I think they mostly did the color coded family thing because it makes it easier for people to understand who belongs where on the family tree. A bit of visual shorthand because they have so many characters.

i love how the more the kids pushed mirabel to talk about her gift the song kept speeding up creating that extra tension.

One really cool note on the colors of the families clothing.. So Mirabel, her sister Louisa and her mom and dad are all in shades of blue. But Isabella, also Mirabel's sister, is in pink. This is to tie in to the fact that she's Abuela's favorite, as Abuela is wearing red. In "What Else Can I Do" Isabella stops trying to be perfect and what her Abuela wants her to be, and just starts acting like herself and expressing her true self. In the song, she splashes a variety of pollen all over her dress.. and by the end of the song, all of the pollen had mixed together to make her dress a kindof dark shade of blue. When she stops trying to be the perfect child her Abuela is pressuring her to be, her colors match up with the rest of her siblings and parents, rather than her abuela. Theres so many little tiny details like this in this movie, every time you watch it you can notice something new if you really pay attention. It's so good.

The clothing colors represent the colors of the Colombian flag. Abuela is dressed in red. Also notice that Colombia is spelled out in flag colors on the wall near the village children.

I hadn’t noticed the colors because I’m not visual, but it makes perfect sense. Julieta’s family are all calm, focused, grounded… so they’re associated with blue. Pena’s family are all anxious, excitable, flighty and silly… so they’re associated with yellow. The colors represent their energy. Bruno is green because energy wise he’s in between them both.

@TheOneUH8 I think they’ve got problems. They just didn’t get songs about them. Delores’ gift causes her physical pain and she’s being asked to eavesdrop on her crush who her cousin is being married off to, and she has a massive secret that’s breaking her heart and she can’t do anything about it (don’t want to spoil that plot point). Camilo is narratively pointless, but in the family he’s the clown. He doesn’t have a strong sense of self and spends a lot of time being other people. I bet Abuela yells at him almost as much as Mirabel. Antonio is probably the most well adjusted, but he has his parents’ influence mixed with Mirabel’s strong influence.

Disney stated that the colour coding between the families is an intentional cue, to easily help differentiate the smaller family units, Julietta, Agustin and their daughters wear cool tones whilst Pepa, Félix and their children wear warmer tones. I’m unsure about Bruno though? But my take is that Bruno is primarily coloured in green which Disney has long associated with its villains (Scars eyes, Malificents fire etc etc) which is what Bruno is essentially made out to be throughout the film, however green is also symbolic of growth and renewal, which is what happens when he finds his way back into the family. Who knows though haha Something I’d also personally noted is Abuela Alma wears a Maroon/burgundy/Magenta mix which is often a mix of both warm and cool tones, (which as an artist and fashion graduate) I learned are also considered matriarchal/lead/motherly or authoritative colours. Which if you look back through previous and older animated Disney films at characters like ‘Matriarch’ the eldest elephant in the animated Dumbo, Queen Leah/Auroras mother in Sleeping Beauty, Lady Tremaine in Cinderella for example are all wearing colours within the Magenta/Maroon Spectrum. But that’s just my take on the theory for Abuelas colours haha.

My take is that the green colour is based on emeralds, for which Colombia is known for, and which former indigenous groups local to Colombia used to "see the future".

Then you got the grandmother's song which is in Spanish and starts with the word Dos. But I ain't going to try spelling the second word I'd just mess it up.
