Things I've learned in 20 years of being in the work force: Never give a 2 week notice, your employer won't give notice of termination. Fair is fair. Lie on your resume. Resumes get you into the interview. Change a few dates, add a place or two. Nobody checks your references. Never go above and beyond. You aren't compensated, and it won't help you in the next round of layoffs. Never ask for a raise. Your company has millions in new hire budgets and only thousands in retention. Job jumping gets you raises. Staying in one spot for 10 years will cost you money. Never feel bad about being jobless. You can get one tomorrow at the temp agency. Donate plasma or whatever to get you by if need be.

In a somewhat similar situation, haven't taken action yet on it though. I make 38kish a year and as a single guy I feel like I'm treading water. The place I'm living at is technically low income housing and yet they still had the gall to raise my rent to a tad shy of $1200 a month despite living right next to a loud a#$ military base, motorcycles, and feeling like its in the middle of the ghetto. Yet whenever I see the director of my building at work he's always driving around in a Maserati or some s$%^. Makes it hard to be nice to the dude since to be honest I kind of despise him for not paying the workers below him a bit more. With the direction things are going I'm starting to think that 50k should be bare minimum for everyone that is willing to work hard and work honestly. Probably not gonna happen though so just try your best to not feel guilty about moving on since I'm sure upper management would try to pull that on you. Starting to think I'm too nice and I misplace my loyalty. Gonna have to work on this.

If you calculate how much wealth you are potentially losing over your working career, you would discover that "only 30k" difference amounts to MILLIONS of dollars if invested. Reading "Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell was frustrating for me, because whenever he would bring up the idea of "if you want to keep your employees, and avoid turnover, then pay more", the apparent "retort" by Sowell was essentially "well if the corp needs to pay more for each employee, then they can only afford fewer employees, and then unemployment goes up." It's like, uh, who do you think sets their allocated budget for employee salaries? The company! And for these big corporations, it's not like they're scraping by, counting pennies like "aww shucks, we might no have enough to pay the employees this week". How about these big corps start trimming a bit of fat off the bloated executive salaries and bonuses, and take a closer look at frivolous spending? How many jets does the CEO need? How about the yacht? Do they really need expensive dinners for "clients"? Anyone with any sense could likely go over the company "expenses", and pull spare funds out of any number of frivolous budgets, and allocate it to employee retention.

If the two job offers are in different locations, make sure you take into consideration differences in cost of living and quality of life. Twice as much income won't mean that much if the job is in an area with double the cost of living and/or people pooping in the streets.

Yes to all of this. I did the inverse of this: start working in a major city with a high cost of living, then moved to a rural area while maintaining my city wage. 20% raise almost by default due to a lower cost of living (and higher quality of life for me). Life is good.

I worked for a regional grocery chain a few years back. I worked in frozen and was one of the few employees willing to work overtime. Was that more loyalty than I owed them? Probably, but the work wasn't terrible, I enjoyed working in the cold environment in the hot summer, and because I did a good job, they gave me as many extra hours and OT pay that I wanted. I guarantee that I saved that company quite a bit of money simply because I stuck around to finish the job at hand after my coworkers' shifts ended. They would leave the job half finished, so I often stuck around for however long it took to get the job done because I had nothing better to do and enjoyed the extra pay and overtime hours pretty much whenever I wanted. I also took any opportunity to fill in for my coworkers if they couldn't show and if I didn't already have plans, so I developed a pretty good reputation there. Eventually there came a new department manager who arrived when I was away. I was back from my final year at college asking the hiring/scheduling manager I got along with to give me more hours over my month-long break when I realized I wasn't being given anything (college wasn't a complete waste of time, the experience even further red pilled me about the way things work, I learned some decent transferable skills, I gained some valuable life experience, and I got out of there without any loans and debt). I found out that the new department manager was one of those a-holes who demanded absolute loyalty while giving absolutely nothing in return. He wouldn't work with anyone unless they were available at his beck and call 24/7/365 and demanded that seasonal employees not get hours for not being available at all times "because they weren't committed." He then replaced a lot of longtime employees with new hires, gave everyone as few hours as possible between them all, and refused anyone overtime hours and pay so he could justify paying them all as little as possible because he apparently thought it was a good way to save the company money. I'm not saying it makes sense or that it was a smart and pragmatic idea, but that's what he did. Eventually, I asked the scheduling guy if there was anything they had available, and I ended up volunteering for the one job nobody wanted to do, to go outside in the freezing cold for hours on end to handle the carts (and there was probably parking lot garbage cleanup too, but I forget). I took it because it allowed me to get hours than I never would've gotten otherwise, and at least there was the silver lining that people would leave me alone, so I could listen to music and podcasts on the job to occupy my mind while I was out in the cold for hours on end. Because it was so miserably cold with ice and snow outside (single digit weather or close to it, I think) and because I was a good employee who took the hit nobody else wanted, the courtesy managers were cool about it and told me on the side that I could come in for breaks whenever I wanted to avoid freezing and could go back out as soon as I was warm again. They at least were sympathetic about the fact I was a good employee who got a raw deal because ofbthe new guy who didn't care (and I think a lot of the other employees and even some of the other managers didn't like him). After I left for college again, I didn't even tell the store I would no longer work for them. I just never called back in the years since. I bent over backwards for these people for about 3 years. As soon as a dick for a store manager showed up and took things over, all of the time I gave them and the money I saved them was treated like absolutely nothing, and I had to beg to do the jobs nobody wanted to do that I wasn't hired to do in order for them to give me the time of day. I got along with most of my coworkers, so it wasn't all bad, but seriously, screw that company. Loyalty is a two-way street, and anyone who doesn't value your time and efforts doesn't deserve it. I'm all for the idea of loyalty. It's an important virtue, but unreciptocated loyalty is just a good way to get exploited for the profit of others whi don't give a rip about you. Don't do it.

