Hi Andrew - if I put my Onkyo RZ-50 in pure direct mode, would I not have a ton of more functionality for $1200.00 vs an $1800.00 strictly 2.1 amp with nowhere near the functionality? What are yours and Kristie's thoughts?
@billd9667 Жыл бұрын
@@Audiomainia2310 Well, if you require 5.1 Home Theater, the Onkyo makes more sense. I don't know about "more functionality". For stereo music alone, the 1000A does as much and with better (and more stable) power and fidelity than the Onkyo. The Onkyo cannot handle 4 ohm loads and lower with grace. This more or less comes down to the use of a very beefy 2 channel class A/B power supply vs. a switching class D that is asked to handle 11(!) channels.

I definitely need HDMI. I want to build a stereo system that can be used for 2-channel music as well as TV. I originally was thinking of getting the 7000A, but after seeing this review, the Yamaha is now my top pick for an integrated amplifier for this use case
@PaulHaussler-bs1qi Жыл бұрын
Impressive product... I was surprised by Kristi's impression. The Yamaha N1000A has a lot in common with the A-S801 integrated amp. Kristi was not as enthusiastic with that. The N1000A does offer pre-amp outputs and apparently discards the subwoofer filter. Those are improvements! YPAO and HDMI offer benefits, but not for this two channel guy. FWIW we use a basic A-S301 that replaced Adcom separates when the GTP-500 refused to be repaired. The A-S301 cost less than the attempted repairs for the Adcom. Lesson learned... I’m a bit late today, but I’ve got thoughts lol: 1) HDMI today is a must in any integrated amplifier for me. Those who think you need everything separately, then go separates? Integrated should be fully capable of doing whatever you want from it aside from making you dinner. HDMI is a must. 2) I think audiophiles (not all of them, but a lot of them) have been holding this hobby hostage, with their stubbornness and their inability to accept progress and change. That needs to stop and we’re seeing more and more brands realizing it and starting to go out there like this Yamaha. 3) I’m absolutely going to choose a cheaper integrated from the same brand if it’s performance sonically is 90% of the top dog yet the price is 50-60%. That’s awesome, we need to see more products like this and especially with tons of features built in. 4) Awesome review as usual! I think this piece of gear is an absolute steal. Especially when you compare it to Rotel S14 and that price… Hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday!

I think you're starting to see a real choice being offered to the consumer now. Like the Yamaha, the new Marantz Stereo 70s (2.1) vs the Marantz Cinema 70s (7.1) - single HMDI and high(er) output vs multiple HDMI with more speaker outputs (with a sacrifice in power and ultimate audio quality?)|| Each group can now optimise for their own preferences. It would be interesting to understand the compromises / advantages of these choices in more detail.

I'm taking long look at the Yamaha amps (receivers) This 1000 is a good value. The "2000" looks cool but has high price. Then the purer "1200" & "2200" Integrated Amps -- also of interest. Right now I'm between this "1000" level (but no meters, sadly) but size easier to deal with - as well as price. Or maybe stretching to get a "2200" at the best price I can find (even if I have to wait for a "special") I have a Yamaha last 22 years -- the RX-777. It's a good Receiver, and better once broken-in for a year or two. (I expect these newer Yamahas will also benefit by a good long break-in period.)

hdmi input is fantastic to cover one scenario: optical disk player, with output hdmi-audio only; as there is one (reavon) that covers almost all scenarios, from CD/SACD, DVD-Audio, and maybe Bluray-Audio, it is even good to handle movie sound; and the power to move loudspeakers of 8ohms at 110-220w is an eye opener.

Great review. I won't consider any new device that doesn't support HDMI ARC these days. I'm slightly disappointed that Yamaha continues to not support Chromecast built-in in many of their devices. Luckily, as you mention, the MusicCast app is quite good and includes most music streaming services. Question! In your opinion, does the R-N1000a sound greatly better than the Yamaha's Aventage (AVR) line around this price range (A4A, A6A)? For me personally, if the sound quality isn't a huge improvement, frugal me could regret getting this receiver over the additional diversity/flexibility of features offered by the Aventage line.

Also for Dirac, it was a real gift from the universe (and the Swedish DSP algorithm wizards). As a person who's room has 2 huge almost +10dB peaks between 40 and 60hz (with a +5db "dip" between them) and then several +3-5dB peaks (and small dips) in the 100-200hz area, the implementation of Dirac took my 2.1 systems (connected to my TV with an HDMI 😉) sound to a whole different level. Even my mother would notice such a vast difference.

