In my case, the worst thing is to buy an expensive sketchbook. When I start to draw, I'm afraid of ruining a beautiful sketchbook with a failed drawing, so much so that I draw less and less in it. It really sucks the joy out of the whole process, because I can't relax and draw boldly. I don't have a lot of money, so I need to lower the consequences of failure.

I have never bought expensive sketch books for that reason. I have a few given to me that I’ve never used or have one drawing in them. My advice is to buy materials we can afford to waste. 😀

My (new) workaround: estimate how long I'll be using it --a month, two months? & see how much it costs per month. Not that much, say, $20-25? Next purchase: cheaper!😉

Very helpful, substantial advice. No nonsense like "oh just embrace the struggle of being a procrastinator" or lengthy analyses about perfectionism etc. Just practical advice with concrete steps to encourage action. Thank you.

Love your videos! Thanks for this. It is such a great topic. One of my biggest stumbling blocks is figuring out what drawing I can actually accomplish at my level of learning, with the time i have. I'm often inspired by scenes that end up feeling beyond my present abilities, such as scenes with intricate archetecture or complex textures. It's easy to feel discouraged once I fall short of my vision and realize the growth I have left to do. But I try to find a lesson in the rough and let myself move on when I feel stuck.

Have you seen my playlist of 10 minute drawings? This may help - and you can take longer with them if you want of course. If you really want to draw a certain building that is very ornate, try drawing from a small photo. This has the effect of simplifying what we can see clearly, and makes it a bit easier to draw. But better to wait till our skill levels give us a chance of drawing it well, I think. 😀

Super advice, once again, Stephen! Small, achievable steps and intentional focus. We need to 'paint' and plan our journey of learning, not just the individual works we create. In re-entering the world of art-making, I'd been going about drawing in a mish-mosh way and needed these pointers! Thank you for giving your time, effort and passion to these videos!!!

"Erasers are overrated." - A punk I knew in high school From then on I used ballpoint pens to sketch, and found that's how I got better, and also discovered a wonderful messiness to make gory or grungy scenes grittier, dirtier, and darker in mood. It was rather nice for sketching monsters ripping things apart. 😄

Being able to jump right into drawing has been crucial for me. I always have drawing tools (digital and physical) right beside me at home (sometimes on the road, too). That was a big issue with me not wanting to draw initially - the effort required to get started. I also have a pen and drawing paper right within arms reach in case you pick an animal or other creature for your reference. :)

I start drawing a kangaroo once, twice, . . . three times until I couldn’t bear how it kept looking any more and gave up. I’ll try and get an easier angle next time I see one. 😩
