Now, the Queen Mary’s fate is once again Uncertain. The city’s biggest concerns remains the repairs and future development for the aging Queen Mary. RMS Queen Mary is a retired British ocean liner that sailed primarily on the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 Cunard White Star Line.
Queen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage on 27 May 1936 and won the Blue Riband that August she lost the title to SS Normandie in 1937 and recaptured it in 1938, holding it until 1952 when it was taken by the new SS United States. With the outbreak of the Second World War, she was converted into a troopship and ferried Allied soldiers during the conflict.
Following the war, Queen Mary was refitted for passenger service and along with Queen Elizabeth commenced the two-ship transatlantic passenger service for which the two ships were initially built. The two ships dominated the transatlantic passenger transportation market until the dawn of the jet age in the late 1950s. By the mid-1960s, Queen Mary was ageing and was operating at a loss.
After several years of decreased profits for Cunard Line, Queen Mary was officially retired from service in 1967. She left Southampton for the last time on 31 October 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, United States, where she remains permanently moored. The ship serves as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, a museum and a hotel. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has accepted Queen Mary as part of the Historic Hotels of America.

It needs a ton of money for a full restoration. Last I heard. The price tag is in the hundreds of millions. And the hull is basically shot. Closest dry docks are in San Diego. And the biggest fear is she probably wouldn’t make it there. Unless you know someone with a lot cash, or major donations drive, or somehow convince the city to sell it, I don’t see much of a future for it.

Very well said sir! You are so right! The same thing came across my mind... It will be a shame if that wonderful piece of History doesn't get the proper attention that is required right now. First of all, if help comes, and I hope it will, should be the rescue of the original CUNARD BUFF. That charcoal grey on the hull and the proper color bellow the waterline. That wonderful ship becomes wrong without those colors. The SS UNITED STATES should get the same help as well... Greetings from Brazil.

I was lucky enough to see the Queen Mary sail into Long Beach when I was kid. My Father took my Sisiter and Iand a few of our friends down to the old Pier J. We waited with a few hundred other folks as it slowly approached the breakwater gate. It had a huge flotilla of small boats and other watercraft crowded all around it, and the Goodyear Blimp hovering above. I remember seeing a London Double-Decker bus near the stern as it passed us, a little closer than expected, and made a right turn at the old Pier Point Landing. It was quite exciting....I think I was 9yo at the time. A short time later, you could see her in the huge drydock at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard as you crossed over the "Admiral's Hat" bridge. She needed a lot more attention than originally planned, and was there for quite a while. It was a thrill to finally take the tour many years later. I think she's a beautiful ship, and I will always have fond memories of her.

I think the best thing for the ship is to have her dry docked permanently. You could get a great new perspective by including a path around the base of the ship and seeing the remaining propeller up close and personal. There are two major challenges with trying to move her. The ship is very top heavy because the boilers have been removed as well as most of the engines. The other challenge is the rock formation built up around the ship. An extensive environmental survey would need to be conducted before moving these rocks to determine what wildlife has created a home there.

She has been my favorite spot in the county and it breaks my heart how she has deteriorated so much since I started going years ago. Long Beach has for 40+ years pursued private operators to run and maintain the ship, and time and time again it has proven to be a bad venture. We need to pressure Long Beach to completely rethink how to run the Mary, its clear that the old method of running the ship is failing, especially under hard times like Covid. I really think that the Queen Mary's operations could benefit greatly by looking at similar large scale museum projects that run both as a museum and a for profit business. Like, look at a venture like the Cumbres and Toltec in Colorado/New Mexico; it's a railroad owned by the two states that has a private company run tourist trains and its related infrastructure, and a non-profit volunteer group that fundraises, restores, and maintains historic elements of the railroad that is not used in the day to day operations of the scenic railway. The Queen Mary could really benefit from such an organizational method, and could operate with a private company running the hotel and catering wings of the ship with it being responsible for the restoration and maintenance of elements needed for the business to operate, a non-profit wing that runs the museum and restores/maintains elements that is not necessary to the Hotel/Catering portion of the business, and finally for elements that effect both the business and museum aspect of the ship both entities would work together to both finance and carry out the work required. Its a shame that the talk has not centered around that, and instead has focused on trying to prop up this asinine business model that has failed FOR YEARS.