I think if you are going to have optical and digital coax, then HDMI should also be included. 10 years ago I was very naive to the entire DAC drama (and in some ways it was a better world) However, I also applaud Yamaha for building some very analog integrated amps and hope they don't drop that line. I have a 5.1 system for the TV and I like an analog 2 channel music system where I supply the streamer and DAC for music. Some of this isn't from the analog purist mindset, I get burned out on buying an expensive do everything integrated just to want eARC a few years later and... Then needing to buy a new integrated. When the power and sound of the old amp is still very nice. A modular design is also nice if a component is obsolete or fails, I can get another DAC, another streamer. I applaud NAD for modular design in the aspect of planning for new inputs. I don't swap out systems often and I despise planned obsoletion.

For me personally Yamaha has always made professional products not just in their hi-fi equipment but generally anything they touch. I think HDMI port is a handy thing to have, plug in your television or even just putting a HDMI Blu-ray player to your system is very handy feature. I think this product in the 2 channel market will be very popular, Yamaha could be considered to be a little bit cautious in the way they present their products. But in saying that you know you are going to get a reliable and enjoyable product for the money you spend. Andrew, I’d love to see you do a video on centre channels speakers, I think this is a topic that homes hi-fi thesis would love to have your feedback!

Your talk about HDMI being digital reminds me of reading people bashing optical in favor of digital coax back in the day. Love your channel. I’m not at all in the market for this product but watch anyway.

Every time I have used the Yamaha proprietary correction, it never sounds better than when I manually tune it when understanding all in every single setting of the equipment running through it in a way of trial and air to the ear plus previous knowledge of things, 100% of the time that always works out better and I wonder how many people just plug in the mic run its test and assume it's going to be better than anything that you can do? AFAIK, the Yamaha network receivers do not support gapless playback. They also do not support scrubbing within a song. I have these issues on my 2000A and Yamaha verified it in a support request. It's fixable with either a firmware or MusicCast (or both), but Yamaha has not done so for 10+ years. WiiM fixed their gapless issue in weeks after a Darko video mentionioned it. If WiiM can do it, Yamaha with their billions in revenue certainly can - and may do so, so it's not hopeless. Also, it must be known that Yamaha chose to use Bluetooth 4.2 when BT 5.x has been available for years. Maybe it doesn't matter, but hey...

In the past you were a big proponent of AVRs for stereo/music with room correction being a main factor, and now there is the hybrid solution within the same price range (rn2000a being a lot more expensive). So should those of us considering 2(.1) setups for streaming and television who’d like some room correction still consider the RXA4A, or go straight for the rn1000a? And would that, in terms of quality (not just “waste of input space”), be a better choice? Or do AVRs, besides expandability, still have aces up their sleeves?

Nice Review, I tried this, and had Yamaha S801 and Marantz Model 40n. Bought the Marantz, for me it's wasn't close. Marantz had a natural tone, better sounding features and was more powerful (ignore the specs). the 1000 was ok but sounded more like class D, thin and flat, and not like the 801. 801 has elevated treble and elevated boomy base. Just my impressions...

I've used YPAO in the past and it seemed like my bass disappeared in my home theater setup. I checked the settings and saw it had reduced the subwoofer by a -10 dB. I used the settings as a starting point and made manual adjustments until I was satisfied with the sound. My final settings had the subwoofer at a +3 dB. So ultimately, your ears are the final judge and I've always manually tweaked my settings to what suit me and my rooms. Yes, I have multiple setups in different rooms, one for home theater and the others for music.
@ralphmckenzie8802 Жыл бұрын
I've had many amps over the years and I never use room correction - I always setup everything manually to my taste. There's no way I trust any of the room correction functions. After 55 years in the audio hobby, I will always trust my ears first, I build my own speakers and I know how they should sound and perform with various amps.

@billd9667 Жыл бұрын
Depends what you like. The Lintons (I own a pair which are connected to a 2000A) are *relatively* warm sounding. If the 1000A is a "bit bright*, then the Linton''s slight warm character would be neutralized. IMO, it would be a good match. If you are over 50 (our hearing degrades over time), I wouldn't hesitate.

Well some many manufacturers are listening. Kudos to all of them. I have always been a fan of Yamaha and their products. HDMI is here and now. Gone are the day of using RCA out’s from your TV to your stereo just to get better sound. Plus there usually no sub-out on these products. I am curious if they included their famous Pure Direct button and if so what did you find. Thanks a bunch. Totally worth it.

