I will translate the lyrics: My strength is the same as the earth's ground I can move mountains. That's what I am. I can crush diamonds with my hands. I'll do anything for you, I'll build and carry and destroy But in my heart, I'm like a circus. I've been walking a tightrope Hercules in my heart, running away from the fight But I know that if I run away, my value will disappear If I don't change my ways, one day the slightest stimulus may destroy me Someday, the pressure will grow and grow My heart feels like it's going to pop Trust me, I'll be fine If I can't carry a heavy load If I can't carry a heavy load, I'm worthless, I can't lose But the pressure is still growing and growing It doesn't stop, it tickles and chases me Trust me, it's okay If I get crushed, then... Where's my value? I have to do this. The truth is, I'm so worried I won't be able to protect my family. I just want to get away from the iceberg that's right in front of me. I ask myself how long I can hold on to this power. Every time I stop the wind from knocking over the dominoes, the next wind comes up again If I unburden myself I wonder if I'll be filled with joy My heart beats in my chest I surrender to the end of the sky Still the pressure Heavy, heavy, heavy It's coming at me Endlessly, the pressure grows and grows My heart feels like it's going to pop Leave it to me, I'll be fine Even if I bend, I won't break I won't crumble for the sake of my family Never. Somehow the pressure just keeps growing and growing It doesn't stop, it tickles and it chases me Leave it to me. Trust me. It's okay. If I can't do this, I'm nothing, right? I won't lose. Don't feel the pressure

Love Yumecchi voicing this! (Fun fact, I’ve actually met her!) However, I think they really dropped the ball on the translation. While most of it works, they entirely dropped the nuance of the family thinking it’s fine to leave everything up to Luisa, and all the lines like “give it to your sister,” “never wonder if the same pressure would’ve pulled you under” have been changed to “leave it to me, I got this. My value is lost if I falter.” I’m usually ok with creative liberties since the languages are so very different, but because I think these are the most important lines in the whole song, I think the translation really does a disservice to the original :(
@unsuspectingbirdmother3 жыл бұрын
Hmm... consider it this way: "worth", "value", "honor" - these are concepts and ideas that are very integral to Japanese culture and ideology and have been so since... well, as long as the Japanese have existed. These are the pillars upon which they have based their social conduct, hierarchy and, to an extent, many of their older, outdated laws that have since died but whose "weight" and graveness still as fresh today as it was many years prior to the Edo period. So, while the crucial lines in the English version of the song have been changed to what seems and feels like a watered down 2-liner in the Japanese version, when you know the context of said vernacular in Japanese, you will realize that it just as heavy as the original. Translations can only convey so much, y'know?
@kailenefalls86113 жыл бұрын
@@unsuspectingbirdmother While I would agree that cultural context needs to be considered, this isn’t a Japanese story so Japanese people are going to be watching this and not expecting the same types “honor” and “value” from a different culture. If this was a movie about a Japanese family, these things could be implied. But it being a Colombian family, the same cultural context would not be expected. Regarding the main phrasing, some rhythms would have to changed a bit, but just adding the phrase “your sister” or changing the verb context to be more nuanced as being from a third party would immediately solve the problem. The current translation makes all three refrains exactly the same wordage, and implies that Luisa is breaking under the pressure she puts on herself. Meanwhile all three English verses use unique phrasings to show that an outside force (the family/abuela) is the main instigator. I occasionally do interpretation and translation for TV and film here in Japan, and like I said in my original comment, I’m usually pretty forgiving and don’t usually nitpick about some creative liberty, but when the whole nuance/intention of the song is changed, I take issue.

Hey--I was about to reply to your comment and then I didn't and then I realized that I know you! (This is のり from 森の池) I agree that it's kinda too bad that we've lost any explicit references to the family putting pressure on Luisa in the refrain, but idk if I agree they've "dropped the ball". Like, given that she's talking to her 妹, isn't it strongly implied that the pressure is created by her role in the family? More importantly, in a Japanese language context, if she *explicitly* says that her family is the one putting pressure on her, doesn't that come across as bratty or ungrateful in a way that it doesn't really in English? Like, I get what you're saying to the other commentor that we can't assume a Japanese audience will interpret a Japanese family dynamic in a "foreign" movie, but if we're talking about normalized values of what a "family" is, isn't making the reverse assumption also dangerous? After all, my Boss doesn't understand why he can't walk into an American McDonald's and order a Double Double (coffee with cream and sugar), and I feel like that requires less cultural imagination than understanding Latinx American family dynamics. Plus, the visuals are doing at least some of the heavy lifting, even if they're absent from this video--Luisa holding up the house, the Titanic being called the "Madrigal", etc.
@kailenefalls86112 жыл бұрын
@@CultureStress Hey! Nice to randomly see you on the internet. Yeah- of course it’s a personal pressure. But it bothers me that they repeat the same “leave it to me” phrasing all the times, indicating that it’s Luisa putting the pressure on herself. To me, these lines are the most important (and for me most poignant) lines in the whole song, and if I had heard only the Japanese version, I would have gotten the “pressured” aspect, but I would have felt like “Luisa, stop pressuring yourself!” versus “the family needs to cut her a break!” “Give it to your sister, your sister’s older,” “give her all the heavy things we can’t shoulder,” “see if she can handle every family burden,” “never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under.” All four of these lines have basically been translated to “任せて信じて大丈夫” “任せて私は大丈夫” , all in first person. So the implications is that she’s the main one putting pressure on herself. It’s a pretty important distinction. Changing the lyrics to お姉さんに任せてあげて wouldn’t come across as bratty, and doesn’t have any cultural implications. Plus pressure on yourself vs pressure from your family are pretty culturally universal, so I don’t feel like the distinction is treading on any culture issues. It’s nitpicky, I know. Usually I’m all for natural vs literal translation. But since it’s the essence of the whole song, I really don’t thing the translation does the song justice! (And the visit also details you mentioned would still apply if she was putting the pressure on herself, so they don’t really change the perspective)

