Welcome to Amersham station! In Zone 9 at the end of the Metropolitan line, we kick off here in this new series, ticking off all the stations at the ends of the lines on Tube Map. What's there? What's the station like? What quirky and interesting facts are there, and if you've not been yourself - will this inspire you to go to make a trip yourself!
Also: Fares zones existed since the 1980's, it's just that they didn't first appear on the Tube Map until 2001.
There's some great photos showing the inside of Amersham signal cabin here: www.metroland.o...

Other suburbs also have this “through London” rail capability (like places on the Thameslink or the Crossrail), so I suspect Amersham has something more going for it than just the transport options.

As someone who lives across the road from the Amersham Station and can see the signal cabin from my upstairs window, I agree, it does look a little out of place. Thanks for the extra info on Amersham's relative westerly location, good trivia knowledge to have up my sleeve. What Geoff didn't say is the station is at the bottom of the shopping street and all the amenities that it offers. Old Amersham is a 30-minute walk away through Rectory Woods (left out of the station, under the bridge and then right across the road to take a footpath to the woods that has a floor plaque stating 'METROPOLITAN & GREAT CENTRAL JOINT COMMITTEE PRIVATE PROPERTY' (see if you can spot it). Come To the end of the line at Amersham, you will not be disappointed.

I remember maybee 2 years ago I wanted to film a train for my international friends. I where on a bridge and filmed down to the tracks. Once the little video where done I checked it. The train I wanted to film where all blurry and blended into the the blurry background. The fence right infront of the camera where crisp and highquality and you could clearly see every flake of paint peeling off from the rusty fence. 😂

My girlfriend and myself still use the term 'Amersham' for a 'sneeze that tickles but never comes'. It's from the book The Meaning of Liff which gives the etymological reason that it's named after the Underground station 'Where the lines constantly rattle but the train never comes'.

Used to love going to the end of the line as a kid living in Victoria, London. Went to Amersham in the early days of the A stock. Driver let me into the cab. Went from Amersham to Beconskott for a day out with mum. Went back for the first time since, only two weeks ago, to ride the '38 stock over the "north curve" to Watford and back. Arrived by car this time, I live near Buckingham now. Nostalgia inducing video.

When I moved to London I did something similar - however I only went up to the penultimate station of each line, then got on a train and reached the end station that way. The reason behind this is that I would never hear the "next stop is XXX where this train terminates" announcement if I went to the end station directly. Yes, I went to each one on foot, and that includes Heathrow and Theydon Bois. However in case of the Metropolitan I only went up to Moor Park to explore all those far-away branches.

It's noteworthy that I visited Amersham way back in 1980 but my first ever end station was in the early 60s... Hounslow West (I was living in the North West but we had relatives who lived five minutes' walk from Osterley station) I also managed to get to Ongar in the 80s and of course I ticked off Aldwych too!
