Haiti is an imperialist playground in large part because France still holds grudges over the fact that Haiti gave them their first defeat during the slave trade era. This defeat of their most prided general Napoleon Bonaparte marked the beginning of a succession of defeats they would suffer as a result of losing a major part of their economic power (Haiti). They made Haiti pay them everything Haiti produced in order for them to recognize Haitian independence, which started the nation on an economic back foot, but that didn’t prove to be enough. This is purely my belief, but France (and by de facto, the U.S.) set out to make an example of Haiti to deter other nations from wanting to do the same, but it was too late. At this point it’s just grudge. The weapons in the hands of Haitian gangs are not ones they produced or captured; they are funded and provided on purpose TO further devolve the country into chaos and civil unrest. To prove that they cannot self-govern, and justify future occupation. Future occupation gives imperialists control of any future for the (so-called) independent nation, and free range to exploit its resources unchallenged.

Imperialism by definition is not singular to one country, many countries expand and use military to take control of area's. But are they instilling a democratic government or a dictatorship? Depending on what resources are here if USA and united nations pulls out here other countries will come here to establish control. For the most part here the government/police have failed it's citizens' here when you have gangs brutalizing citizens it's not a revolution or fight against imperialism these are gangs are attacking haitians. The problems in Haiti started the very first day it was formed. France taxed it with reparations that rendered the Haitian government moneyless. Haiti would then get loans from the same France at exorbitant interest, meaning an endless cycle of the former colonizer benefiting from its erstwhile resource rich colony. As if that is not enough, natural disasters haven't been kind to the country. Add the west imperial tendencies, you get a banana republic. Politicians using gangs to prop up and sustain their eligitimate governments and America creating chaos so they can install their favourites. Let Haitians choose their future and let the only intervention be monetary. Viva la Haiti
@hoodatdondar266410 ай бұрын
America did not create the chaos, but you have some interesting points. However, the us only wants a stable neighbor. Dear Jemima, how old were you when Aristide left in 2004? Genuine question. I am 43, I was 6 years old when the population shook the country to get rid of Jean Claude Duvalier and I remember a lot of it to this day. Ever since this event, it was coup d’etat after coup d’etat roughly from 1986 to 1991 when Aristide was democratically elected. The Aristide who left after his 1st coup d’etat is not the one who returned with Bill Clinton. It is disingenuous of you to tell the world that the armed gangs are controlled by the elites and bourgeoisie when you must know that it was Aristide who started it. Haiti has been in free fall ever since his return to power, he had his goons, his “chimeres lavalas” to silence the opposition and silence the youth in universities, he had his “ rat pa kaka” in every street corners and neighborhoods terrorizing the population. I don’t think you ever had to reply some stupid insane slogan to be granted passage to your street. Do not paint Aristide like he was some saint, and please stop blaming the world for our shortcomings. Politics are dirty for sure, but the level of corruption in Haiti is on Haitians! I'm just listening and learning. I pray for Haiti and it's people. I would love to see Haiti become stable in my lifetime. So many thoughts run through my mind. I wish I could say more about the situation but I don't know enough to speak on it but I agree with the person who commented on the common denominator. The same thing is happening worldwide just on a different scale. It's so hard to find a fair leader who is not greedy or is it that internal and external pressure makes for no solution. I always wanted to visit Haiti but I've only seen video of the nation. If my country can spend millions and billions of dollars on war and foreign policies why can't we come up with an agreement to invest in the Haitian people and economy. I can't say whether it's Haitian policies or our policies that are not lining up. I would just love to see peace and harmony everywhere but then I think if there's no war now there will be a bigger one later. Now I'm beginning to understand why our days are numbered. Life comes at you fast. I suppose that a conversation or debate is out of the question. How do adversaries come to an agreement?

_Defeating Dictators_ by Dr. George Ayittey has something to say. First you need "intellectual freedom" which means a free press so the public and intellectuals can discuss problems and their solutions. Then you need an independent electoral commission so there can be free and fair elections. Then an independent judiciary and so on with one reform encouraging more of the same.

@@sandal_thong8631 I like that suggestion and with that being said all of the independent observers would have to remain unbiased/neutral then their policies/solutions would have to be accepted. Haiti has been in a state of emergency for several decades. I have friends from there who escaped from the corruption during different periods. The biggest question is why is the D.R. flourishing on the same island. Yes, the U.S. State Department has a history of inserting itself into foreign affairs. I have been to a couple of those events in Africa. BUT, the local power structure is wasting or stealing resources.

For several decades the US has been involved in the destabilization of Haiti. The question should be why didn't the US destabalize D.R.? Second the local power structure is set up by the US. So you can blame them for that too. The oligarchs control the resources of Haiti. And the oligarchs aren't Haitian. No when are you going to admit that the US interference is the reason for this. Haitians aren't naturally violent and oppressive. They are hard working and industrious.

DR flourishing can easily be explained. France still has 3 colonies in the Caribbean that closely share the same ethnic, languages and cultural heritage with Haiti, if Haiti becomes successful, that would encourage these colonies to get rid of France and probably form a confederation with Haiti. France wants Haiti to be in the state it currently is. The US wants Haiti to be in the state in currently is, since the US never really forgives Haiti for forcing them to put an end to the old form of slavery and colonialism.