It costs what it costs irrespective of occupancy or cash flow projections or 'smart' business plans. It is obvious it needs to be sent to Drydock & set up in a dry basin permanently that allows easier hull maintenance from both sides. It is still a ship regardless of it operating as a hotel & has a place in history as troop ship that visited Sydney in 1940 during WWII.

For years I've thought it need to put in dry dock for extensive maintenance. I was told the nearest dry dock that can handle it is over 100 miles away. That's a big tow. Plus, first, you have to take down the wall built all around it. Sending it back to Great Britain might be feasible, but I've been told it's unlikely it could stand a transatlantic crossing.

The City of Long Beach doesn't know what to do, that's the problem with the current city council. They may need some new blood in there, but the council members all campaing on a laundry list of silly politically-correct causes so they are not focused on the QM. The hull was rusting badly last time I stayed on her 2 years ago. It appears that the City of LB didn't negotiate wisely with this current "operator" because the structural problems need to be addressed and sadly the city doesn't have as much control over upkeep as they should have insisted on.

It is remarkable that this wonderful ship still exists at all. I think that if long term preservation is the aim that a completely new approach will be needed. Staying on the Queen is a unique experience and was a real highlight of our visit to LA. But steel rusts and dry docking is essential for preservation. Either the ship must be stored like the VASA or IMO brought back to full commercial operational status with new engines and systems. Both are monumental tasks.

I love the Queen Mary! My late grandfather sailed on her decades ago. It remains a showcase of history to a kinder, gentler, simpler time when life was far better than today. I used to walk the ship and enjoy meals years ago, and it has always been a wonderful experience. The problem is that the constant and exorbitant charge for everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, especially parking is a great disincentive to visit and have fun. When it first opened when Mr. Jack Wrather operated it the ship was maintained properly and it was a center of attraction for the City of Long Beach.

The Queen Mary has been going down hill for years. The last time we visited none of the escalators worked and only one elevator worked. In addition they had let most of the plants die around it making it look like so poorly maintained it was sad. The restaurants food quality had gone down hill and the rooms were over priced, and weren't clean as they should be. Finally when walking aboard it was obvious that the shore line connections that bring in water, electricity ect... were badly neglected and ready to fail. Finally the ships maintenance consisted of one coat of paint to cover dust, and two coats to cover rust. No treatment, no removal, just paint over it. So sad, her art deco hallways and promenade were beautiful.

meanwhile the USS Texas is going to finally be worked finally and that one was really sinking for a while. I'm sure the city can pull money to fix the Queen Mary but they need to find a competent company that will actually do its job. perhaps multiple companies would be better as that would spread money around better to projects that needs to be done around the ship and area. Maybe Long beach should get in contact with Disney Again. Its a long shot but not impossible. After all Disney failure with Queen Mary had more to do with Euro Disney's failure which changed much of the companies views and policy's especially themeparks world wide as they recovered.

First step, dry dock the ship. Eliminate the threat of flooding & open up the ship for public viewing...literally... Cut parts of the ship sides away so people can see the inner workings. Safe to say the ship is never gonna sail again, so think outside the box & have fun with it. Add more public facilities like a swimming pool or bowling alley, pool hall or skating arena, a cinema with game arcades maybe... give people a reason to go there, not just catering for hotel guests. -Whilst the dock is flooded, let people row small boats around the ship, or use paddle boats ect. Cabins at water level could have a balcony, big glass front, overlooking the water. Invite a dive school to dive & train at the site. Build an underwater viewing room / aquarium. I'd pay money to do any of those things at such a beautiful location.

