It's an End of the Line Bonus video! As I've been to Mill Hill East before, when doing the "Least Used Stations" series on the Tube, but I thought that there might just be a way of doing it again, even it it was strangely familiar ....

Having driven trains over many years to Mill Hill East as I was a driver out of Golders Green Depot in the 70's and 80's. The biggest problem was the high elevation on the viaduct during hot sunny days the rails were liable to buckle! They had to station a PWay man to keep check. During the hot summer of 76 we were on 15mph speed restriction down the line.

Once upon a time (at least until the late '60s, but possibly later), the road side of the station had a fine glass canopy emblazoned "LNER". Although the passenger service (steam-hauled) beyond Mill Hill East ceased in 1939, goods traffic (mostly for coal merchants) continued until the building of the M1 caused closure of the line. Also, the gasworks (the other side of the tracks from the road) was an unforgettable smell when the wind was in the wrong direction (which was most of the time)!

The best thing about the viaduct is the whole discovering it for for the first time drunkenly stumbling between Mill Hill East and Finchley Central after missing the last train. You go round the corner of an average residential road and suddenly there is an enormous brick viaduct in gloomy moonlight towering above you. You might wonder for a second if you are in the right place or even the right century.
@iankemp1131
@iankemp1131 8 ай бұрын
The Dollis Brook viaduct is certainly worth a visit from below, not least because it is almost invisible from the train, at least in summer with all the foliage out and with the longitudinal seats on tube trains. Mill Hill East to Finchley Central is an easy walk, about 15-20 minutes plus time to look at the viaduct. And there is a Dollis Greenway along the stream that runs all the way up to Barnet and is easily accessed from several stations. Mill Hill East's partonage is probably going due to a lot of modern buildings, especially flats, that have appeared since the previous time I was there many years ago.

Hi Geoff, some ideas/challenges for you. - What would be the shortest time to visit all least used Tube stations? - What's the maximum amount of Tube travel (either distance or number of stations) you could fit into the off peak window of 0930 to 1600 on a weekday? - Starting and finishing at the notional centre of London (Charing Cross), what is the shortest possible time to visit the geographic extremities of the Tube? Noting that Chesham is both the northernmost and westernmost station. What about the furthest north, south, east and west you can reach by TfL bus?