They did an awesome job of translating the song. Here's the last line as an example: いつしかどんどん増してくプレッシャー 止まらずチクタク追いかけてくるの 任せて信じて 大丈夫 これができなきゃ 私の存在価値ないでしょ? 負けない 感じない プレッシャー Before you know, bit by bit it grows, the pressure, Without stopping, tick tock, it chases after me Leave up to me to take care of? That's fine. If I can't do this, my existence is worthless, huh? I can't lose I don't feel it, the pressure. (I tried to keep the word order even if it's not normal in English) I'll translate the rest if someone requests. Random add on: I laughed a little at the movie title's translation: "Mirabel and the house riddled with magic." The 魔法だらけの家 (mahō-darake no ie) feels funny because だらけ means to be full of/covered in something pretty bad. I expect the word to show up in an expression like クソだらけ (covered in shit).

I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous I'm as tough as the crust of the earth is I move mountains, I move churches And I glow 'cause I know what my worth is I don't ask how hard the work is Got a rough indestructible surface Diamonds and platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em I take what I'm handed, I break what's demanding But Under the surface I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus Under the surface Was Hercules ever like "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"? Under the surface I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service A flaw or a crack The straw in the stack That breaks the camel's back What breaks the camel's back it's Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'till you just go pop, whoa Give it to your sister, your sister's older Give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder Who am I if I can't run with the ball? If I fall to Pressure like a grip, grip, grip and it won't let go, whoa Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger See if she can hang on a little longer Who am I if I can't carry it all? If I falter Under the surface I hide my nerves, and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us Under the surface The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is Under the surface I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this? Line up the dominoes A light wind blows You try to stop it tumbling But on and on it goes But wait If I could shake the crushing weight of expectations Would that free some room up for joy Or relaxation, or simple pleasure? Instead we measure this growing pressure Keeps growing, keep going 'Cause all we know is Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt And see if she can handle every family burden Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks No mistakes just Pressure like a grip, grip, grip and it won't let go, whoa Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa Give it to your sister and never wonder If the same pressure would've pulled you under Who am I if I don't have what it takes? Don't feel the pressure.

So refreshing as Japanese dubs always make women sound breathy and kawaii/sexy, Japanese is beautiful but they always ruin the emotion of dubs with all that misogyny. Thankfully the character of Luisa meant they couldn’t do that and this is great

I have a feeling your only exsposure to japanse dubs is for cartoons...i feel it might be diffrent if you watchef a dub from a more relastic show since they like to exagrate voices for more exagreated shows
@r_travel43062 жыл бұрын
@@princeOpalite3650 the point I’m making is that I would prefer if Japanese dubs of animations that aren’t Japanese to sound more like normal authentic people and not like ‘dubs’. I wish there was less of a distinction between actual Japanese voices and the dubs because it detracts from the realism of the characters, especially when they are supposed to be portraying people of different cultures and languages themselves. If a Japanese anime wants to go crazy on the vocal choices that’s great but ultimately when it comes to Disney movies I feel like there needs to be an emphasis that these aren’t Japanese characters and they should be voiced as such 🤷♂️ As I said though I still think Japanese is an absolutely beautiful language and while my grasp on it is basic, I still appreciate the efforts of the voice actors as they are experts in their craft and literally influence their field on a global scale

While I understand the sentiment to a certain degree, putting all Japanese VAs' work under the umbrella of unrealistic and overdone is a bit unfair. Depending on the media, you'll get different voices, and while there might be a certain preference (for a higher pitch, for example), that is _in certain cases._ Not all of them, so if that is not to your liking, there are plenty of VAs that will do something different. Not to mention that a higher pitch doesn't need to mean it's done poorly - it can be, absolutely, but it also can if it's a lower one, the two aren't inherently related. Lastly... misogyny? Your exposure to Japanese voice overs (and media, for that matter) must be pretty limited if that's the conclusion you come to. While yes, they're playing a role, the majority of female (since those are the ones we're focusing on) Japanese VA's have naturally slightly higher-pitched voices and they use that, not purposefully bring it higher to the point of ears exploding upon hearing them. And, again, the "breathy/sexy" aspect depends on the character they're playing, you can't really blame that on the VA, more on the writer. That leaves us with just the naturally higher pitch, and if that's misogynistic... that's a yikes from me

Suena un poco a qué la cantante se esfuerza por cantar en un registro de voz más bajo, no digo que no cante bien, sino que ese no es su tono natural.
