I’m a retired teacher and I love the map wall🥺I could picture you using it as a backdrop for a little library area decorated with your vintage lunch boxes and school related treasures. I admire your positivity about the quirky aspects of the Orchard House. You will make it a wonderful home. I love the Boho Cottage videos too. Over the years I have lived in a van,a beach cottage, and a houseboat. Now a little house in the woods. All the best to you,Emily🌸😘

@@emilyretro I mostly loved living on my houseboat. Winter was a little difficult at times but I raised my two kids on the boat and lived on it for 17 years. Even moved it onto land and lived in it while my partner built our house. The boat was moored in the harbour in Victoria British Columbia 🇨🇦

Emily, first off..you are just delightful to watch. Second, I have a proposal for your dining room and I request that you give my idea some honest consideration. I would like to suggest that you watch a movie by Wes Andersen called "Moonrise Kingdom". It has a definite 1960's set design mixed with an outdoorsy camp vibe. (I thought of it as soon as I saw your vintage MAP wall). Andersen's movies have a signature retro style and could be a fun twist that would work well with the wood paneling....yet still incorporate the groovy interiors that make you happy🌸! Just food for thought💕. Much love, XOXO 🥰

First of all thank you doing these videos, I’m always waiting for the next one. I’ve lived in a log house almost 30 years, we built it ourselves and ya it can be dark, I have lots of lamps, table, swags, it makes it so cozy, my house has also been compared to Wes Anderson, so proud of that . I’m glad you’re keeping the wood, even after all these years I still love wood. I’d go avocado green in the kitchen, maybe just remove the Center ones first but you have so much nice stuff you might want to remove more and love your jumpsuit! Well I can’t wait to see what you all do, it’s such a little dream cottage, thank you for showing us around.❤

Not sure if you would want to change out an appliance, but we bought a 50s/60s stove when ours broke and it really changed the vibe of our kitchen. An avocado green stove would look so cool in your kitchen if you’re going for a 70s style. Granted older stoves don’t always have the features as a modern. But our old stove is a work horse and seems more reliable and solid than new ones.

Congrats on the new place! One idea to lighten up some of the wood paneling in the living room and bedroom would be renter friendly peel and stick removable wallpaper. Fourth - and hear me out, put the bed in the closet facing out so the closet would be your headboard. Paint it or put a groovy sheet, some fun vintage string lights and it would be so cute. If you put it where it is, you’re gonna freeze. Against and outside wall and covering the vent. Get a bureau to hang what you have to and fold the rest and put in a dresser! Thanks for the tour! Your new home has sooo much potential ❤ All the paneling makes me think barkcloth curtains and pillows and vintage paint by numbers 😍 This may sound weird but, what if you put your bed in the small bedroom? My thought process is that we pretty much just use a bedroom for sleep, so that isn’t maximizing the space in your house. The bigger bedroom could be a combination sewing room and office.

Emily! Your new place is perfect for you! You are the blessing that is coming to it, to liven it up and give it the freshness it’s been waiting for. I’m certain that whatever you do will be great as you do it with so much love! I love the little shutters and that would save money on extra windows treatments for now. I would definitely open up the center kitchen cabinets (glass doors would be gorgeous) and I would seriously consider putting glass doors on all 3. It would give you more chance to add color to the back since it’s a dark small space. A decorator taught me that things in 3 balance a room. I could also see you hanging a colorful vintage apron on the small sliver next to the fridge. It’s going to be so much fun seeing the place transform with your style and charm! Best wishes sweet Emily and we’re right here with you! ❤❤

First of all, the location is gorgeous. I would LOVE to live somewhere so dreamy and pastoral. The yard/garden is so pretty, once it's cleaned up a bit it's going to look amazing. The house itself is also really cool, I'm a fan of the wood paneling personally (and the cute wallpaper). I like your idea of using sheets as curtains and to break up/cover some of the paneling, because there is A LOT. I've seen people do kind of a faux "wallpaper" by attaching sheets to the wall. I'm sure you'll come up with something really cute. As for the bedroom, maybe you could move the bed into that recessed closet area, with the headboard against the back of the closet wall. You might have room to add a small wardrobe to keep you clothes in, or use a clothes rack and display your cute vintage clothes. Just an idea.

First time commenter, long time follower. Your presence and charm is such a breath of fresh air! The people you're renting from have no idea how lucky they are to have you!!! I love how crafty you were to find this place, your patience paid off! My only tips would be that hanging macrame plant hangers would help soften the look of the wood paneling. Mirrors also would help bounce more natural light around the living room. I'm excited to see what you do with this space, and I hope you enjoy the freedom of living alone, you absolutely deserve this! Also YES conduit pipe is soo much cheaper than curtain rods, and customizable to any length, and easy to spray paint!