@robinsonbrand Will do. BTW: What's up with manufacturers referring to components like these as "amplifiers", even though they clearly incorporate tuner sections (usually FM-only, which is totally cool by me)? Is the term "receiver" now considered too A/V plebian?

Thank you for the great review Andrew! But here is a question: Is there any reason I should prefer RN1000A over the RX-A4A (it's an AV, but I'm just thinking of stereo configuration)? The first one retails for $1,799 and the latter for $1,299 (there is a discount currently, but even without it it's still cheaper), while it has output power of 110 watts per channel and Also gives you the flexibility to build your surround system if you wish. Are there any fundamental differences in these Amps that make the RN1000A better for music? I am no hi-fi specialist, so probably will not notice minor differences in the sound. And another question: did you have a chance to run PolkAudio R700 on one of these receivers/amps? How did that go? :) (was there enough power?)

I love my AS301 stereo amp with digital connections, combined with the Yamaha CD network player combo from some years ago. I am very keen on upgrading, mostly because the 301 is sligthly underpowered, but very neutral. I am totally in love with the RN2000A, however the 1000A is so much more affordable. I guess the multiroom/multicast is also a big bonus. Not sure on importance on HDMI (most TVs have digital out?) so even the RN800A might even be a good alternative. I am so happy Yamaha get the attention it so deserves at the moment in Hifi/audiofile land :-)
@BrianT17520 күн бұрын
HDMI allows you to control everything with one remote. You turn on your tv and the AVR comes on. You turn the volume up and the receiver goes up in volume. It's a lot better than just digital out.

I understand why you refer to NAD as sterile but I do find it a bit ironic. To me, sterile means that the speakers determine the sound of the system, no matter the speakers (as long as power needs are being met). So when you refer to the KEFs as neutral and taking on the sound characteristics of the amp, and referring to that positively, I don't quite understand why that characteristic on the amplifier side is worthy of dismissal. None of this is to say your preference is invalid, just your language around NAD products felt harsh here.

I’m a Yamaha fan boy, but Yamaha R-N1000 & R-N2000 are hard passes for me. I have an older Yamaha R-S700 Receiver I use in my garage and it seems as if Yamaha uses the same amp section in this as they did in my R-S700, the R-S700 specs actually show slightly less distortion in my R-S700. This is the same as the R-S & A-S700 and beyond. Save money, buy a dac if needed HDMI? It’s not important in two channel stereo, it just isn’t. The R-N2000 is basically an A-S1200 with a radio and dac built in, not worth the extra money. I also have the A-S1200 and the decades older more powerful CA-2010. As I said, I’m a Yamaha guy but just don’t see the value an extra 1K buys you here.
@driver9337 Жыл бұрын
I'm trying to decide between the A-S1200 and this R-N1000A. Are you satisfied with your A-S1200? What DAC do you use with it?
@NA94753 Жыл бұрын
@@driver9337I’m really happy with the A-S1200. The dac I use? I have different dacs I move around. The range from Schiit Modi & Bitfrost, Cambridge dac magic 200M. Not a huge user of dacs or streamed music. Technology advances so fast I view all in one units like the R-N 2000/R-N1000 wasted cash. I have a 1978/1979 Yamaha CA-2010, the A-S1200 was bought to give the old amp a bit of a break. The A-S1200 sounds an awful lot like my cherished CA-2010. If I’m Honest, the CA-2010 120 wpc does get louder, does hit a bit harder in the bass department but the only way I can really push either amp is with hearing protection. At DB levels up to 105db or less I can’t tell them apart. To me the higher end Yamaha’s have an almost tube like leaning presentation. As far as the R-N1000? For me that would be a hard pass because of the money they want and the amp section isn’t any different from my R-S700 or the A-S700/701/801. Don’t get me wrong, it sounds decent enough but they sure aren’t on the same level as the A-S1200 which just sounds to my ears better. The A-S1200, uses mosfets, weighs double and draws far more current from the wall. That current translates into deeper, better controlled base. My R-S700 needs a sub, my CA-2010 & A-S1200 don’t. The higher end Yamaha also sound really good to me at lower volumes too. The R-S700 which is the Same amp section has to be pushed a little to get decent sound to my ears. Best advice? Demo them yourself in person

Love your channel! Re Yamaha, I wish you got to review their older YSP soundbars (sound projector) models, like the YSP 2200 or the YSP 2700 compared to modern offerings. They were the first I think to use projected beams to walls to create true surround.
