard saw what would be classed as the first ever assembly line in the form of rope and cordage production. It has its own distinct language which is contained within normal conversations which many people are unaware of its naval origins known as Jackspeak. In our history, our rise and decline often goes hand in hand with the success, or lack of, of the Navy. We say our nation is sea blind now, people don't understand the complexities of sea trade and how dependent we still are in this digital age, like events in the red sea, evergreen, piracy etc.

Samuel Pepys was a great man. His extensively thorough and detailed 9-year private diary between 1660 and 1669 is Britain's most celebrated diary and a major historical source of what daily life and events were like in the second half of the 1600s, aside from the detailing of his many extravagant s3x$al escapades. Pepys's diary also includes one of the most detailed and best first-hand eyewitness accounts of the Great Fire of London in 1666. He was sadly unable to continue his diary beyond 1669 due to his failing eyesight, making it impossible for him to continue writing.

Hello SoGal and Roger. A very eventful period. As well as my father having served in the RN right round the world, at a time when much of it flew a British flag, I grew up reading the very popular Ladybird history books about many of the characters mentioned here from as soon as I could read, before school age. I am not sure that this is taught these days. I suggest you watch more videos, rather than giving spoilers in comments. Note the reference to new worlds. I recently saw an interview with Patrick Stewart on a video by Conan O'Brian on KZbin. Patrick grew up a few miles from me. I have relatives living in his town now. The values he talked about were very like the ones discussed. His willingness to see himself as more than his upbringing and go out and do something were also like those mentioned here. This is the best way I can think to answer the question of how the RN is tied to being British. It reflected a nation and projected it across the world. No need for Star Fleet, but you can see how much of the latter is from the RN.

The Royal Navy was far superior to the USN in the Pacific at defeating the Kamikaze. As late as 1943, after much pleading from the USA, the Royal Navy dispatched the carrier HMS Victorious to hold Japan back when the USA was down to a single carrier. They pretended it was American. They renamed and repainted it as USN ROBIN. No American would have been taught this most noble of actions by the Royal Navy in WWII.

The Spaniards concentrated on Central & South America, where they got their silver & gold from the Aztec & Inca empires which they conquered. The Caribbean was favoured also for the production of coffee, cotton, & initially, sugar cane. It was to work in these tropical areas that they resorted to taking African slaves, as Europeans frequently died from the diseases endemic in the area, while Africans, from similar climes, were able to survive better. many slaves also suffered from the American ailments, as well as European ones such as colds & flue, but they could be readily replaced by the import of more African slaves. The English & French had settled in North America, resisting Spanish expansion there. The ship illustration with a fish was to show how the fish shape was used in the design of the ship, in the shape of its hull, which made it streamlined & therefore faster than the more blocklike Spanish ships. Did you miss the bit about Cromwell the Dictator, who ruled the country during the so called Republic, after Parliament won the Civil War. Pepys wrote in shorthand, so his wife could not read about his many affairs etc. He also witnessed & recorded the Plague & Great Fire of London.

In a way of an apology for mis reading yesterday's video something light out of today's video. The Spanish Armada not only lead to the establishment of the Royal Navy but it gave us the West Highland Terrier breed of dog. I have had the joy of looking after two of this wonderful breed Jimmy and Dougal. The story is that this spirited breed of terrier originated from the wrecked ships of the Spanish fleet that was navigating its escape via a round trip circumnavigating the UK via Scotland only to be wrecked on the Scottish mainland by a storm that did more damage to the Spanish than our guns. This spirited little dog that was kept on the ships to keep the rats under control not only survived the battle then survived the storm then found their way to shore. The Scots new a good thing when they saw one and adopted this wonderful breed and called it its own , The West Highland Terrier.

The Royal Navy, has always been the power behind the throne of England/Britain since the first Elizabeth age. Because we are an island the sea has been our first line of defence and attack. The last time our island was invaded successfully was 1066 by Duke William on Anjoue, better known as William the Conqueror. After WW II life changed to be ruled from the air, but generally we have held our own so far.