I love your new place and I agree put your desk office area by those look out glass doors, you will need bucket of the command hooks. Its got a cozy feel to it once you get it decorated. I love love your porch decorated some now. Your skylight could allow some plants too, I agree to its a place to put your winter boots, some shoes, coat area, maybe a bench to put on your snow boots, or other shoes b4 you leave the house add a some shelves on one side for decorating, etc. Having the kitchen island will change the whole space to be more functional, cooking preparation area, friends sit at or just yourself, or friend's kids helping you make something or even make cookies. Thats great you have your dad to help. I hope the heater get fixed or figured out right away. I love the quiet of nature sounds so honestly I would love to live there myself. I have a female orange cat who would love outside adventures there. I live in a country town but this time I am on a area that not far from the freeway and too much traffic for my cat to be safe so she is an indoor cat now. Neat having all the animal life, birds nearby would be so relaxing. I assume you will have a storage unit or part of a garage not on the property for things that don't fit there. Would the landlord let you whitewash a room if you promise to restore the wood to the original color when you move out I mean for like bedroom to lighten it up and so its more relaxing when you go to bed. Just an idea not sure landlord will let you. So cool it didn't eat your cats food. Yes the area outside look like shrubbery, loose branches need to be clean up but I think it has huge potential for improvement and the benefit for your landlord when you decide to live somewhere else and he increase the next tenant's rent because of your updates and improvements. You have an area if you wanted sit outside in the sun eat your lunch or go for a walk near the water.

Shutters were very popular in the '70s. I had white shuuters and in one roomi painted the shutters bright yellow! I still love the way you can quicklyopen shutters in the morning and close them at night for privacy. Walmart sells a 12inch wide white shelving unit that is stackable. You can easily spray paint them and some have doors If you have 12 inches beside your fridge, that might be a quick storage solution. The narrow space on the other side could be space for a mop and broom holder or for an ironing board with a vintage flower power sheet made onto a cover. I love all the eccentricities of your old farmhouse rental! Looking forward to seeing how you decorate it.

I'm from an area where closets are not traditionally built into our houses, so many people buy freestanding hanging racks or wardrobes. I think if you turned the closet in your bedroom into an alcove rather than a traditional closet and then pushed the head of your bed into it that might open up some of your bedroom plus keep you from having to sleep over the vent or right next to a window. You can even arrange curtains from the door frame so that it's like a canopy bed.

Great video! You have some good ideas for "fixing up the place"! Watch out for the weight of things on the command hooks-I hung a picture with glass and it fell down and broke. So sad. Maybe put your bed on an angle under the 2 corner windows. I've seen that in pictures and it looks like it makes the room bigger. The landlord friend is going to have to let you put some shelving on some walls-all sheet walls will get dusty. Closet rods are easy to put up-but look at some closet systems with a shelf across the top and the rod below. Lastly, he really needs to let you paint the kitchen cabinets for cleanliness and lightening up the room-really think about white-classic and would highlight the wallpaper! I'm sure there are wall paper cleaners and regluing products. You are going to be studying ideas at Home Depot and Lowes-If you have a Walmart near you-they have lots of hardware and organizational things much cheaper. Curtain rods-commmand hooks too!! Ha! Keep a stiff upper lip sweetie-we are here for support-wish I was closer. :o)

Love this house and it has a lot of potential! Take your time and live in it before you make decisions. Love the name Apple Orchard. You might even decide after you are there you might not repeat what you had before. I use eclectic all the time. Love the wood paneling and the shutters. I would leave the doors on the small cabinets that way you can store anything. You can always measure the back wall of the cabinets and cut out sections of cardboard or foam to cover and place in back space to avoid painting. I thought same as other comments place headboard in closet or cady corner it. Take tall cabinets your friend taking out and turn it for storage in another room. Cover map with quilt, macrame hanging etc. This will be fun for you to treasure hunt. Good luck!!

Love your new home!! I think your idea of using vintage sheets on some of the wood will lighting up the space. Also I would put your desk in the dining room to enjoy that view!! Lots of potential!!❤

The map would actually work quite well as a 1960's office. Green lamp etc. Think vintage office stuff.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with your new place! Love that wall map especially! I always had shutters, they are great, not just for adjusting light, provides some insulation. A cute small kitchen lamp would provide light and might look cute at one end of the counter or a battery operated one on the center island you're putting in. have fun!

