Speaking of WDTAB: Compare Isabellas refrain at 6:36 in that song (thanks for providing it here Nick!) with the beginning of Mirabel's call-and-response at 3:23. It's the same melody from both characters, disrupting the flow of the 'common consensus', if you like. Bruno truths don't have to be bad: being suboptimal doesn't have to be bad. It's like a leitmotif.

That line, "What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect. It just needed to be, and they let me be" has so much pent up anger behind it, I love this theme that neither of her sisters had ever really allowed themselves to think about how unfair all of the responsibilities and pressures put on them until Mirabel forced them to. It really goes to show that the fan theory that Mirabel didn't get a gift because her place in the family is as the new matriarch and miracle holder really holds some weight.

I also want to point out that abuela didn't really have a gift either, she was there to bring people together in difficult times, and Mirabel is doing the same thing. In the movie it seems like they were trying to make Isabela the new matriarch of the family when really it looks like the next matriarch will be Mirabel. The family underestimated and overlooked Mirabel a lot for not having a gift, and didn't see that.
@meoowrie15402 жыл бұрын
I really don't agree with the "Mirabel didn't have a gift". It was shown in the end of the movie that she brought back Casita, just like how her Abuela was given Casita. She has exactly the same gift as her Abuela which is Casita. Mirabel always wanted to serve and protect the family even as a child, and her grandma wanted to protect the family as well, and that's why both their gifts are Casita, a home for their family, where they're supposed to feel safe and protected. Also, if you look throughout the movie, Only Mirabel and Abuela interacts with Casita. The reason Mirabel didn't get a door is because she already has Casita. And Casita has no power inside the doors, so it makes sense that Mirabel didn't get a door. And that's why everyone assumes that she never received a gift. When Luisa started to doubt herself more openly and acknowledged all her insecurities, her power started to grow weak. And everytime Mirabel acknowledges her feelings of hurt, insecurity, and disappointment in herself, Casita would start to get cracks and the miracle starts to go weak. So, yeah. She has the same gift as her grandma. It's not flashy, but it's the most important one.

Hey Nick. I wanted to explain a couple things I noticed from this song First of all, I am new to your channel, I came here because I am obsessed with this movie right now and I keep watching react videos. I wanted to talk about the meaning of the plants, the ones you cannot pronounce lol. Initially most of what Isabela creates with her powers are beautiful European Roses. I find this a metaphor about western beauty canons. Once she realises she does not have to play that particular beauty canon or that role in her family/society, she starts growing autoctonous plants from Colombia, such as beautiful Jacarandas or dangerous carnivorous sundew. Strangling figs, hanging vines, tabebuia and Palma de cera are also Colombian plants. In a society where white people are only a minority, it is very difficult for most people, particularly young women, to adhere to those beauty canons, creating emotional health problems. And that is one of the messages being delivered here. The other topic I wanted to discuss is the reason this song may be particularly appealing to you: YOU ARE AN ARTIST. Isabela is also an artist who has been adhering to a particular art style she didn't really feel that attached to but it was expected of her. The moment she realises she can do beautiful things on a different style that is more her style, she gets immediately inspired. That is the other message I think this song is delivering beautifully and any artist will probably empathise. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read me typing at 2am about my current obsession.

i friggin love this analysis! I totally agree!! i cant choose who I relate to more, Luisa or Isa because I play both roles. 3:58 When Mirabel sings "You just seem like your life's been a dream since the moment you opened your eyes... All I know are the blossoms you grow" is to the same tune (just in a different key and tempo) as Isabela's part in "We Don't Talk About Bruno": "He told me that the life of my dreams would be promised and someday be mine; He told me that my power would grow like the grapes that thrive on the vine," Mirabel is mirroring Isabela's part because she finally understands her predicament as the "perfect princess" of the family and now just sees her as another sister, like Luisa, trying to live up to family expectations of her. That's also why Isabela wears purple, because it represents royalty. Once she sheds her perfect facade, she decorates her dress with her own patterns of flowers by using the brightly-colored plant spores/pollen from the plants she grows. ALSO, in "We Don't Talk About Bruno," Isabela is singing with the perfect, high-note, staccato that stereotypical Disney Princesses used to sing in. When she starts being herself in "What Else Can I Do," she lets go of that limited vocal range and she really shows how powerful and free-flowing her voice is. Syllables don't have to be perfect and bite-sized anymore. She's swingin' around on vines and kicking flower pollen everywhere, growing carnivorous and invasive plants (sundew, strangling figs, which are real plants that grow in Colombia,) instead of just, "ooh, pretty flowers." I strongly appreciate how every plant shown here is native to Colombia and is a REAL plant.

