Sorry I'm commenting as I watch. I personally never feel bad using a test tube, just because it's similar to what the queen would dig out to start laying eggs. But some types of carpenter ants they say to keep in a tube for a year or two until there's at least 30- 50 workers, it's a little long imho. But that my friend is nice, and I find it extremely worth it. Especially being magnetic. If any of you guys are new to ant keeping and see this comment, I'm telling you from experience, this looks pretty handy. Unless you have a place to put all the test tubes where they won't roll it's a pain in the butt, and when the queen does lay eggs you don't want them rolling all over. Another thing that is a pain in the ass is having to rehydrate a test tube full of ants with a syringe. Even more of a pain if you forgot to take into account how far back you pushed the cotton compared to the length of the needle. I've been keeping ants for years brother. You are very smart for not starting out with bullet ants. 😂 But yea, check out the carpenter and setup I carved with a drill. It took me 5 hours.

In May my daughter happened to have a large Camponotus japonicus crawling on her bed. I put it in a tube and luckily she laid some viavlble eggs. Technically you are supposed to leave her in the tube for a long time, but I ended up using a drill and carved a really nice setup for them. I figured I'll set the test tube in their and if they don't like it they'll stay in the tube. They ended up moving her in after about a little over an hour. If you can check it out Scott I would really appreciate any pointers any ant keepers may have. Ifvyou go on my channel and click vides, it's one of the most resent ones.

@@ScottsInverts my maculatus has only just moved into her founding nest through the night lol, my harps started getting mites so iv isolated them, went through each larvae and pupae making sure no mites and washed their nest out, hopefully they will be fine!

Great video you’d want to keep water in the little dish thing as they need access to water all the time and in a tiny nest like that they only need a tiny drop of snaps

I do like these reallt good value for the money was going to buy but the feeding out world to dark can't see the ants when feeding etc they need to do the feeding section lighter.
@ScottsInverts2 ай бұрын
Might be so the ants feel safer while feeding maybe ?
@NorthernAnts242 ай бұрын
Best thing to do in these occasions is when you feed your ants pre killed bug protein, place the bug on some tinfoil and then place that into the outworld, its more visible and the best thing is the cleaning up after them is easier, you can take the foil out with no dirty marks or anything on your outworlds floor 👍🏻
@matako892 ай бұрын
@NorthernAnts24 I have feeding trays for all my ants easy to clean and keeps the rest of the out world clean, it's not being able to see the ants in that area when taking off the lid when feeding ? But when the out world is white it's easy to see where the ants are to prevent escapes as its easy for them to blend into dark colours as most ants are dark, they are stunning nests there should be colour options for out world feeding areas.
@NorthernAnts242 ай бұрын
@@matako89 ah well there ya go then feeding trays are better again! what species do you keep? yeah i also prefer white myself too, maybe they are black to help with keeping them comfortable during the founding stage i duno.
@matako892 ай бұрын
@NorthernAnts24 true it probably is to keep them more comfortable, I like my micro ant colonies, at the moment I've got Acanthomyrmex thailandensis. Temnothorax luteus. Temnothorax unfasciatus. Temnothorax recedens. Temnothorax crassispinas. Temnothorax nylanderi X 2. Leptothorax acervorum. Ponera coarctata. Lasius flavus Lasius Niger x 3. This is why I need white feeding areas my ants are small in size and small in colony size, the foundling nest would make a permanent home for most of what I have.

I suspect they are neodymium magnets which are the strongest type of commercially available magnet. I manufacture them for a living. The main downside is if the nickel plating scrapes off they rust easily.
