The thing about this song is that Mirabel is revealed to be a "villain" at the start. We relate and sympathize so much with her by that point in the movie, that it really shifts the perspective. She "hated" her sister. Was upset at how perfect she was. Was annoyed with everything. It wasn't just Abuela forcing her to be perfect, it was everyone, Mirabel included, not only expecting perfection her whole life but treating that as her sole identity. And obviously since she's the hero and this is a movie, Mirabel's attitude changes in this moment, but that was still a decade or more of Isabella feeling like her sister hated her for something she "had" to do. Something she "had" to be. And something she didn't want to begin with. Doing something you don't want to do yourself. And watching people you love hate you for it. But feeling like you need to do it anyways. That is a strong emotional crossroad to empathize with.

I love how you see the true isabella in this song and also how you see Mirabel grow (pun intended) she starts off like let's hug to get the prophecy over with, then wtf confusion (hanging vine this is fine bit) to starting to understand her sister and see her for who she really is. And finally encouraging Isa to be true to herself (hanging vine go/grow bit)

Also remember at the breakfast table when Dolores said Mariano wanted 5 babies and Isabela had the flowers pop up in her hair? Abuela plucked off the only white one when she said the word "perfect". The only one obsessed with perfection and calls Isabela perfect is Abuela Also Lin-Manuel wanted a 90s rock song so they essentially made this song a rock concert. They also wanted her to have a rock look so that's why she gets the multi colored hair and dress

I was just about to point that scene out. I thought I might have been the only one to notice.

I love this song, it makes me so happy. Of course it's about Isabela being pressured into being perfect, but it's also about connecting with her sister, them understanding each other, and Isabela being finally able to express herself and explore who she is and it just warms my heart.

Isabella gets a lot more hate than she deserves, I love that you cut straight through to what's going on inside her. I also laughed way too hard at "That's why she's such a bitch!" She's mean to Mirabel, but one of the things that happens in a family where love is a commodity that must be earned (and maybe can be lost) is that love starts to feel like a finite resource. It turns a sibling into competition for something you desperately need. It turns them into an enemy you have to fight to survive. I grew up in an atmosphere like that, and I carry so much guilt for the way I treated my little brother when we were children; I hated him and I didn't even understand why. This movie is amazing.

Cinema Therapy pointed out that the cactus is an excellent comparison to Isabella herself. I live in New Mexico, and, right now, the cacti are blooming. They’re beautiful. One of my favorite plants. Beautiful, but prickly and demanding about their space and conditions. Isabella isn’t this warm, tender character, and that’s perfectly okay.

I'm an artist for a living, so painting and making everything perfect is literally how I earn my way through this world and this song - it just hits such a personal note

i also love that Isabella at the end of the song matches what she said about the cactus. The colors in her hair and on her dress after she got the colored pollen all over her is not symmetrical or perfect as Abuela might see it, but she still looks stunning. (I'd argue more beautiful because this is her and not a facade)

I love your Harry Potter references. I know you were in the fandom because you mentioned ‘Lily Evans’ in another video! Me too 😂 I love this song so much, it’s so rare to see a ‘mean girl’ character like Isabela get an opportunity to be redeemed. But it is such a healing thing for the whole family for Mirabel to help her find herself, and probably the most difficult person for her to try to empathize with. This relationship was the most actively contentious that we see but once they understand each other and Mirabel sets Isabela free from her ‘responsibility’ they are able to express genuine love for each other.

Than you for your reaction video about Encanto. I love this movie, in spite of my age (58). 🤪 Me encanta la parte que dice: "Un huracán de jacarandas" - Es un árbol "very cute" del trópico de centro y sudamerica. The same as Tabebuia. Best regards, "amiga" and congratulatios for your KZbin channel. Till next...🤗 Blessings from Spain.

Hi rissa! I love you and your reactions. Have you seen Turn It Down by OR3O? It's not a official Encanto song but a fan song about Dolores. Keep up the good work! Stay safe and do your best, love you 🤗🤗😊
