I really do admire your strength and Will Power, in all your videos i have watched so far, I am not a chair user, but i thought it would be great to see how chair users get on in their daily routines etc. Anyone can end up been a chair user sadly, One lad that i used to go to school, with and later worked with, he had a spinal stroke, and now is a wheelchair user.

My twin sister and I were born with no legs (technically I have 12 inch nubs with no muscle, prosthetics not possible) and cannot do floor to chair, like not even close, I don’t get how paraplegics do it, having legs shouldn’t help a para in the process right ? I can transfer from the floor if my wheelchair is near another chair or surface by planting one hand on wheelchair other hand on the other surface and push my entire 64 pound self up. My sister can’t go from floor to chair either, if you watched me try it’s easy to see it’s just not possible. I don’t get how the physics work when paraplegics do it??? The things that keep me up at night
@EmpoweredPara
@EmpoweredPara 2 жыл бұрын
Lol. I couldn't do it for years. Literally thought it was impossible. I just kept trying. The physics just doesn't work for some people though. My friends arms are just too short so it might never happen for her. I say unless getting on the floor is important to you it's not worth losing sleep over lol!

Rewatching this as I'm planning to get a manual wheelchair to bridge the gap with my powerchair. Having rewatched it with that in mind, due to how I transfer on my powerchair I'm not sure if I could do an independent floor transfers on a manual chair, especially without the assistance of another object. Though I plan to check out mono/dual tube wheelchairs to see if that makes a difference as well as watch other videos. If neither approach helps with a safe floor transfer, then I'll see if having custom detachable attachments designed for me will help. Ones that can be removed and safely stored on the chair or anywhere when not needed.

Clearly, this is a team sport. With the useful comments, you can see…zoom to get everybody together. Crowd source. Not using a wheelchair, but fused ankle. Recovering from a fall has been my challenge. Each. Time. Little Giant makes a four step ladder that has superb center of gravity stability. Last time, I couldn’t lift with my arms. Bed was right there but I was bringing the mattress with me. Failed to plan. My cautionary advice…arms might not be there, plan for that. What we need is playground equipment. We need freebie fisher price kids slides. Curb alert usually. Get two. Work with one or both next to the couch. Secure to the floor, use a piece of plywood, butt skootch up. Looking at this with a fresh eye--the couch is a lazy Do Nothing. It would like nothing better than, if asked, to help your ass up. Have plywood under the cushions, it’s two pieces foldable, hinged to section it for floor distance. Make telescoping hand rail, use dollar store colorful pool noodles to cover steel rebar. You : Alexa , I fell. Lower the drawbridge. Alexa : Klutz, okay, got it. You need a cross member above the couch. It’ll look like a bookcase or a horizontal plant stand. It’s strong and will permit a way to use a hanging triangle to use your arms to pull yourself up. Use the couch first. Once the technique is down, a club chair might be better. Use pool noodles. Easy to cut because they’re light, they are slip resistant. Use gorilla tape to bind together…or use a dollar store pool air mattress instead. Observe and think …don’t create a fire hazard. If a lamp fell over, a burn could cause a fire. Have a helper to proofread your work…do you see a tripping hazard? Take pictures so you keep it fresh in your mind and can send your finished product to others. Poor couch….it feels bad because it can’t help you. It wants to be a drawbridge.

Thanks for sharing, for extra padding and please don't take this the wrong way, for your tail bone you may wish to try bicycle shorts as they have padding in them, or you could try disposable briefs for added cushion. Another thing I've come across is doggy ramps for in home use to give a ramp up to the couch or bed. They come in handy when getting back into my chair is a struggle, just an idea if anyone is interested.
@EmpoweredPara
@EmpoweredPara 2 жыл бұрын
I have actually thought about bicycle shorts and my friends use them! Vicar makes a butt cushion that is basically a padded diaper looking thing that you can strap on when sitting in the ground or in something that you can't use your normal cushion for.

Nice technique! I slide out exactly the same way, but a little different getting back in. I'll have to try your way. looks simple enough and probably a lot better than my way. I can get in, but it's not pretty! I pull myself up like you do until my butt is on the footplate. That's when it all changes for the ugly. I twist until I'm facing the seatback, then pull myself up the chair like I'm rock climbing, I then grab the seatback rails and pull until my chest in on the cushion. Then do a worm in a frying pan spin from my chest until my butt is close enough to do a regular pressure relief type move in the seat. Yeah...so not comfortable for strangers to watch! They freak out like OMG let's help this poor thing. But I get it done...independence rules!!!😂

When you mentioned that you had to get a new cushion, we wondered how much cushions cost. Did we read this correctly, that a wheelchair cushion costs about $700?? Man, that’s a lot of money! I know that for my wife to get a pair of dress shoes that will fit with her new AFO brace, it will cost us a lil over $2,000. And because she doesn’t like the style of them, we haven’t bought them yet. Being disabled is expensive!

@@EmpoweredPara ahhh thank you so much, I actually started working out again this last year and playing tennis again. After joining my husband on a couple outdoor adventures, i got a wake up call as to how weak I’d gotten since my teens. I’ll have to check to see if you have any weight lifting videos, I’ve only done body weight exercises like pull ups etc. I’d like build up the muscles a little bit, I’ve always been a little self conscious about being so small due to having my injury at 8 years old, I’m about 4 feet 7 inches tall ( if standing) and last I checked about 77 pounds (35kg). And my daughter is turning 5 this year and definitely wanna keep up with her

People make such a big deal over somebody in a wheelchair, in reality I hardly ever think about it. @morgancalvi6675
@morgancalvi6675 2 жыл бұрын
@@EmpoweredPara I didn't think they were actually flashing. Are they LED lights? If so, it may be because a camera opens and shuts its 'motion capturing shutter' a little bit faster than the speed of a flickering LED. When the frequency of the camera's frame rate per second (FPS) and the LEDs don't quite match, the flicker becomes visible on the camera screen. I dabble quite a bit into photography. I'm sure dust particles in the air play a role as well. You can supposedly check this with a smart phone...but I'm not sure how.
