Track will get tied in tonight to the existing rails on the east end of this section.
Work is progressing nicely for the limited amount of man power and machines
that were available. In less than 24 hours from when this video was taken, they
ran their first train over this section on a 10 MPH slow order.
Apologize if I sounded really tired in this video, I was! It was made after working 10 hours
non stop that day. 2 more videos are coming on the track repairs, both of those
will have some of the actual work being done in them. Please also understand that
with the train not being able to run, the job was to get track back in service as
quickly as possible and with that said I had to do my part in the work and not
spend much time making videos. I was doing this video as I was making an
inspection of the work that had gotten done and assessing what else needed
to get accomplished.
I am posting pictures of the derailment on the Community Tab on my
channel about the derailment and track rebuild so keep checking back there to see
new ones coming out.
/ @ccrx6700
Plus there are many more videos at the derailment here on the Cumberland Mine RR
located near Kirby Pa. Here's the link to see all the videos:

I was on a track job a few years back using a Jordan spreader, we were cleaning out a ditch I was the engineer, we were pushing in notch 4/5 are first pass went well, the second not so much, the wing happened to find the foundation of a old signal mast, needless to say it pushed that entire plow sideways rolling the rail and derailing the entire plow and first set of trucks on the locomotive, what made it worse was we were on welded rail, it rolled that rail about 6 car lengths up around a curve. It was the most gut wrenching stomach turning experience to see the amount of damage that was done only within seconds..I can only imagine how you must have felt to see all the damage on that rail. Looking much better now though compared to the video after the derailment..keep up the great work, really enjoy seeing some of the other experiences other railroads are going threw and how they handle it..👍👍

I have learned a very great deal from your videos about track maintenance. I was already aware of issues about 'High Speed' rail requiring welded joints in the track, which can cause problems in high temperatures with the rail expanding (IE lengthening), and so distorting the line. I know in the UK the cost of building a stretch of High Speed line is eye-watering. From your videos I see how much work is required to keep the line safe for 25 mph. What it would take for a passenger train traveling at TWO HUNDRED miles an hour I can not imagine! Then I hear calls for rolling out HS rail over the whole USofA! A great idea, but I think these folks have no IDEA about what it would take!
@ccrx6700

Yes sir, it takes major bucks to build the HS rail, our country is woefully lacking in that unlike so many other countries, but there's lot of talk of doing it here! Thanks for the nice comment and for watching

Track damage can go beyond just where the derailment occurred. Moving equipment for the contractor esp if soggy can chew it up. MILW & CNW yard and branch trackage always had grooves from minor derailments. The new concrete ties are basically throw away material when they crack. Thanks for the updates

I worked in a job that for the first 15 years required 10, 12, or 18 hour days. When you pull an 18 it takes a week to get back to semi-normal as you went either from day shift to night or night shift to day. And then back on 12s. Do that for 90 straight days and by the end, you can't even remember if you stopped at a stop sign that you had just left. And if one of the crew got sick or had to take time off the site, the others would have to split a shift. Worst days were Aug 21-24 1992. Worked an 18 from 1800 8/21 to 1200 8/22. Then had 18 off till 0600 8/23. At 1600 got to go home for ~two hours and back again at 1800. Then didn't get off work until 1600 on 8/24. Was not a good weekend for anybody in our part of South Florida. We on occasion had to spend 24 hours onsite listening to Detroit Diesel 12V71s or Cummins 8.3s at 1800 RPM. Something that when you are tired, will put you to sleep right next to the running engines. I don't miss those days as they will wreck your health if you do too many of them for too long. Hope Dave got a good rest.

Clearly having the ability to get a few tons of ties, and having a bunch of rail available helps greatly. Seeing how rapidly what looks like 1/4 to 1/2 mile of track getting re-laid after the destruction was amazing. (My only semi-equivalent was the rework of the 5 miles of EBT rail getting totally renewed during the spring time and last fall with a small crew was also amazing...) Having seen your analysis of the failure, and the car that caused it fits nicely with the mess that resulted. TONS of work, but then that is what happens at the railroad...