Figuring stuff out by trial and error is super efficient, you get a better understanding of the whole thing and can transfer that experience to other similar scenarios. Understanding why something does not work is as valuable as understanding why something works. Working in IT I can tell right away who taught programming to themselves by trial and error and who just copy pasted code snippets from Stackoverflow back and forth all their lives, they're the ones that have no idea what to do if they encounter a similar problem but that snippet from last time does not work in that context, because they do not even understand why it worked the first time.

My current company is a defense contractor and they're not bad. Decent companies are out there. They don't engage in the woke stuff beyond the most minimal lip service. We have an HR department but they're limited to answering time charging questions and doing onboarding. I've never seen them do much else. Yes, they're worthless, but to me it's whatever as long as they aren't bothering me. For the most part, they let me do my work (software engineering). Besides the need for heightened security awareness (the work is classified), it's pretty chill. Only three drawbacks: (1) They paid ok before inflation, but they haven't raised wages since inflation and so we're bleeding talent left and right. And, they probably won't raise wages anytime soon as we're bound to government contracts/budgets. (2) They won't promote from L1->L2->L3, etc before a certain prerequisite years of experience. You can be the best engineer at the company but stuck at L1 until you put your two years in. (3) The nature of the work (requires security clearance) requires the work to be done on site.

@MichaelDavis-cy4ok Жыл бұрын
You might not read this, but just in case, here's my two cents on how an employer can show or reward loyalty to good employees. 1: pay a wage that is above industry average for skilled employees. This will help you attract and retain the best employees in the industry, which will improve your bottom line with better production over time. 2. Provide the best healthcare package you can with the lowest premiums to your employees that is possible. Healthcare is killing family budgets in America, and is probably just as important a consideration to employees these days as pay is. Also investigate Health Savings Accounts instead of traditional health insurance. I've heard good things about these. 3. Give three weeks' paid time off per year instead of just two. You can even check out a Paid Time Off (PTO) plan instead of vacation + sick leave; it simplifies things on your end and gives flexibility to employees. 4. Give tuition reimbursement to employees and see if you can get a deal on online school for employees to get an Associate degree as well as Bachelor degrees related to your industry. This helps you build a better employee base as well as building loyalty. 5. Profit-share. Take 10 or 20 percent of profits and give it directly to employees at the end of the year. This also incentivizes performance directly. You can distribute it evenly or give more to employees with seniority, however you like. This gives employees a personal stake in company performance. 6. Be clear with expectations and performance evaluation. Create clear task lists for each position. Give quarterly evaluations like clockwork and stick to the task list only. Use clear statistics in their evaluations so that biases don't creep in. 7. Give cost of living wages to keep pay at least on par with inflation. Give additional raises based on experience and performance.
