Did Havila honour the free one way trip for the future and if so timeframe for using it? Could you use the trip in summer as well or only to return in winter? ps Have really enjoyed each one of your presentations and Poppy is so sweet 😊 Thank you for sharing. I was going to do this trip in November although have since discovered it's not snowing yet then so would miss the sledding etc.. Is Trodenheim more picturesque than Tromso? The rough ship is definitely a turn off for me though but you seemed to handle it quite well

We will go over it more in our review. But yes they did. You had to book it within month after getting off and if I remember correctly it had to be used in a year or two. And it could only be used in the aurora time frame. So not in the summer. Trondheim and Tromso are different. Hard to compare. We also had a lot more time to explore Trondheim than Tromso.

Funnily enough, klippfisk was introduced to the area in the 1700's by a local trader that went to New England in America. As you saw, the normal way to conserve fish in Norway, was to salt it and put in barrels, or to dry it in special fish drying racks. These methods have been in use for at least 2000 years, vikings sold their dried fish in Europe. But this method, to lay the slaufghtered fish on the cliffs to dry was seen as nonproductive, but it was a hit, of course most of the fish was dried in racks, still is, but the NewEngland way became a hit in Kristiansund. So this was an early import from the British colonies in America, nowadays it is Ålesund that makes the most klippfisk.(cliff fish)

10:20 The klippfisk is the highest quality of cod like the ones you have seen dried on fish racks. The klippfish is sold to Portugal, Spain and Brazil and they use it to make bacalao - that is the dish you were trying. And I would guess the taste you could not quite place was olives or olive oil. Since it is a traditional Spanish/Portugese/Brazilian dish, many versions of bacalao is based on olive oil and/or contains olives.

Were you aware of the limited daylight on your trip and that almost everything is closed during Christmas before you visited Norway? And was taking the ferry both North and southbound worth it, or would one way be enough if you did it again? Just questions from a curious Norwegian :)
@lindsayslivealittle3 ай бұрын
Yep we were aware of the lack of daylight and traveling around the holidays with everything closed. We just wanted a truly relaxing and unique way to celebrate the holidays and we got just that. If you don't do the roundtrip, then we would suggest doing the Northbound vs the Southbound. But we found the roundtrip to be perfect. We could have done it again!

A fun note about klippfisk/bacalao is about coffee. In the early 19th century went klippfisk from Norway to Portugal, and from there on Portuguese ships to Brazil. Then there was a revolt in Brazil and the trade stopped. Norwegian ships then started to export the fish directly to Brazil. The agreement they reach was that in return they got coffee. And that was first rate quality coffee. You might have noticed that Norwegian coffee is roasted lighter than most European coffees, i guess American aswell. Since the coffee got a higher quality can they roast it lighter and also get more of the fragrance in the coffee. And if you go to Portugal or Spain should you try bacalao. Really fantastic compared to the Norwegian version

Thanks so much! We will definitely have to try when we visit Portugal or Spain.

probably the right decision not to go on the atlantic road during dark, its pretty much pointless. Hope you got your free trip for not seeing the aurora borealis, cause that definetively wasnt it lol.

They honored the free trip so we will be heading back soon enough for another great series!

You'll have a much better chance to see the northern lights outside the cities and off the ship due to the massive "light-pollution"...
