Viking was a profession. You would "go viking" or "come as viking" to other countries, just as you could come as a merchant or go exploring. As a swede it really annoys me when people think that Viking age Scandinavia was just a whole regions of bearded men in chainmail wielding large axes and killing people. They were first and foremost farmers, artisans and merchants, just like everywhere else
@RA-lh9uh7 жыл бұрын
vikings were warriors who traveled traveled the world fighting and trading. others were farmers and did not raid and were not called vikings but norsemen. so viking means warrior. it can be from danmark sweden finland normway iceland greenland.... they came all the way to turkish empire so the were real bad ass fighters
@GnosticAtheist7 жыл бұрын
The correct term is viking era norseman or simply dane depending on situation (as dane meant more than just someone from Denmark) but it is shortened to viking in popular usage. Its not really that much of a problem as most people know we are talking about Scandinavians in the period vikingr was common.

Loki Sigurdsson keeping alive the old traditions is one thing. But going this extreme is another. I have Nordic blood in me. And i keep traditions alive. But I don't walk around like this guy does. You can keep old traditions in a modern way.
@colbyhartke7 жыл бұрын
Loki Sigurdsson that's one thing and I get it. And if he is amongst those that do that. Then I retract my comment and apologize for my agression. Just being a nord myself I tend to get apprehensive of others whom claim to know our history and the ways our ancestors lived and all when in reality they dont

I literally grew up partly in a family that were living viking styled (I'm Swedish), they had a garden in the country side, the mother made her own viking clothes, she made her own carpets from animal skin and shit... She made tents, fences etc of wood and drew viking art on walls hehe, she and I also used to write letters for each other using runes (in Sweden you are taught runes, but most people forget them after learning, but I still remember up until today and I was taught runes 10 years ago haha) ...Yeah it was an experience haha xD But I don't think that life style suits me too well :) She seems to be at home with it though

I imagine wearing the full coat and original clothes is the equivalent to wearing lederhosen if your trying to represent old Switzerland, do you need the full get up to be a viking or can you just have the jewelry (most specifically a god amulet) and follow the ways and traditions and call yourself a viking? Essentially is it ok to do everything exempt wear the clothes? Wouldn't mind having a getup like that it's just I think it'd be pretty hard to find something like that in vinland.