Whilst containing partial Truths, what is constantly missed about the British Empire, which differed totally from other Empires, was the real driving force for it, and the glue that held it together, was the English Common Law Constitution. Which did not Establish and uphold just a vulnerable Democracy. The Contract with the Crown and the People- drawn up by the Philosopher John Locke - was for the Establishment of the long favoured ideal of a Balanced Republic which every prior philosopher had failed to work out how to prevent the catastrophic Power Grab - so the genius John Locke came up with the fix of a - Power Denying Balanced Republic Under The Rule Of Law- because asLocke said - “It is Far Better To Be Ruled By Laws Rather Than People”. So every Colony was pretty much run itself by its own people, The Justice System was the Common LawConstitution, with everyone equal under the law, and there was an appeals process that started with the Governor and ended with the highest Court, which was Parliament itself . This is why one of the greatest admirers of the Common Law Constitution was the properly trained in Constitution and Law Mahatma Gandhi. Unfortunately, the American Colonists found they had inherited the impossible situation of being caught between a rock and a hard place, when Vehemently Anti Slavery King George and Queen Charlotte pointed out that Constitutionally Slavery had been illegal in Britain since the Middle Ages, and the Law Also applied to the Colonies, as did all of the Universal Rights, Liberties, and Freedoms. So things went a bit downhill from there. To be fair, given the impossible circumstances they found themselves in, America’s Founding Fathers did a cracking job of compensating, though their failures were due to - lacking two of the elements required to make a Balanced Republic - a long established Patriotic Aristocracy devoted to Duty and Service, and due to being Scapegoated as being responsible for the War of Independence, Nobody wanted to be King, so they were Synthesised via selected Senators (which collapsed when they were made elected, as it is impossible for two elected houses to work) and the Total disaster of the Power and Property Grab that is called Federalism, hence the National being Plunged into the appalling Civil War, so shortly following Independence. The Full American Constitution Continues to be the English Common Law Constitution, because Constitutions NEVER Go Away (and that reality may well be able to help fix all of the problems the USA is presently suffering from. As a side note, International Law is basically just a Copy and Paste of the English Common Law Constitution, and the USA so called Rules based order, is nothing more than a seriously bad and embarrassing Joke, attempted by Deranged Warmongering NEOCONS. 😡😡😡 Best wishes. Bob. PS. The Federalism Nonsense is whyfrom Day One,the European Union was Doomed to become a Disastrous Failure, followed by writing its own suicide note by turning interest rates negative in 2014. A rough calculation then revealed its inevitable Collapse was likely to start around 2025. Though already, every aspect of it is already severely bankrupt, and only trillions of dollars in support from the USA has been keeping it afloat since the 2019 REPO Crisis. The EU really Died in 2019, and is presently a dead man walking. Surprisingly, this reality is fully Grasped by President Macron of France, hence his panicking search for alternative options for France in recent years. 🤔 Bob. 👍🌟🌟🌟❤️

Dan Snow is an intellectual lightweight, I'm pretty sure he doesn't know what he's talking about 50% of the time. The only thing you can trust in these documentaries is the core factual content. As to the importance of the Navy, from Elizabethan times to the end of the 19th century the Royal Navy was very much the military arm of the Monarch, whereas the Army (at least before there was a standing army) was made up of regiments provided by the Barons. In the days of sail the Royal Navy needed huge amounts of rope, pulleys (blocks), canvas, oak, iron and other things and huge industries developed to provide these. The Royal Navy also needed men and, setting aside conscription during wartime, is the only military service I'm aware of that was allowed to literally kidnap people and force them into service (the "Press"). To your questions: The Spanish were pretty much everywhere in 'The Americas', almost up to Canada (but West of the Mississippi except for Florida) but they may have taken the firmest root in the south because that was where all the silver was found. Once the Aztecs had been wiped out and all their gold plundered, the Spanish became addicted to silver from the mines in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Bolivia, Panama, Chile and the Dominican Republic. Spain set up mints relatively near these mines, where the quality of the silver was assayed and the metal was minted into "pieces of eight (Reals)" or the Peso, otherwise known as the Spanish dollar. Once minted the silver coins were transported by llama and mule convoys to Spanish ports where they were loaded along with other valuable goods on to "flotillas of treasure ships" for transport back to Spain. Innovative techniques for coin production were developed in these mints and because of this and because of the gigantic quantity of coinage that was produced, the Spanish dollar became the world's first international currency. The US dollar is directly based on the Spanish dollar, as are the currencies of many South American and Asian countries as well as the Philippines. Edit: I meant to say Mississippi not Rio Grande, obviously.

