I always got a kick out of this one. I worked in a Blockbuster around the time that this came out on video...we couldn't keep the one rental copy we had on the shelves. We finally got three copies and we STILL couldn't keep any of them on the shelves. For about a year straight, "Do you have 'Empire Records' in?", "Sorry, nope! Unless it's on the reshelve counter over there." There is a really great film by the same director I love...'Pump Up The Volume'(1990) with Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis. If you get the chance, check that one out!

I bought the soundtrack to this after seeing it in the 90s, and much as I love it still to this day, I still feel the disappointment at discovering that Rene Zellweger's vocals weren't in the version of 'Sugar High' on the album.

I did the same. The closest thing to having that version are some versions people have cobbled together from the movie. It wasn't just that it was missing her vocals. The whole song had a different vibe.

This movie was iconic for me. It was the first time upperclassmen involved me in something (it was a watching party for our literary club) but I think it all really just clicked with us because all of the characters in the movie were essentially misfits and we felt we were as well. So its always had a special place for me.

I worked for Tower Records in 2009 when I was 19 (the same store the screen writer used to work at and based the movie off of) and I would love to say it's over exaggerated... I mean, I would love to...in defense. But I can't. Record stores were just hormone insanity fueled by a 10 hour work shift soundtracks. (And yeah, a lot of us actually slept overnight in the back rooms) The closest I could compare working in a music environment, is working in a kitchen.

Watched this last night for the first time in years. I actually didn't see it until about 2005 because I never remember it actually being out in theaters. I got a little emotional watching it. As someone who used to frequent Ear-X-Tacy in Louisville around the time this film was made (the bigger location), this just hits home. I literally saw some of the bands on the soundtrack at the WQMF2 fest in Cherokee Park (Ass Ponys, Throwing Muses). I felt like I knew most of these people in HS. It's the most 90s movie ever.

Rory Cochrane and Rene Zellweger were in at least 2 other movies together in the '90s worth watching: Love and a .45, and Dazed and Confused, in which she didn't have any lines. In that movie, his hair was down around his shoulders. In the beginning of Love and a .45, his hair was about half that length, and he had it shaved in the movie. So, it appears to be just growing back in this movie.

Back in the day... I worked in a video/record store and they filmed this in my hometown (Wilmington, NC). Lucas (Rory Cochrane) was my hero. (CSB alert) - Screen Gems shooting a Starz series a few years ago called Reprisal and I got a one-day extra gig that took me away from my regular Uber hobby. Next day driving I get a request from the studio to pick up a "Rory". Lucas was all grown up, shaved his head and had a huge beard. Really nice guy, probably a little creeped out that I remembered Empire.

Hi Mary. In the scene you commented on, about Jane blaming the employees for her quitting, in the "remix edition" of the movie for context. She went into Joe's office and her reason for quitting has nothing to do with them, she quit cause she wanted better for herself in her talk with Joe. I wish they included that part in the movie.

Liv Tyler STILL looks young. Robin Tunney (Debra) actually did shave her hair on camera. She was filming the Craft at the same time, so had to wear a wig. The concept behind Rex Manning is that he was a big star when he was younger, but now its fading and he's trying to cling to what's left of his star power. However, if you really pay attention (especially if you watch the extended cut) he's actually NOT as big of an asshole as it seems. He actually tries to be polite and not too demanding about the setup of the event. During the scene with Corey he's actually turning her off ON PURPOSE so she doesn't do something she'll regret, and because he saw those same doubts you did (and disgusting her would actually be less hurtful than if he outright rejected her). His "No applause" remark is actually calling the staff out on listening in on him and Gina, which whatever else you think about Rex that's kind of a douchey invasion of privacy. He's also fully self-aware and doesn't even bother to deny that everything they say about him is true. There was actually an alternate ending where Rex returns in the finale to help them save the store. Berko is played by punk rocker Coyote Shivers, and Sugar High is one of his songs. Another alternate ending had the entire cast get arrested over the party. Because it's actually illegal to have a rock concert on a public roof. Empire Records is often overlooked because it received NO marketing at all and the studio pretty much buried its release.
