Employees of a Tacoma laundry mat say they’re on high alert after a man they confronted about stealing used bear mace on a staff member and then took off. Tacoma police confirm it’s not the first time the alleged thief has hit the shop.
“There was no signs of anything, I was cleaning the machines and everything, you wouldn’t even notice that he did it,” said Sheila, a Tops Laundry employee who asked we only use her first name.
On a slow summer day inside this Tacoma laundromat, a man in a gray sweatshirt is seen on surveillance cameras reaching into a bag for what looks like a screwdriver - a few turns and the laundry machine coins inside are his.

If he likes to spend up to an hour doing this, you could of easily just called the police and they might of actually got there while he was still doing it a second time (Watch the live feed, play back the last few minutes if you suspect and sit back with your popcorn and watch an arrest)

anything under $900 is not a arrestable offense. So the police would just file a report and let them go.

But I always seem to get them to come for less maybe it's cuz I'm the security guard and they used to me usually being spot on with info they need and the footage already set up to view

an air tag in every machine would cost more than what he was trying to steal, he'd probably notice them, and then you have the problems of your employees keeping the batteries on them up.

@@Chemically_Induced you don’t gotta put an AirTag in every single machine. Did you see the guy ? He just quickly dumped the coins in a bag….. doubt he would even notice. The batteries last over a year.

Hardly anyone uses quarters there. Those machines are programmed to be primarily operated by cards and digital wallets. Not to say it’s not important to catch him, but if he got $20, I’d be surprised, which is probably why the cops did nothing. Shoplifting etc has to be over $20 by state law.

I don't know why people carry bear spray. Besides being illegal to defend against people, it is much weaker than police spray because of EPA regulations .

it's weaker but makes up for it in dispensed volume. I'm not saying that in this case it was used in self-defense, but I'd take over one of those little key-chain squirty things. also, virtually nothing is illegal for self defense unless it's a harm to the general public

@@Chemically_Induced a large can of Sabre or Fox is 4x as potent and can be bought in a similar wide spray pattern. As far as illegality, it's going to be impossible to convince a judge that you carry bear spray in an urban area to protect against bears. The federal statute is very clear and printed right on the can. Why risk that for something that's much less potent? Just get the legal can of riot spray.

Make sure all laundry mats know about this especially in the Northwest. And I say fight back if there taking food off your table. I would be looking to break my hand and wrist on the guys skull if I was in there! That is how hard I would throw the punch that it does that. And boy be ko'd in the wash machine then I would be holding my Shattered hand saying ouch and coughing from the bear spray.
