Enclosed Central Power with one Oil Well and Dead Man Offset Weight

1929 Central Power with Enclosed Gear Box. When originally installed this system operated several oil well pump jacks. The power was located in the middle of the group of wells and all were controlled from this central point. At the time this video was made there was only one pump jack connected and one offset weight commonly called a "Dead Man" to counter balance the system.

Unfortunately this system was scrapped out and the pump jack was replaced with an electric unit.

Amazing that the bearings on that wobbly drive shaft could last for so many decades. Try that with bearings you can buy today that are made in China and you would need to replace them once a year.

50 yrs ago you used to see there all over rural PA. I used to hear the pump sheds working all the time while hunting. They operated multiple pump jacks. They would have had a structure built around them to protect from the weather. Being a "pumper" was a real job. I still recall the distinct smell of crude oil. But, they are no more. Probably all shut down by the EPA.