Ooooooooh and battery operated lamp on the island what a stellar idea, thank you!! And thanks for the info about shutters being good insulation. Since it’s such an old house I bet heat loss will be an issue in the winter so that’s a great tip!

Looking forward to seeing everything you do to transform your new space! The shuttered windows are cute, and I love the suggestions of camp-inspired decor for the living room. For the map wall - what about covering it with big "upholstered" panels? Maybe something like styrofoam insulation panels covered with quilt batting and vintage sheets with button tufts. It could probably be stuck to the molding with command-type velcro, and it'd be cute on its own or as a backdrop for a shelf. Also, narrow shelves around the fridge would be great for spices and canned goods.

I LOOOOOOVE that suggestion for adding fabric in front of the maps!! Everyone is making me reconsider hiding the maps 😂 but if I go there fabric route I will keep your suggestion in mind. Thanks!! ☺️

I am excited for you. It will take some elbow grease and some creativeness but there is so much potential. What a diamond in the rough. Very nice of your friend to offer this to you to rent. Its a win win because they know they will be getting a decent tenant. They would have had to be so careful with someone living so close to them. You have saved them a search for someone trustworthy and they are offering the space for a price you can afford. Well done.

I actually do like the shutters and was thinking of adding them to my cape cod style cottage. Now my windows have layers of curtains so I thought it would be freeing just to have shutters. You use sheet curtains for your cute style so can understand why you might not like the shutters. Feel certain it will be a cute refuge for you.

I am so excited to see what you do to your new space! Thanks for taking us on this journey with you. My family and my husband's family are all from Michigan and call them 'door walls' and you call them sliders. I love that. Personally I like the shutters but I also live in a farm house so... Will you be able to pick the apples yourself come fall? Also, good luck on the cat friend! I'm sure you can do it. 😺

Hi Emily, great video! Lovely fixerupper 😅 for the kitchen cupboards are you allowed to paint them or use like vinyl on them? I'd use a light warm colour as it's dark and north. For on top of the tiles I'd go for the sticky back tiles I've seen some awesome ones. Green is beautiful but a cold color. To get more light into the kitchen maybe you can strategically place mirrors so the light will get into the kitchen? The wood panelling is it possible to sand them and put on a lighter stain or linseed oil? So it's not so dark? In the living room ask if you can put up a "picture rail" basically a 2x4 near the sealing and you can hang art from cables. If you use picture frames with glass or plastic it will reflect the light. If the wooden floors are ugly maybe you are allowed to paint them in a light colour? The cupboard in the bathroom can be your broom closet 😅 it might be too damp for clothes. Maybe you can relocate some of the bathroom mirrors to the darker kitchen area? I love the shutters keep them and combine them with cute vintage curtains. I would change the position of the bed an put it against the other wall. Would it fit the space what is the closet? I would paint the closet and find a vintage wallpaper to make it a feature wall. And see if there is space on the other wall for a small cupboard for hanging clothes. Usually the seasonal clothes are not that many and maybe you can find another place for the non seasonal clothes? I put mine in an IKEA bag under the bed. It hard to see how much space you have with all the stuff of the owner still standing there. I'm sure it will be a lovely place to live ❤

Wow! So much potential and those gardens are amazing! Could you store your cleaning supplies in the bathroom cabinet with no shelves? Would your bed fit in the bedroom with shutters? That one looks so bright and lovely and I *adore* the shutters! Then you could use the bigger bedroom as your storage/ sewing/ crafting room and not worry about the vent or the naked closet. That folding room divider is awesome!!! Can’t wait to see it dressed up with vintage floral sheets!! I love the atrium off of the sunroom and the sliding doors in the living room! You could try mirrors opposite the sliding door to brighten the living room.

The story of the walls is so nifty!! I actually like the way the wood paneling looks (am I weird?!?!). I think it will perfectly balance a 70’s color palette, and omg yes the SWAG lights, do that!! The exact one you showed was such a vibe!! I have mixed feelings about those wooden shades but I think little sweet curtains would open up the room!! Also, love that jump suit and I’m so happy that you found a place to live in that is special and affordable, the universe lined things up so perfectly for you and I truly think you attracted it with your good spirit.

Aw thanks a bunch, Kristy 🥹💕 No you’re not weird liking the wood paneling!!! I like it too a lot! If I had more natural light in the living room I would REALLY love it. I’m a bit concerned about how dark it will feel in the winter but hopefully by then I’ll have a lot of decorations to liven it up ☺️ thanks for your input!
