This is one of my favorite movies of all time. That and Bio dome!

I feel like they used Jim Carrey in the same way as Pauly Shore for a while; he got famous for doing a bit, and was hired to do that bit over and over again, just within the context of whatever character he was hired to play (not that he didn't display some chops when it was called for). The difference was that Jim eventually did get a shot to do some serious acting in some bigger films.

I think it's a little different with Jim because his bit was significantly less specific than Pauly's, and because even in those earlier films where Jim is being zany and a huge character, he's not ALWAYS that guy. Take "The Mask," he's crazy and very "Jim Carrey" when he's in the mask, but when he's just Stanley Ipkiss(?) he's a normal guy, acting normal. Pauly Shore's "Weasel" personality is just him all the time, in all his early films. He delivers lines the exact same way. He is playing the exact same guy (just with a different character name). If you look at Jim's characters in "Ace Ventura," "The Mask," and "Dumb and Dumber," I think each of them are unique to their own films. -Ev

@TheBluffCouncil I completely agree, definitely not a complete linear comparison by any stretch of the imagination; the similarity in my mind wasn't as specific, just kind of a slight resemblance. The two situations definitely aren't twins or even brothers; Jim's situation is like Pauly's situation's 3rd step-cousin twice removed, lol.

It's a misfit, underdog story with some 80s what it means to be cool, undertones. I saw it a few years later because I was born in 86' so it was probably 95 or after when I saw it, he was very relatable in a kid's mind. Not unlike Marty McFly or other characters of the time. Can't Buy Me Love had a similar character you could hate on but that's kinda the way it was then I think. Toy Soldiers was a great movie. My babysitter let us borrow that one. I loved that one. Jennifer was her name.

Guys your over thinking a early 90's comedy, while I agree with what you said about Dave, the movie itself it a dumb fun comedy. I love the movie for nostalgia and the vibe I don't unpack it like this.

"Overthinking Early 90's Comedies" would have been a great alternate title for our show 😂 Yeah, it's all in good fun, we find it entertaining to revisit movies we enjoyed as kids and take them in through our now decrepit, 40-year-old perspectives.

I liked Encino Man at the time--because I was 12 years old when it came out.