An old gravel mountain road close to my house used pieces of rail as pilings to retain it. They paved the road about 15 years ago and they just bulldozed all the rail down the mountain side. You can still find decent 6 or 8 foot chunks of it, the biggest challenge is finding 3 or 4 good friends to help you haul it back up to the road.

Relay rail ? This is a labor of love. I have always wondered about rail reading. I could ask those big questions. Concrete ties? Expensive I assume. Along with a bunch of other reasons. Just the thought of all those tons on a slim rail. Sure it works has for a real long time. I am asking silly questions but a cross brace rail to rail would stop some issues. But every few feet sure be impractable. For someone learning and or just interested. Ties layed on rock rail nailed down and ballest on ties and those skinny rails just seems it would not make to last first train. But lasts un known trains. So cool you explain to us. Thanks for watching I beg to differ thank you for posting. All the possible reasons others would not think of sharing. You sure are keeping me from asking the Iowa interstate crew from my billions of Guestions. Again thank you.

@@ccrx6700 I grew up on the Big 4 Dow line from Anderson Indiana to Elkart Indiana, back at the end of the NYC into PC the line had ties that would pump mud as a long freight went North or South!! There were a few derailments too, me and my Grandfather spent a whole afternoon one time in the late 60s watching a wreck crew rerail 5 boxcars and a SW7 that rolled over the rails and grounded, NYC brought in a huge wreck crane and picked up the cars and engine and set them back on the track and as a 7year old that was fascinating!!!!!!!!! That was a very good article I hope you can find it!!!!!!!

@@ccrx6700 Soon as Conrail took over, they pulled the track thru our farm in Ohio. One of the last runs I filmed of it had them running at about 5 MPH. They pulled back that year to a mine about 10 miles North of us. Next year they pulled back to where the track ends today. I have both the wooden milepost and the modern reflectorized one from on our farm. Milepost 1040. Does that make the modern one MP 1040A? :-) It took 16 years to get a final settlement and completely clear title on the ROW. At one point, my parents owned 2 miles of that ROW because PC/Conrail would not sell the ROW back directly to the landowners it crossed and would only sell in chunks. Although the original deeds were by the landowner and said that it not used for rail transportation, that the land reverted back to the landowners.

I knew that the wheels riding the web was gonna be a problem! Fun, fun, fun!!!!!!! It might be a good idea to dig deep into why that cars truck refused to rotate so that another car doesn't try the same thing. It very well could have been a reversal in the turning moment with the flange biting the high rail coming around the curve. After all, the flanges rode the web of the high rail!!!!!! Was there any super L in that curve? With the way the rails were spread out so wide, it might be the possibility of a reversal in the turning moment! Just wondering!

Question about track laying and jointed track in curves. Will the track naturally bend as it is installed in curves or will it need prebending? Correct me if I am wrong but I think the seamless rail will bend itself around curves during installation.
@thenasadude6878
@thenasadude6878 3 жыл бұрын
If you search videos about laying track, you'll be surprised at how bendy the rail is. That's extremely noticeable when the new rail is manipulated by an excavator (usually with pliers instead of a bucket attachment). My guess is that the rail will follow the curve if the ties are laid properly and the curve radius is within the elastic deformation limit of the rail

I don't even want to know. I own a small trucking company and recently had to have one of my rigs towed from a crash scene. The tractor and trailer are a total loss but luckily, nobody was seriously injured and my driver wasn't at fault. However, due to the condition of my equipment and the fact that it had to travel nearly 700 miles back home (I wanted it here), it cost me nearly $20k for recovery and transport. I know that's only a fraction of what this cost but, it's never cheap when you have to bring out the big boy toys!

Isn't the "legal" operating limit in the USA 1 good tie every 5 ties a requirement for 5 ~ 10 MPH operation? I guess you could in theory run a train through there now with slow orders, but I think I would want more ties in place first as well. Do they legally have to replace all the spikes and tie plates when something like this happens or can the tie plates be re-used? I assume all new spikes are needed.

CFR 49 states that on class 2 track there must be a minimum of 9 good cross ties per rail stick, however it is obvious that the more the better.
