I do not get why this video is titled the way it is... All around their gear is around 40Lb. That sounds like a lot, but it is distributed pretty evenly, so it will add very little fatigue to any one area.
@EGCblackknight11 жыл бұрын
My experiance with maille is that even with a belt it still sits very heavily on the shoulders and moves alot when you do, throwing off your balance a little. Add to that the sword and shield which aren't heavy until you've been holding and moving them for an extended period. All the little things add up and carrying that extra weight I've found does sap the strength pretty fast, if you are not accustomed to it.
@danmartin455211 жыл бұрын
Yeah I do get that. My summer job involves extensive trailblazing around the 100 mile wilderness of Maine (USA). My load out consist of about 5Lb of blades (Machete, ax, large field knife, and smaller utility fixed blade), a large chain saw when I am unlucky, and maybe even a 3ish pound scythe. When I am using a chain saw I wear Kevlar chaps that are 5ish or so pounds. On top of those I wear light plate armor that I made over my lower legs to help deflect a machete or ax hit. I generally will have a harness over my upper body to help carry gear and maybe use rope. Also I will have a bag with water, rope, tools, what ever I may need. All in all it is about 30 pounds of gear when I get out of my car, or boat, and I may do a mile or more of walking. When I set up a little area to work from when I get there, I will end up with about 10-20 Lb of gear on me when moving through the brush. All in all what makes me tired is my 1.5 Lb machete with a 10+ inch balance point, and that scythe when it is needed. I can see it as over whelming to someone who is not used to it. It is even hard for me the first week I start up every year. But after a while I feel it just becomes a part of the normal.

Modern infantry carries over 60 lbs, about as much as a full set of plate armor. Vikings had it relatively easy.
@MrKbonez11 жыл бұрын
100nitrog yes, 60lbs of padded straps, nice cotton fabrics, ergonomic design. medieval equipment is very rough in comparison, so i would say that the modern infantry has it much easier. plus the vikings didnt have the ability to sue for compensation after a battlefield injury, or being bullied during training, like today's pussies
@danmartin455211 жыл бұрын
MrKbonez O go and quite your complaining. Carrying 60 Lb of gear in a hot dry clement, under constant threat of being shot, is no easy task. Being bullied in training, or sue for injury? Soldiers have a hard enough time getting medical coverage in a timely manner after injury. Have you ever been in the arm forces? How many family members of yours are in? You seem to not know much because any one familiar with military gear knows that they use Kevlar over Cotton mostly. I do not agree with the politics that lead these seemingly pointless wars, but cut the poor pawns some slack.

There's actually some debate as to whether or not vikings wore padding under their armour. Common sense would suggest they did since cloth armour was already a thing, but unlike other types of armour mention of it is curiously absent in the sagas. So it's possible - however stupid it would be - that they just wore the mail over their normal clothes without any padding underneath.
@flinfake4 жыл бұрын
@@NoeLPZC They had furs and cloaks. Not as good as padded armor, but that is three loose layers of thickish, and relatively sturdy, material. I've handled animals and even modern clothing is a lot better at protecting from bites and scratches than many people would assume. An old school flax tunic, then chains and furs, then cloak would be pretty difficult to cut through and not too bad as a shock absorber. It is also important to remember that most fighting involved much shallower and less impactful wounds than most people would think. People weren't being spitted on spears or having their heads caved in by maces for the most part. It was mostly getting a few inches in the abdomen or getting clipped hard enough to crack the skull that put you out. So Vikings weren't equipped too poorly for the lightning raids against the largely unarmed peasantry and clergy they preferred.

You don't have to be particularly strong to wear mail (as it's called originally. Chainmail is a modern term. Not incorrect or anything, just not what was used originally.) Strength honestly plays a very small role in wearing it. Your physical endurance is what matters. How long you could actually wear a weight on your shoulders mattered more than being able to lift a lot, for obvious reasons. Also, more often than not, from the period their armor and weapons are from, hand protection wasn't really a thing outside of a shield or a hand guard. Sometimes mail gloves were added to the ends of the sleeves, but not commonly. Lastly, the son's mail isn't accurate to history. It is thin and not riveted, which is far from how proper mail is made.

Physical endurance is what matters with armor in general, indeed. Sincerely pleasant to see someone knowing about the subject. However, having a belt or a way to distribute some weight on waist really eases it on shoulders, which is quite important knowing how arms were involved in battle.

About the son’s shirt: There is historical precedence for butted mail, but not from the time of the Vikings and not in Scandinavia. In all likelihood they wore just gambessons or perhaps just hardened leather (the same goes for the helmets, there is finds of metal but very few). Hauberks (which had sleeves and went down to the knees) could be 18 - 20 kilogrammes, while byrnies (pretty much t-shirts) were around 10 kilogrammes. Though, weights vary by how how big it is and how it's made. An example would be 4 rings into 1. Some parts were 8 into 2, which would make it stronger and stiffer, but it would make it heavier.