The islands of the Caribbean are a natural resupply point, and a good centre of operations. Spanish ships based there could make easy voyages to Florida and Central America. Southern Spain is VERY hot, and the beaches around Cadiz are Hell on Earth if you don't have water. Of ancient militaries, only the Romans had a dedicated code of conduct in any modern sense. After the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell became a virtual dictator, but shortly after his death, the monarchy was restored in the person of Charles II. This is the only time Britain was a republic. Samuel Pepys diary, is an incredible document, both of the navy, and of everyday life at the time. He used a form of shorthand to allow him to write quickly (before the use of computers, shorthand was a method of copying dictated documents quickly, to be written up or typed later). Where do you think the US Navy got the idea?

Welcome back. Unfortunately Dan is rather good at the dramatics, but can be a bit light on historical facts. You asked the question about the origins of military. We had been at war with the French for eons. We had training in the use of the long bow for ever. Henry V by Shakespeare gives an account of Agincourt, where they decimated the French. The use of the longbow was compulsory for all males. The Royal Navy was formed by Henry VIII, after he formed Trinity House. Our history is formed by constant battles, both at home, amongst the 4 Couries of the British Isles and by hostilities with European states. We have Castles built to defend from the enemy within and without. I find it ironic that we learn are history in two parts, social struggles at home -v- our role in the world. We often forget that during the Napoleonic wars, we had the industrial revolution starting at home with the Luddites smashing up machines and killing people with the due consequences. We seemed to have lived in a constance turmoil. I guess it must focus the mind to deal with what is in front of you. Dan has a habit of missing the fact we had a merchant navy who predates the Royal Navy. Samuel Pepys was not a Mariner, he went to sea, but was a desk man, given the role as Master of Trinity House. He also reformed the Royal Navy. He used his knowledge gained from his observations of both services. Pepys is often overlooked in his roles and often just seen as the bloke who kept a diary and watched the great fire of London. It was the sinking of HMS Gloucester, with the potential loss of the heir to the throne that brought the reality of how shambolic things were, nothing was standard, just quess work. Whilst the sinking has has been forgotten it was a catalyst that brought many changes to England in the form of the Glorious Revolution.

Ahhhhhhhh the days of wooden ships and iron men. The Royal Navy has always held a place in the nation's heart, maybe not so much now because of the fashionable anti-colonialism thing, but we are still very aware of the RN's history and its place in making the country great. For evidence, just look at the crowds that gathered when the task force sailed for the Falklands, or even the arrival of the new aircraft carriers last year. Can I just say, you seem tired, sad even. Drake, Frobisher and the Killigrew family of Falmouth in Cornwall were all pirates. They are not to be honoured. They were all cutthroats and thieves.

No impressed. The origins of the Royal Navy are usually put in the early 1500s in the reign of Henry VIII. But the Royal Navy is not just the English Navy. For three hundred years it has been the British navy. During that same period of the early 16th century, the long-established Scottish navy built the largest warship in the world (eventually selling it to their French allies who were under a lot of pressure from the English). Government records in either kingdom were all pretty sketchy before 1660 but we know that the Scottish Navy was an established force with a permanent administration in around 1400 and naval fleets had existed since the 12th century. This was a country of many islands, making it a natural pool of maritime talent. In the 18th century, Scottish naval talent was not happy with their British career options and looked further afield, contributing significantly to the development of both the Russian Navy (Thomas Gordon & others ... ) and the United States Navy (John Paul Jones).

Yes the Navy was part of British culture which changed under Ted heath and Thatcher Prim ministers as they destroyed the armed forces.

Isn’t it awful? How can the English be expected to rebuild an Empire without a military.

Wouldn't trust a word uttered by Dan Snow. He simply recites a modern take on history.

I thought that the Magna Carta was, more or less, the genesis of the Constitutional Monarchy which has mostly survived to modern times, only slightly battered about, here and there. The term "Republic" confused me as well. As a mere colonial, I hope I can reasonably plead ignorance ...

Republic is a preferable word to Monarchy don’t you think? Although I wouldn’t want a republic based on the American model.

No, the royal navy is absolutely not prominent in our culture, it used to be, a hundred years ago. The only people who think about the navy are those who join the navy. Fun fact, the first captain to circumnavigate the globe was Sir Francis Drake.

@@DerekLangdon Oh dear, you're not very bright, are you? Ferdinand Magellan died in the Philippines before he could complete a circumnavigation. Hence, the first Captain to complete a circumnavigation was Sir Francis Drake.