Wow. Everyone wants the ship to be saved and tells their heart warming stories about visiting it, but ignores the obvious. The ship itself, the lease with the city, and the property development are mammoth expenses. The operator can't manage any of them without money coming in. And no other operator is going to consider taking on those expenses, even if they're renegotiated, unless they can generate an income from it. Write your governor and legislature and pressure them to lift the lockdowns, shred the mask mandates and social distancing, and reopen the economy. Then the ship might have a future.

I was on the Q Mary in Southampton just before she left for America, September 1967 I was in the engine room She was being prepared for her last Voyage to Long beach. Three things caught my attention 1/ was how slim the ship was. 2/ the size of the funnels you could have passed a double-decker bus through any one of them & 3/ The old propellers lay on the quayside they were massive the twist in the blade was huge I could walk under them. and I am 6'-2inch. We saved Old Ironsides and she is a wooden vessel. We know a lot more about materials restoration now. What might help is a public campaign to raise money for her restoration. Give a fancy certificate or something to those who contribute a modest amount ($25.00 or so). Many people giving modest amounts is better than 1 person giving a huge amount. People need to consider themselves part owners. Campaign should include US, UK, and Canada, some Carribean islands (such as Bahamas, Grand Cayman, British Virgin Islands) for sure. I stayed on the ship in 2013 for one night and took one of the tours, it was an awesome experience! After the tour I expressed interest about seeing the (no longer used) pool to the guy at the front desk and he said..."let me see what I can do..." He called my room about 15 minutes later and he had arranged for one of the security guys to give me a private tour at no charge! The security guy and I walked around the pool area for about 30 minutes, using our phone flashlights for better visibility and it was really a great experience. While the security guy did not want to accept a tip, I insisted as was the same scenario when I insisted that the front desk guy accept one as it really made my night. Later, 2 other guests and I were able to explore other parts of the engine room as well. I hope they find a solution for her.

Her hull is now way too thin and when they converted her they removed many supporting bulkheads and that made her unseaworthy. Ten new ships could be built for what it would cost to make her seaworthy and re power her. And with all of the wood aboard her, including wooden decks, she would never meet current safety standards. Ain’t gonna happen. Hopefully someone can just come up with enough money to dry dock her and repair the hull enough for static display. But getting her to a dry dock would require a long ocean tow that she may not survive.

Please forgive the negative tone here...It's been sitting in port longer than it sailed. She may be trying to escape one particle at a time. The number of people who could have had a direct connection with it's heyday dwindles every year. Back in the day there was an adventure connected with each sailing. The crew were real maritime workers in the old tradition. As the History Guy might say, the QM deserves to be remembered but deserves the dignity of not being remembered as a patched -up pseudo icon. Recreate the cabins on shore, honor the life of some artifacts. Her old neighbor, the Spruce Goose, is an attraction along side other interesting aircraft but could not survive on it's own especially since it won't fly again. People see restored locos, cars and aircraft because they do what they always did and in most cases, come to the audience. Does anyone see that for the QM? She survives, so take her down gently.

There’s a reason she’s been there longer then she’s been sailing buddy, she touches the hearts of so many. QM and US are the last surviving ocean liners out of hundreds. @@zacrs4 I was a teen-ager when the QM was brought to town and I visited a few times before I moved out of So. Cal. My former GF would tie herself to the ship if it would save it. There is not enough space here to adequately express both my basic sympathy and fatalistic assessment. While it's true that they "touch the hearts of so many," the U.S. and the QM are both having their ownership and preservation issues. So apparently it's either not enough or not often enough to turn a profit to the satisfaction of whoever happens to own/manage them. It's an issue you're free to solve. I miss the Helms Bakery, my neighborhood in Inglewood before the 405, free admission to Knotts and maybe a few other things that were victims of their time.
