This video covers hollowing an end grain vessel using square scrapers. I first go over the theory and then hollow out a pencil pot.

Excellent video, and you left in the difficult parts. I have had the exact same experience doing a pencil pot exactly the same as you have. I think that the heavier the scraper, and the longer and heavier the handle, the less violent vibration at the bottom of the hollowing. I had to stop at 5 and a half inches with the same tool setup and handle length that you did. In the future I am going to make some longer, heavier handles for the box scrapers that I used. If you notice, turners like Stewart Batty use really long heavy gouge handles when doing deep bowls, which is similar. What I don't understand, given my experinece, is how these people hollow out 10 and 12 inch hollowforms with little holes. Thanks and I want that lathe you are using.

David, have you thought of using a carbide tipped hollowing tool? And a box scraper? I use these two in making boxes. Both of these appear better suited to hollowing and then smoothing and squaring the end grain than using square scrapers. I was intrigued by the use of the French bedan, but I see that your particular tool is not substantial enough (long and thick) to resist the pressure of the rotating wood without chattering and fighting for control. I think the depth of the hole was just too deep to hollow using this tool.

We have similar technique. I use standard wood working straight chisels for 90% of my turning. I occasionally switch to a gouge when getting wood round and a skew for tight areas and pre sand smoothing. For parting off, I use (I'm not sure the true name) those sort of paddle shaped drill bits for boring out. I find the sharp point great for precision.

Is there supposed to be some safety issue with the temperament of standard chisels on a woodturning lathe?

New to turning. Could you use a forstner bit to remove most of the material?

I wonder if a square carbide scraper might have a use here? I have one and haven't found much use for it yet. Thanks for taking the fime and effort to make this.

Thanks on your explaination of the use of a square scraper.... I need to get me one of those thick ones for my hollow of my live edge bowls... I can't afford all three like your but could you recommend one to get started with??? and did you make the curve on one of your scrapers???? Thanks again for the lesson

Hi there, interesting video. I have been turning for over 25 years. Your comment about the chuck coming loose when you applied force with the cutting tool really baffled me. All be set up well it would not matter how much force you used, The Chuck should just get tighter and tighter. Just through pure curiosity, I would be interested to know exactly what happened with what set up. You are clearly a competent turner. I wish you all the best. Ricky

David Peters , Thanks for answering David, It sounds like you were lucky to have got away with that one. Well done again on producing videos, I’m sure many upcoming woodturners have gained valuable information. Sadly, there are many videos out there that are not so good. Keep up the good work my friend. Yours , Ricky

David Peters , I don’t know if you feel the same but have you noticed how many woodturning videos out there show them turning very green wood blanks. It’s obvious to an experienced turner but to a new turner it’s not. Subsequently when they attempt to turn a dry blank, they struggle and feel like they are doing something wrong. I think it should make it clear in the videos they make , Yours Ricky

Is your right hand too close? You're not using the tool handle at all, which I would think would decrease your ability to counter the leverage.

Hi again David, I was watching you have problems with hollowing the deeper section of that turning. I don't know if you have one but I have found that using a box making toolrest is very useful for this problem. It is a flat action of steel that you can use right inside this type of vessel. Giving you tremendous tool support. It's. About 2" wide and about 6" long. I have had one for many years and I have found it to be very useful, Yours Ricky. Here is a link to one for your reference www.machinery4wood.co.uk/product.php/site/froogle/sn/RS%2F768/google/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoebkjZ3s6wIVj7LVCh1ZpAEIEAQYAiABEgKM_PD_BwE It's part of Robert Sorby' S modular system. You would need their stem of the same diameter of your lathe