In "We Don't Talk About Bruno" everyone is complaining about the visions they were given by Bruno and then we get Isabella, who at first glance seems to be saying "I didn't get a bad vision, he told me my life would be perfect." In truth, she IS complaining--she's saying that she was told by her Tio that she would be able to be the person she wanted to be and that her power would grow beyond flowers but she thinks SHE WAS LIED TO because she's being forced to be someone she's not and she's still only growing flowers. This song is her realizing what Bruno told her before was true and she COULD be who she wanted to be and she COULD make more than just roses.
@jackriver83852 жыл бұрын
This song also shows that Bruno's visions are true, her power did grow and she did eventually get to live the life of her dreams. seems like in the "we don't talk about Bruno" song she was afraid of what that would mean, she sings "I'm fine" several times in that one, implying she is afraid of what change would mean for her, and the self discovery that will necessarily come with.

It was interesting to me to hear that most people related to Luisa since Isabela was the character (and song) I related to most. I never found myself naturally beautiful so I wouldn’t go anywhere out of the house without full face makeup, hair done perfect, usually in a dress until I felt people could look at me and think ‘she’s perfect’. It has taken me until I am 23 to try and break myself of this. I am really having to teach myself to stop listening to the outside world and feeling “ugly” when I go just to grab one thing from the store and let myself express what I think is beautiful about me. This song has actually encouraged me to kickstart this and today I went to the store in just a little makeup (baby steps) and a hat. It may not sound like much but this was my first little cactus.

I've definitely met some people who feel more pressure in the way Isabela does, but I am of the camp that relates more to Luisa. Both have compelling stories and struggles, and I think are somewhat relatable to everyone.

I have an older sister who I always thought was "the pretty one". I said something to her. She smirked and said "I have colored contacts, died hair and a padded bra" It was the best thing she could have said.

I also have an older sister who I always thought of as “little miss perfect”. The blonde, beautiful, popular, soccer star who made perfect grades and got everything. And I was only ever “her weird sister.” But after I left home, she and I actually got to talking. And turns out she was just as traumatized by her childhood as I was by mine. She wasn’t the one who cast that shadow. Our parents were. Our teachers were. Our peers were. By comparing us and making me feel bad for being different from my sister and putting that pressure on her. It wasn’t our faults.

My mom used to call my 2 year younger sister "the pretty one" and me "the smart one" (for some reason the younger 3 were left out of this). As the oldest of 5 I was always pressured to be perfect, to behave the best, to take care of the younger ones, to get straight A's, to be the kid that other parents would turn to their children and say, why can't you be more like her? Then I was criticized for not being social enough. not having enough friends but I just didn't have time. "The pretty one" was just expected to be pretty and social. I feel both Luisa and Isabela's songs on a deep level.

I loved the sister relationship development. How they all were dealing with their own set of problems separately and how with Mirabel they opened up and not only did she not shame them, she encouraged them. Like when Isa sings Mirabel just cheers her on. Go! Grow. Clear out the way. Just I feel these 3 would have had such a blast growing up together without all of those unnecessary responsibilities and constraints laid onto them.

As someone who has been singing for years but is still learning, i can tell that everyone in this movie is incredible. this song is amazing. at first she’s singing with the typical soft and pretty princess voice, but throughout this song, she lets her real, unique, and incredible voice shine through. also, that high note at the end… she full on belted that. she’s incredible

I feel I can relate to all the sisters with me being thr oldest girl. When something needs doing I have to be strong. When I want to socialize I feel I have to be perfect , but most of the time I feel akward and usless. I watched the movie by myself the first time and I cried with how relatable it was. This is a very beautifully done movie and I reccomend you watch it. 💜

the part that mirabel sings “don’t you feel like your life’s been a dream since the moment you opened your eyes” is as sort of reprise to isabella’s “he told me that the life of my dreams would be promised and someday be mine” in we don’t talk about bruno

I relate to Isabella so much and im 12, with this song I cried because it reminded me about myself and I was able to push through to so much more even with my young age. Everyone called me Perfect but I was actually dealing with some pretty hard stuff and having pressure on myself, when my dad got cancer I really found myself even though everyone said “thats wrong” or “what happened to you” no one liked it when I learned to speak my mind including my sisters but I didnt care and Isabella is 100 % my fav character in the movie

As an artist, this song really gets to that part of me that struggles with either making something that I want to, or something aesthetic or pleasing that I know others will appreciate/enjoy/pay for. especially the line about "just needing to be." I'm glad other creators are feeling the same attachment to the song. I love that they had Mirabel encourage her sister to be herself as soon as she knew the truth!

Yes, full movie please :') Also, this is one of my favorites personally because she surprised me the most when it came to who she is as a character after she lets go. It's a very uplifting song to the point where you want to cry because of the positivity in the message? It's already hinted that she isn't truly happy in previous scenes, but it's subtle enough that you completely miss it until you know to look for it. During 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' where everyone is singing together her part turns from a refrain of her verse to "I'm fine, I'm fine, I'll be fine."

