It's because there's enemy/projectile spam rather than a mix of avoiding enemies and platforming. The main problem I see with most of the gameplay is that enemies DO NOT DESPAWN so when they backlog (which is quite often unless you stop and kill every mob before moving forward) which means that there's a lot of repetitive stop-and-go gameplay. If they had either a maximum cap for mobs on-screen or had they coded the mobs to despawn when off-screen then I bet people would've enjoyed this game much more.

It's because none of this is actual gameplay. There was never a beta of the game that they showed off here, instead this was all animated manually to show off the premise for the game. Easiest way to tell is with the flying section at 1:04, you'd never be able to move like that with a joystick in an actual game (and even if you were controlling it with a mouse for some reason that's still unnaturally smooth).

I bet the trailer was made in the animation program and the assets hadn't actually been implemented into Unreal Engine yet. For example, there's a smooth transition at the beginning of the Cerberus fight instead of an abrupt loading screen, and during the flying/swimming sections, you can see the player characters being smoothly tweened around the screen as if they're being controlled by keyframes instead of actual players.

People are being really unfair with the whole "rip-off" thing. They are completely upfront about the Cuphead inspiration on the Kickstarter page: "Enchanted Portals is our very first game, we are both avid Cuphead fans and our idea was to make a game heavily inspired by it, not to attack it or compete with it, but to celebrate it and because we’d love to see more Cuphead-like games out there. We’ve put all our love and care into this project, and it comes from a place of respect and admiration for the original. We hope to bring our own spin to the formula, making Enchanted Portals a unique and charming experience, one that people all over can appreciate." I guess it's too much to ask that people read. It's supposed to be their take on Cuphead. Why not? It's not like the market's flooded with Cuphead-style run 'n gun games and these trailers have been promising so far. Wish the developers the best.

Nothing wrong with this at all. The developers have been up front about their inspiration taken from Cuphead. It doesn’t mean this is a shameless cash grab. Animation is demanding, tiring and meticulous work and they’ve clearly put a lot of their own creativity, love and care into creating something similar, but different. People like the golden age of cartoons. People like platformers. People like Cuphead. Why should they be discouraged for delivering more content to a genre that is in high demand. Just because they aren’t the first to do it? That’s foolishness. Also, it’s only two people working on this! I say god speed. Hope it works out well for them.

Looink No it wasn’t all of the backgrounds were made by Caitlin Russle, the animation was split up between Jake Clark, Chad Moldenhauer, Tina Nawrocki, Joseph Coleman, Dee Johnson, Hanna Abi-Hanna (yes that’s his real name), Thomas Smolenski, and Danielle Johnson with more hopefully on the way. The styrofoam models used in some backgrounds were done by Ali Morbi not even counting the game programmers, the font specialist , and one ink and clean up person (*GASP*) can you see its not just 3 people. Even though I absolutely adore Cuphead as it’s my favorite game of all time this type of Animation takes so much effort from only 2 people just wanting to make a fan game, can you please just give them a break

Look most bosses are unique but some like the cow boss wich is a copy of junk yard jive and the devil boss. The games art stile looks ok but isnt as good as cupheads. Because the game have a much smaller development budget than Cuphead and was entirely done by two people. It failed both of it's Kickstarter attempt and was funded by some external investor(s) which I guess didn't give it much of a budget nor time to begin with. Cuphead in comparison was eventually funded by Microsoft who gave the developer a huge paycheck for it's development and making it a limited exclusive on Microsoft own platform. Not to mention a lot of the art and animation work of Cuphead was done by some of the best people in the animation industry, whom was hired to extensively hand draw every animation in the game frame by frame which was an incredibly tedious and time consuming work to as it is.

I just love how often the map and the enemies interact with the characters. It's like when a boy gets inked, he turns black and glitters, as if he had really been dipped in ink. Or when a girl was crushed by a stump and she began to walk flat. And when the cosmo cow made them both dance and they actually danced. And that's not even all the interactions I saw in the trailer. I'm sure in the Cuphead they would have just taken damage instead and that's it. Of course, these are not all the advantages of this project that I noticed in the trailers, but I just decided to point out just such little things, because thanks to such little things you can see how much love and effort the developers put into the game. This is not some kind of parody. This is a standalone project inspired by another game.

This game doesn't deserve the hate it receives. They made it clear that they want to see more cuphead-esque games out there, and they made it even more clear that this game is inspired from Cuphead. It's this and the game seems to have it owns twists and original obstacles and bosses as well, not just a straight up terrible Cuphead ripoff. Alongside that, Cuphead did not invent it's artstyle, it's inspired from old cartoons in itself. Overall not quite sure why so many people are complaining.

@@extrezYou know. If it would be inspiration the weapons would be unique. What I got from the trailer is that these are the same weapons with different textures. It uses the same mechanics. The dash animation is 100% the same. The swimming levels are obvious "inspiration" from the flying levels. Besides the bosses this is the only change they made. I think its obvious. 🙂 PS: okay watched the trailer again. There is flying as well. Swimming is a new addition amd grabbing onto vines. Thats it. The cow boss works like the giant miniboss at the end of a run and gun level. The cow boss has a phase shown in the trailer very much like the devils 1st phase. If you cant see after this that its an obvious rip-off then I dont know what to say.

