Wow those ants *are* actually really smart. I saw them moving the sand in the tube to make room for the fly and thought that was pretty cool, but not insane. And then the ants decided to store their seeds in a dry place so they didnt mold or grow and my mind is blown.

You can also put the cotton inside of the sugarwater tube and put the tube in the arena or connect it to the arena. Also messor barbarus colonies get quite big fast so in a year or so you will probably need to upgrade your setup, just a little info i did not know as i got a colony of them.

Thanks for the info! I got the bigger nest ready and I will get them a bigger arena when needed
@mike8877665544332211 Жыл бұрын
@@HomemadeEcosystems i had a similar arena for mine and i expandet it with a bigger one after a year. The nest looks better than mine, i had mine in a 20x20x1cm upright glass nest which was not so optimal, they removed all of the sand and it was at one point only the ant colony filling it up 😄

The harvester ants were initially wary of the competent stone placement in the arena. They may be able to drag a dead mosquito into a sandy test tube, but could any or all of them situate a stone with such precision and verve. This is what separates humans from the insect world. That and our absence of mandibles.
@HomemadeEcosystems Жыл бұрын

it is best not to cover the colony so that it is dark in the tube because it is very difficult for ants to go from dark to light or from light to dark. for example, if you want to look at the ants and you remove the covering from the tube so that it suddenly becomes very light, they get a lot of stress
