Very nice vid. That is very useful information. I think I need to use chalk/rosin powder. Another tips/trick vid (if not already done) - is how to prevent erhu string loops (where the manufacturer made the loop excessively large, instead of relatively small) from its tendency to keep detaching from the metal terminal pin (at the terminal point at the bottom of the erhu) while we're trying to set up the erhu with a new string. So far, my method has been to just politely ask a second person to hold down the string at the terminal point while I work on the other (tensioning) end of the erhu. I'm currently thinking of using a thick rubber band to hold down the string at the resonator end (ie. put the rubber band around the resonator, which holds the string in place at the terminal end. Or to use painters tape to hold down the string at the terminal end.

Yes you can get a friend to hold the bottom to prevent it from coming out. What I usually do is to wind the string at the pegs until the loop is near to the bottom. There would be a little slack and I can tighten the tension by pulling the strings to prevent the loop from coming out. Hope you get what I mean as its a little difficult to describe in words.

@@EasonMusic Thanks for that nice suggestion! I know what you mean. The issue I had was that the wound wire on the peg is like a coiled spring, which wants to unravel. So I had to ask somebody to hold the loop end down while I had a chance begin to wind the peg - and use my fingers at the peg end to stop the coiled wire from unraveling while winding. Quite tricky!

As a woodworker, I would get sandpaper and gently sand the shiny spots of the peg.

I am surprised that you don't mention "violin soap" which is used for slipping violin pegs and think it must be well suited for Erhu pegs.

Why don't use thread seal tape to wrap the pad?

Is there any risk, if the friction is too strong, that the central axis would break ?? I know it sounds like a stupid question but I'm a beginner and I am very afraid to push the peg too far inside or be too brutal...

Two years or so later. It might be possible. But fortunately, I think replacement pegs can be purchased. But then again, just apply in relatively small quantities to start with. As in ---- don't go overboard with the powder. Also - I think that if we only use our own hand-strength to push the peg into the hole (and not use excessive force like using impact force to drive the peg right in), then everything should be ok.
