8mm cine film shot by me in the final weeks of steam operation on BR in July and August 1968.
The video begins with some workings from Carnforth before moving to Copy Pit and the sheds at Rose Grove and Lostock Hall.
On the 4th of August there were a number of steam hauled enthusiast specials and these were filmed at Entwhistle viaduct , Turton, and Lydgate viaduct as well as other locations.
BR commemorated the end of steam by running the "15 Guinee special" on the 11th August and this is seen outbound on Ribblehead viaduct and returning at Ais Gill summit where 70013 is also seen following light engine.
The video has an authentic soundtrack recorded by me at the time of filming.

Thank you, great video and maybe the Gibson family's only Internet appearance... Somewhere at 11.17 is an Austin 1100 with 2 small children, a very tolerant wife and very excited Dad! He got a really good section of Cine with Oliver Cromwell leaving Ribblehead station and heading out on to the viaduct. All i have to do now is find it, scan it and share it - one day 🙂

Thanks for sharing these amazing videos, we don't realise what we had until it's gone, thanks to the preservation movement for saving some of our beloved railways

Thanks for this. I was 4 in 1968 so I missed all this sadly😢 My passion for steam locomotives started in 1969 when my dad took me to Tyseley to see 4472 just before she left the UK for her USA tour. Such a shame 45156 didn’t make it into preservation 😢

Really high quality footage and fantastic sound too - always something of a rarity back then. Very historically significant so thanka for sharing.

Excellent record of steams final days. I never lost my interest in railways but after the end steam it was a few years before I went out to see a train. I am glad we saved so many locomotives and can see them out on the main, they never look right all shiny and clean though. I do remember one of the last standards I saw being clean, it had come to take the wagons out of the local brick works siding, I guess the work of the Master Neverers

At the time I had this very strong feeling that I was losing old friends. Lovely video. As it turned out the preservation movement proved extraordinarily successful and many of those ‘friends’ are still with us. One either ‘gets’ steam or not. It’s pointless explaining it to those who don’t. They still won’t get it. And it’s pointless explaining it to those who already do ‘get’ steam. It’s a form of love really; one that is extra to the other forms (romantic, chivalric, brotherly and sisterly, that interesting Japanese form ‘Amae’, patriotic and so on). ‘Enthusiasm’ for steam isn’t quite the word but nobody has come up with a better one. Incidentally, just like other forms of love, it varies by country being very high in the UK, Japan and Hungary. Sociologists argue convincingly that forms of love vary for sociological reasons. This seems likely. In other words we as individuals are not singularly responsible for what we feel. That is to suggest, there is something in Britain’s history that explains the extraordinary growth in our affection for steam that grew so strongly from about 1920 to 1968 and survived beyond. Sound Whistle.

And , to think , 56 years later , now 100 year old steam engines still thunder around , show me a 100 year old electric loco .... those aweful diesel heitage units are ugly old unreliable plonkers that need a complete rebuild after 80 hours of use , steam engines get a wash out service every 28 days , electric is so throw away . Short sighted BR and listening to that loser Beecham destroyed a brilliant rail network . Steam is greatness personlfied , electric is boring ...