An example involving physically strong soldiers has absolutely no bearing on the argument, because what you're saying is, "you don't need to be strong to wear that, because strong people can carry even bigger loads". Well, that's neither here nor there.
@JimGiant10 жыл бұрын
The title of the video is "You Had to Be Strong *Just to Wear the Armor* as a Viking" This implies that even walking in the armour requires good physical strength so fighting in it would require near super human ability. To make such a big deal of Viking strength also implies that they are superior in strength to their modern counterparts hence why I brought them up. If there are millions of people in the world who can not only carry over twice as much as you but run for miles on end with it then you are not strong. This isn't to imply that Vikings weren't strong or didn't need to be strong, just that you don't need to be strong *just to wear* their armour.

The maille isn't butted, he mentions in the video it's riveted. It's hard to tell the difference with round maille, but when it zooms in you can see the flattened areas and the dome rivets through them. But yeah, leather armor in that sense is more of a 13th/early-mid 14th century thing. The thing that most sticks out to me though is the gambesons, not only the armpit holes but the fact that they're there at all when we had no evidence for quilted textile armors for vikings, they'd rather wear one or multiple thick tunics.

@sahlabslave9 жыл бұрын
"Vikings are the strongest" Wow, that is the least academic and provable statement i have heard in a while. If anything, heavy armor is very useful and effective due to warriors from the middle east (cataphracts/mamlukes) and western european warriors (knights) being very effective. When the vikings invaded andalus, they only succeeded when they attacked weak towns and villages. When they finally faced the andalusian army in a fair battle, all 16000 vikings were slaughtered. All 3 invasions of andalus by the vikings were destroyed. Now i dont hate vikings, they were actually good warriors. But saying vikings were the best and could kill anyone is bullshit due to the lack historical evidence we have about vikings. We dont know anything about their martial arts, or even if they had one.

As some people have pointed out, most Vikings would have used axes, not swords. Axes require less skill to forge, less metal, are less expensive, and are also used as a tool, so they are a more practical weapon for vikings. Also, chain mail was rarely worn- anyone who's tried making chain mail will know why- it takes hundreds of man hours to create a single shirt- it was therefor something ridiculously expensive and worn only by the wealthy and those of high status- thus, 90% of your average every-day vikings would not be wearing mail into battle- some historians argue they wore no armour at all, just their linen clothes and some hardened leather, when they raided Saxony and Normandy. So your average viking had an axe, no armour and if he was wealthy enough to afford one/picked one from a dead corpse on his raids, an iron helmet.

King Dormak As to my knowledge, I cannot recall there ever been a finding of leather armour in viking burial graves or any records of it in history- leather armour seems like the logical option if chain mail is too expensive, but there are no historical records of vikings wearing leather armour.

@ericeinarson665410 жыл бұрын
Rhynome Very true- I'm just stating the facts, there's no archaeological evidence of leather armour, you think even scraps of it would survive in a burial mound for example, but that's also a possibility. But I think even if leather armour was worn, it would still be rare, the majority of vikings did not wear armour- the shield was the primary defence, it protected a man from the neck to the knee- shields were cheap, armour was expensive, it was cost that was the deciding factor- I'm sure every viking would have loved a suit of mail, but whether they could afford one is a different matter.

Viking as we know it was an "anglo-saxion german" slang for the raiders who would attack the coastal villages. It was a mispronunciation of "víkingr." Before that they used the term scegdman "Boater or someone who uses a boat". Now víking in the feminine noun was the word for "expedition" or long journey. (remember germanic and "norse folk" have similar emphasis of wording. Something Anglo-saxian german [english] does not have.) The masculine emphasis however; "víkingr" is referring to warrior.

For a quick pass against primarily spearman, wouldn't you want something with comparable range at least? If you were stuck in the midst of troops it might be handier, but you'd want to avoid that if possible as Japanese horses weren't armored. Straight blades don't get stuck if you use proper technique, same sort of cutting motion curved swords use. Do you know if the samurai ever delved deep into grappling?

@-AwaleAbdi-8 жыл бұрын
+GamingTaylor From reading wikipedia (not very knowledgeable on Vikings myself): "According to custom, all free Norse men were required to own weapons and were permitted to carry them all the time. These arms were indicative of a Viking's social status: a wealthy Viking had a complete ensemble of a helmet, shield, mail shirt, and sword. A typical bóndi (freeman) was more likely to fight with a spear and shield, and most also carried a seax as a utility knife and side-arm. ... The difficulty of obtaining mail armour resided in the fact that it required thousands of interlinked iron rings, each one of which had to be individually riveted together by hand.[2] As a result, mail was very expensive in early medieval Europe, and would likely have been worn by men of status and wealth." (all seems adequately sourced) Seems like chain-mail was more of a wealthy man's armor rather than completely widespread. Makes sense...
@SassyPatches8 жыл бұрын
+Awale Abdi "As a result, mail was very expensive in early medieval Europe, and would likely have been worn by men of status and wealth." You quoted it yourself, chainmail was only really rare in the early medieval ages. These guys don't have to roleplay/re-enact from that period. Also, fun fact I noticed. The text mentions 'bóndi (freeman)'. Bonde is actually modern Swedish for farmer. I'd bet a raiding viking would more likely get himself a set of chainmail, compared to a farmer.