You nailed everyone's obsession with this movie perfectly: we all want more of each character. Like the MCU, they could easily create a Madrigal Family Universe to go on for years and years to come, delivering what we want. (Especially now that Disney's got some well-deserved OK Groomer backlash going on; the Madrigal's could save them.)

Every song in this movie is magical and awesome but there's something in this one that brings it on the whole new level. It gets me to dance (and trust I'm really not much of a dancer) and happy cry every time I hear it. The visuals during the scene makes everything even better. I'm so glad you enjoyed this. This song still emotionally hits me harder than any of the others, personally. When you come from a family that expects perfection in all things it can be soul crushing. I’m so glad Disney is starting to include these types of meanings into their movies and songs the least few years, it’s going to affect so many young kids in a powerful way that i wish i had at that age

This movie is all about Columbia. This particular song is a style of rock popular in Columbia in the 90s. If this were a comic book, Luisa and Isabella would make a very powerful team. If you want really great lyrics, check out Surface Pressure from this same movie. I'm pretty sure it made every older sister cry.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! You notice that in we don’t talk about Bruno she’s singing like a Disney princess. Light and airy-kind of quiet. And you can listen to the background music. But in this song she’s singing with her fullest voice, her facial expressions are more…well…expressive, and the music and even art style is more colorful and happy. It’s just so good.

A lot of the lyrics and music in Encanto make me emotional because I understand the meaning and there's nostalgia in the music for me. My relationship with Disney has been severed years ago but I still can agree that Disney movies are for everyone, not just kids. Encanto is the first Disney movie I watch in years because the trailers alone captured my attention. I felt this wasn't going to be a callous, superficial and frivolous movie and I wasn't wrong. Also another reason I got to watch the movie is because Diane Guerrero was voicing a character (Isabela no less) and I thank Lin for having her sing. She has such a beautiful voice!

LMM wasn’t the director, but his songs drove the direction of the story so well, that he was given script writing credit. Fun fact, he chose Bruno’s name for the rhyme. The character’s original name was Oscar.

I heard someone else say that Luisa's merch is selling out more than ANY OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS, and I think a lyric in _this_ song perfectly encapsulates why. "I'm so sick of pretty, I want something true." Don't get me wrong now, Luisa is so badass and gorgeous. But she's NOT conventionally pretty in proportion or function. But her song carries the most _hard truth_ of any of them. THAT'S why Luisa's merch is selling out more than anyone else's.

In "We don't talk about Bruno" she said that he told her that her powers will grow, and the life of her dream will be hers someday. And in this song, she developed her powers creating something new (not only roses and flowers) as Bruno said "saw" to her. Details... 😊

The first time you see Isa,you will love how elegant she is,all movements just like dancing,but hate her attitude to underestimate her younger sister.yearning her graceful but jealous at the same time.But when the story go on,you will find she is not happy .She didn't hate beautiful,but she wants to do what she wants too. It's just too real like everyone want to be ourselves. Ps. Love your reaction,so emotional❤

This is why Encanto is the only Disney movie I've actually liked in a long while. It operates like an actual musical: advancing the plot, having character development happen through a single song, letting the musical numbers exist on their own unrealistic narrative level etc.

What I love most about this song is that you realize that in her part of "We don't talk about Bruno" she is sharing her 'bad' prophecy as well. Initially you think she is bragging but she is miserable in her pretty, perfect life.
@jaronbranham4812 жыл бұрын
The depth you read into the songs and relatability is carried over throughout the whole movie; the struggles of the family are a fantastical but relatable story that countless people have and still struggle with presented in a way that kids can enjoy without getting lost. The stories told for each character is great though you wish they gave some screen time to some of the supporting characters but the development on the characters that did get the screen time is so perfectly done- it's hard to complain other than "I want more".

When you said "but I'm 26...and I feel like crying!" I'm 22 and I literally started bawling when Isabela said the lines "What could I do if I just knew it didnt need to be perfect, it just needed to be. And they let me be" and then I didn't stop until the video ended
@andresomerville48962 жыл бұрын
The future is not what Isabella expected. That line in, "we don't talk about Bruno" subverts expectations because the audience thinks her life is perfect so the prophecy must have been fulfilled for her already. But, the life of her dreams was not the perfect life Abuela planed for her. It's only when her power grows in unexpected and imperfect ways that she starts to have the life she always wanted.

I think the most evocative line in this song is Isabella's "What else? WHAT ELSE?" It's not the line itself, but the emotion you can hear in her voice. For the first time Isabella is letting herself dare to do what she wants, and she wants to do it all. She's living life to the fullest for the full time, and the eagerness in her voice shows how much she's just wanted to be herself for so long.

I’m of the opinion that imperfection is what makes something beautiful. You don’t look at a cone and say “that is beautiful”, but you do look at a mountain, with all of its uneven faces, random angles, bare patches, cracks, loose rocks and mismatched geometry and say it’s beautiful.
