Hell yeah hes back! This is a lot to ask but would be a great idea for a video series in the future. Take 1 sub, 1 amp, and 1 car or room. Model several enclosures for it, one ported tuned to 30, one 4th order, one 6th order, one 8th order, one tapped horn, and whatever other crazy tapered port design you can think of. This way we can get a general idea of what each box does, and which has the best bandwidth and output for the size, least compromise, etc..

It was 4 15" in a 4th order bandpass. He made the box around the club so that in the VIP room it was quieter and you could hear each other talk. Your chat today just reminded me of this. I hope you get some cool big projects in the future, ones that you really just love. Because once we start doing the things we love, what we love about those things change's and get more complicated. I’ve been watching Hexi’s work way back when he had a shed/workshop in what looked like either New Mexico/Arizona and he had finished his own design software for his engineering. Quite impressive. Over the years I have had quite a few designs done by him back in his PWK days. His work has influenced a ton of us... changing how we think and approach enclosure design.... sometimes a vehicle will best benefit from a simple box design and not something really complex even though we tend to want that. He has always been strong enough to hold his ground on this. Nonetheless I come back and watch his vids over and over as I learn something new.. especially as I learn or get interested in a different focus area that I didn’t in the past. Certain videos cover certain topics but I wasn’t interested... but then that changes and I can go back and see what he taught now that it’s a focus. What Nelson Pass is to high end amplifier design in his era... Hexi is our audio engineering genius of our era not just with enclosure design but audio overall.

I've got a pile of Mach proaudio speakers (they were made by Martin lighting) but I'm lite on subs and it would be nice to have some very high output 12" subs to go with some of the smaller top cabinets. I've got several 18" subs....but those are so heavy and don't need the big stuff for everything. It would be nice to have some lighter subs to take to corporate events when I just need a little low end to go with my 8" top cabinets.

Secondly I have a question, maybe over simplified, about front speakers in home theatre, does it make a difference if the speakers are placed behind the screen, and would you say a perforated screen would make a difference to sound transmission. I can’t get a clear answer on this?
@jaywyatt46634 жыл бұрын
Depends on the screen (micro/mini/standard perf) but the screen can roll off your HF a lot. Almost zero effect below 2kHz though. Woven screens are super expensive but can mitigate this. There are a lot of AES papers on this behavior for characterizing cinema acoustics.

@jayweb7025 жыл бұрын
So yeah basically all car audio systems inevitably end up becoming a band pass enclosure once you roll the windows down since the open windows create another vent in the system. This is why the bass is instantly enhanced when doing so. My question would be then, is it possible to design a sub enclosure that would take advantage of the windows being down? And also, could a sub enclosure be designed to have no difference between the windows being down or up?

My system runs better with windows up. This is the first one I have ever had if I roll any window or open any door I lose with my window probably 1 dB and door open I am. When I first got into audio 25 years ago I had a Kenwood hime stereo with two huge 3way floor speakers with 12” drivers. It would shake the hiuse!! But I noticed if you stand in the corners it would ramp up the bass on the corners in my bedroom. But at most of the listening areas the bass was flat. You could walk into any other room in the house and bass was violent. I had my room fixed up real crazy looking. I’ve always been a artist at mind even as a 13 year old. I had black walls and ceiling with lime green splatter painted walls. Hard wood floor with a black area rug. And 💿 cd’s had just came not long before this and I had tons of cd’s for this Kenwoods 20 disk changer. I had got a pack of 100 blank cd’s for burning. And I hung them all from my ceiling with fishing string from 10/13/and 16 inches all over. I had black lights lining the walls. A futon couch / bed. And the giant black on black Kenwood home systems. So I told all that so this part would make sense I guess. After the bass was flat mostly at the futon couch. I pleased both 3way floor speakers on their backs, and slid them under my futon facing up letting them hit against hit. It came with 4 surround sound speakers and one center surround speaker that all had 4” speakers on the. So even tho placing my floor towers under the futon did kill some of the highs from the horns. The surround speakers made up for it. But this added very heavy bass all over the room. And it shook the futon very bad which was cool. I had one of the coolest bedrooms as teenager. And it was 135+db bedroom at that. If I hadn’t got married my whole house would be designed that way now lol. I am in the process of building a home system tho. I just picked up a 90s pioneer power head unit at a yard sale. I’ve ordered my 3way crossovers to build my subs with. I’ve orders 2 goldwood 15” drivers. I’ve got to order the 3” and horns / 1” and port tubes. Than build the boxes. I’m using half inch birch for the boxes and stand for the head unit. Can’t wait to have it finished to see how these 15 inch goldwoods sound.