The Greeks traveled on ships too. I'm not sure how common it was around and after the time of the Peloponnesian War but at the time of the Iliad, the Odyssey and the Greek colonization of Italy most travel was done by boat because most of what we count as Greece back then wasn't part of the mainland of Greece. And the Vikings did engage in actual battles, the only way to go to Valhalla is to die in battle, according to the Vikings.

As far as i know they used either nothing or some extra layers of cloth. The Rus had sometjing gambeson-like. But i could be wrong. We know fairly little about the early middle ages. But gambesons like those used in the video are from the ca. 12. Century.

Kater Störenfried The reality is we don't know. Gambesons are a popular theory, I wouldn't discount them as "didn't have", when the reality is more like "inconclusive". And that goes for all viking armors. Literally all of them. We don't have enough evidence to conclusively support anything. The cloths and cottons are just as speculative as the gambesons by the way, there's nothing to support them either. They're all good guesses though, the Vikings had an array of linen and wool, the materials traditionally used in a gambeson. We know they had "vápntreyja", and that nearly confirms some sort of clothing besides armors and leathers, we just don't know what it is. Gambesons are loosely defined, they're basic to construct, the Vikings would have ran into them in the late to mid 11th century, and they're made of materials the Vikings were known to have and use. Their winter clothing might even have been similar to a gambeson in it's ability to defend the wearer, there's really no information out there because such materials don't last in a grave. Anyhow, there's not enough information to say they didn't, and as far as guesses go gambesons aren't a bad guess for the mid 11th to early 12th century vikings. Neither is winter clothing, or many of the other cloth materials, but to say gambesons are out of the question is just silly at this point.

A few points: 1) You DON'T need to be strong to wear mail armour, the weight is distributed in your shoulders and hips, it's actually quite comfortable. 2) That's not a gambeson, it's an arming jacket. A gambeson is thicker and while it could be worn under armor it would not be very comfortable. 3) I doubt the historical veracity of those armbands. Does anyone have any reference to armor like that being used by scandinavians during the Viking Age? As for everything else, that is a *really* nice kit. Good work on getting proper riveted mail!

I agree with the guys in the video. They seem to know what they are talking about. The padded gauntlets are kind of a hazard though. If you use mitts like that, it's even more dangerous because you can't hold on to your weapon as well, and can make many more mistakes, often causing even more serous injuries than hand injuries. Since they are choreographers, they should know all the protocols on safety in that business, and your hands should not be in any danger as long as they do what they are supposed to. I have done plenty of choreography with swords, and have never had a hand injury. The only gloves I wear at most are golfers gloves, because it keeps the oils from my skin from getting on the metal, causing rust. Also I would love to see them try to wear those gloves when trying to grip a viking era sword. The grip is barely big enough to fit your hand on, without gloves. Also the gambeson that he wore is nothing like a real gambeson, and probably doesn't do much. That said, their historical knowledge on chain mail is pretty good. It's nice to see a person actually use riveted mail. I do disagree with the narrator about them being fully geared like a viking, because Vikings like most cultures had many other weapons that they used more than swords. Swords were a secondary weapon in nearly any culture that we know of. If they had maybe a spear or axe, then they would have been kitted out. Also it does not take a lot of strength to wear that armor. It's not that heavy in the first point, and the weight is so well dispersed that you hardly notice it when wearing it. The rail pain is holding and using a shield for a long time. That takes some getting used to.
@CrispyChristieMAC11 жыл бұрын
Your military grade armor is also designed specifically to fit as perfect as possible to yourself with as tight to body feeling. Picture yourself riding a simple bicycle with a backpack that weighs 50 lbs, it's loose, that'd be some serious drag but if that bag is fastened tight to your body and properly displaced it's much easier to maintain. While yes, your military grade equipment weighs (depending on the munitions you carry) equivalent or even more then this, it's displaced properly.

The katana and viking broadsword both weigh in the 3-5 lb range. The balance varies quite a lot with both of them. Against armor, the straight edge with a hacking blow will bite better and deliver more force into the armor, while the curve and cutting technique will make the katana glance off more. Without a shield, you can't get in on a spear wall. You are also very vulnerable to cav charges, hence why I don't believe anyone was dumb enough to come to battle with a katana as their primary.

A normal soldier is expected to carry about 30-40kg in battle conditions, 14-18kg chainmail would be perfectly within reason. The sword weighs around 10kg and the rest weighs about 10kg (wooden shield, leather padding under the chainmail etc). When marching the vikings carried this and dried meat and water and heavy clothes (if at winter those clothes could weigh 10-15kg easily, not counting moisture). As well as tools (to sharpen swords, cut meat, hunt, fish, make fire, etc). Easy 80kg/person.