I’ve actually spoken with the team behind the game. First of all, these folks are VERY kind and approachable to fans and address ALL feedback. I would NOT say it’s totally identical to Cuphead. I love the sorcerer theme, the eccentricities, the VERY detailed backgrounds, ALL characters’ adorable designs. In other words, you can clearly see it wasn’t just slapped together. The team would probably consider me among their most loyal fans. I’ve made them a piece of fan art and even a COSPLAY suggestion for that female main character. I’ve reassured them they are JUST FINE for having inspirations. In fact, they’re so savvy on this genre that even the recognizable aspects appear fresh and novel. Game staff, kudos once again, and keep up the beautiful material ❤️❤️❤️❤️

The quality of the work is high for sure, but the originality that they do add does not do it any favors in assuaging the criticisms given.. Inspirations are taking bits and pieces of something to make it your own. For example Sonic's character design takes inspiration from the same old rubber-hose aesthetic that Cuphead and Enchanted Portals does with its gloves on character's hands. However, it is still a completely original creation despite that. This however is more like Cuphead with a bit of dashes of "wizards and portals" here and "wacky bosses" there, than it is a simply something that was only in small part inspired by Cuphead. The things people have been saying about the game don't mean to dismiss it entirely and ignore what it does well, and ignore the things Enchanted Portals does that are indeed original, but people wouldn't be saying this about the game if it and Cuphead weren't so closely aligned in so many ways.

It is good to see the plans for the game is still ongoing. It seems ridiculous to think that we live in an age where we see tends like “hero shooters” or “Battle Royale” be a dime a dozen but apparently one “animated side scroller” is apparently where lines get crossed. Comparing this game to Cuphead would be like saying Street Fighter and King of Fighters are the exact same game. Yeah there are similarities, but it isn’t like we see the exact same enemies. But I guess they are fighting frogs and a ship, so close enough... Honestly, it will be great to see the final product and then see how it stacks up. Hopefully it could be a start of the “animated side scroller” genre and we can have contra-like games that are better than what Konami can produce.

Agreed, i have to be honest and say i was pretty skeptical at first when i heard about it. But when i learned that the developers were fans of Cuphead and wanted to make something similar as a homage and from the heart, i started to show more appreciation for the game. And some of the bosses look really fun and creative! As someone who has Asperger's and loves to draw cartoons, i see both Cuphead and Enchanted Portals as good inspiration for people who likes to draw cartoony characters in a similar way. Or atleast in my opinion.

This is not a Cuphead Ripoff and to prove it: Each boss is more modern than it is of 1930s retrospect, like how you have the Halloween area and the space and even a modern house. 0:59 and 1:24 You have a lot of different damage animations compared to Cuphead where they use the same 'Oh! I've been hit!' animation 1:01 The music isn't as jazzy as it is in Cuphead. Like the Beethoven boss where you don't hear like the many saxophones and jazz instruments Cuphead usually had and in the space cow boss, they actually use more techno sounding instruments. 1:06 They actually did a lot of work on the background like holy sh*t, do you see the amount of detail in the background? For Cuphead, they usually replayed the same background in the plane levels over and over again. 1:26 We can finally shield ourselves from these attacks 1:29 They're legit underwater. Cuphead never had an underwater level before! There also doesn't seem to be a Parry system which was a big part of Cuphead And most importantly, while Cuphead was more based on older cartoons, this was based on more modern cartoons, which you can tell based on the cleaner art style All in all, I'm looking forward to this game! And it should really stop being known as a ripoff when it's not really being ripped off in the first place. It's only a ripoff if they use the same stories and/or use similar characters, which this game doesn't do. It has its own story, its own character, the only thing even close to Cuphead is the gameplay but you don't see people complaining that Marvel ripped off DC or how Marvel vs. Capcom ripped off Mortal Kombat. Cuphead doesn't own the cartoon run n gun style. If anything, Cuphead brought the cartoon run n gun style to light and Enchanted Portal was basically adding to this new genre of games.

To everyone who still thinks this is a cuphead ripoff:This is not a ripoff, it has similar mechanics but it looks like the story is completely different. The art in Enchanted Portals is different from the art in Cuphead. The bosses are all different. I don't remember a modern day Cerberus in Cuphead, or a princess who turns into a frog in Cuphead. If people like you keep feeding others bullcrap like this then their not going to see for themselves. I'm also gonna add this, You can make different games with similar story and mechanics. That doesn't make it a ripoff. If that were the case then why aren't people freaking out about Borderlands being a ripoff of COD? There are so many FPS games but that doesn't mean they're copying. They have other stuff in it like a shield and a different revive mechanic. The different revive mechanic is if you get hit multiple times. You will hide in your hat as you can still jump and run a bit faster but can't shoot as if damaged one more time u will die.I guess this mechanic is better for the one player and worse to the two players compare to Cuphead revive mechanics. Just to be clear I think the one player will still do a large amount of damage. If u don't get hit in a short amount of time you will go back to the shooting form. The shield mechanic idk, but I think you kind of like smash but the shield cannot recharge. Of course it's a Cuphead inspire game but it does have different mechanic you look closely.(This is a message to people who think this is a Cuphead ripoff)

Yesssssss. It's not dead. Honestly one of my most anticipated games right now (even if it will probably take several years). You just see the love put into this game (if your not bias and crying over similarities while playing your 8th "souls ike" game or your 20th "actually blant and generic first-person shooter" (which are both okay because they have their own genre.