We could not get the speakers to sound right in the door. I always had to put them on the outside of the panel. And use the gaping holes and between as a Box. There was a lot of fabrication to at least make it look well. But they sounded 50% More better. And had to do the same thing in the back Deck to get more improvement out of the speaker. So your designs gave me an idea. To do the same thing behind the panels of the doors. The back window might be a little tougher. This is going to be a task. So how can The computer software that you use can help me out.

Regardless of enclosure and build materials, they should sound and act the same? Or do driver materials play a bigger role?
@eatngoodtv5 жыл бұрын
Concerning mids and highs, a car driver is designed for flat off axis response. Home drivers are designed for flat on axis response. This translates into a midrange heavy speaker system using automotive components as they are expected to be mounted in doors, usually never aiming at listeners ears.

I was wondering about putting a t-line with two 12 inch subwoofers in a Toyota 4 runner I haven’t did any figuring to see if there’s enough room. The reason why I’ve read a good bit and it seems it’s better than 6th order I had that in mind also I’m going for quality of sound but still expect to be noticed a block or two away! I just wanted to be different and easy but it seems the figuring of the 6th order is pretty unforgiving take in mind also I have seen others posting that t-line is better overall and that those band pass boxes don’t work as well as the subwoofer ages! I kinda need an expert opinion I’m 47 and have been playing with audio from around 8-9 years of age my father gave some old car radios a 12 volt car battery and bunch of old speakers so I’m not real good on all the math but as far as putting it together no problem and I’ve put a few system in cars and trucks but I was always old school closed box no ports but I’m seeing what they got going on ported now days and how far it’s came over the past twenty years it’s amazing and cost for quality has dropped a great deal I remember paying 5-10$ a watt for a real good clean efficient amplifier now it like a dollar or two per watt on kinda the same thing back then if you had a 1000 watts you were king most time it took around 3-4 amps to have that now days 1000 watts ain’t nothing! Thanks if you have any advice about what to do I like you posts and all the great information you share I just learned about thiele small parameters wow and have studying about port volicity it’s a lot to take in when you didn’t have to take algebra or trig when I went to school so I’m really overwhelmed appreciate your help !

Love the informative video, but can you go more in depth with what way one would preferably build a home enclosure as apposed to a car enclosure (& vise versa) going into even unrealistic solutions if they include cutting into another wall or utilising the whole trunk for the sake is being able to better understand why one method works in one place but not the other even if the builder is only looking for a solution for one not both. If it's more apples to apples compare it to maybe a wagon or SUV cargo van even if it helps us to better understand, but so far my takeaway has been a smaller area such as an automobile will have more bass the larger in size it is, but better response to higher frequencies the smaller the area. And for home audio my takeaway is to place the woofer/speaker in kind of in a non uniform way such as if the room is 13'×17' by 9' high the sound sources center (assuming it's a singular point radiation out as a spherical radio) should positioned 6'×8' from the corner & 4' off the ground so the sound waves travel 12' vs 14' in one direction 16' vs 18' clocked 90° to that and 8' vs 10' in the hight directions so that off of every wall the sound comes back together at different times for the least interference conceptually if listener is positioned at the sound source as well (assumed location for easy brainstorming). Maybe the best results would be a 3:5 placement in one direction 7:9 in the other and 11:13 in the hight directions, in let's assume a cube shaped room for easy understanding if my train of thought is correct in that such numbers would create the least frequency interference (constructive or destructive) am I correct in thinking this way with regards to preserving as many frequencies as possible in an empty volume of space?
