USN sent, in waves, nearly 400 aircraft to attack the Ten Go Squadron. After the Hellcats & Corsairs realized there was no Japanese air cover they strafed the IJN anti-aircraft Gun crews. Some Corsair arrived with rockets to be even more lethal. Avenger torpedo bomber only attacked one side of the Yamato to make counter flooding even more challenging. In the end only 10 USN were shot. Some of those were caught up in the huge explosion as the Yamato began to sink.... After the battle some shot down air crew were picked up by PBY’s

the yamato had 100 anti aircraft guns but the young crew were not tested or seasoned vets, the u.s. planes kept coming in waves of 30. the ship didnt see any action in the war until its sinking, it was used as command center during the pearl harbor attacks but it was was safely away from allied guns and ships at 300 miles away.. during her sinking she was heading to okinwa in a last dich effort to stop the armerican invasion from reaching shore, the plan was to use her guns or try to ram some 1500 american ships there, but she never made it, once in the pacific ocean she was quickly spotted by allied spotter planes and the attach began she had no air support because all the japanesse carries were destroyed or damaged in the battle of midway, she had a esscort of 61 ships vs 6 us carries and their 400 air craft which only had one target, this was the end of the battleship erra as everyone realised how quickly she was destoryed by aircraft not other ships as she was intended and built for..

The Yamato saw action in the battle of Leyte Gulf in October of 1944. She never dueled it out against other U.S. battleships, but she did with the small destroyers and destroyer escorts of Task Force Taffy who put up a ferocious fight against Admiral Kurita's Center Force.

Japan still had several potent aircraft carriers after the battle of Midway. Many of them were used in the battles off the Soloman Islands, and the battles in the Philippine Sea. The last of them were destroyed in the battle of Leyte Gulf in October of 1944 when Admiral Ozawa of the Northern Force lured Admiral Halsey into chasing him and leaving the Leyte beaches exposed. The biggest naval battle in history (Leyte Gulf) effectively destroyed Japan's naval strength.
@larrykopp11667 жыл бұрын
This is true. The leading Japanese Saburo Sakai in his book "Samurai" said the same thing. He said there were many pilots who failed training for this very reason and they sure could have used them, especially as the war dragged on.

When I watch information about the Yamato and its demise, I’m struck by the horrendous loss of life. However, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, they did so to ships that were at anchor and against a Nation who they were not at war. At least the sailors and the officers in board the Yamato knew what they were facing. The sailors and the officers on board the USS Arizona died during a surprise attack. Dastardly!
@alexius232 жыл бұрын
Worth noting, before departing, the Yamato Captain sent a ship wide announcement. He said this was strictly a volunteer deployment. Any crewmen could leave the ship. Then the Captain cleared out ship hospital of all crew who were disabled. Those like that were sent to a shore hospital. Finally, there was a contingent of Naval Cadet recently placed on the Yamato. The Captain sent them ashore as not being combat ready. Why was all that done? The Captain knew this was a suicide mission. By the way…all the crew remained on board

great video and nice music but i didn’t really see any torpedo strikes. during the battle after several waves of u.s. dive bombers droping five hundred pound bombs into her armored deck and fighters strafing the the anti air gun decks the torpedo planes dropped at least a dozen torpedoes into the yamato’s submerged lower decks which were less armored, its these torpedo strikes that cause the yamato to list and capsize, resulting in the massive gun torrents to rip off from there own weight and sending explosive shells clanging into each other, setting off three massive explosions that rip the hull in two, she went down in less the an hour with almost her entire crew trapped below behind sealed water tight doors, only 257 escaped from a crew of over 3000 ..

Would have been interesting if the two carrier task forces 58.1 and 58.3 were further away and Adm. Mitscher didn't launch his planes and the original plan of Adm. Spruance to send Adm. Morton Deyo's task force of six battleships (New Jersey, Missouri, Wisconsin, Indiana, Massachusetts and South Dakota, also the battlecruisers Alaska and Guam) what would have happened if they had met up before the carriers found Yamato? How badly would have 54 16" guns pounded guns pounded yamato? Probably as bad as the airstrikes......
@Ambaryerno8 жыл бұрын
Yamato wouldn't have stood a chance against ONE Iowa-class Battleship, much less three of them PLUS the trio of South Dakota-classes. The radar range-finding and fire control available to them was light years ahead of the technology Japan had available. Yamato may have had the bigger guns, but the Americans could open fire at longer range, and do so FAR more accurately.
@1987phillybilly8 жыл бұрын
Ambaryerno...as I said, just as bad as the airstrikes
@Ambaryerno8 жыл бұрын
@Batman The Japanese scouts and consorts would have had no better radar and fire control than Yamato herself (even American DESTROYERS had better fire control than Japans' battleships). I don't care HOW many eyes you've got. Mk.I Eyeball vs. radar-directed fire control WILL lose. Especially if the engagement is at night, where battleships preferred to operate to protect themselves from air strikes. Range is irrelevant if you can't put rounds on target with accuracy, and Yamato's absolute range advantage was nowhere NEAR significant enough (only two miles) to offset the accuracy of the American fire control systems. Furthermore, the American guns may have been smaller than Yamato's, but they were all-around simply BETTER. More reliable, more accurate. The secondary guns (IE the 5" on the Iowas) would be irrelevant in a ship-to-ship duel between battleships. Their purposes was for dealing with aircraft and smaller ships, and the secondary batteries wouldn't even scratch the paint around the armored belt. Torpedoes, likewise, are also irrelevant since battleships don't carry them, so in a 1v1 duel they're a non-factor. Even if you allow consorts, the Americans still have the advantage in being able to engage their opponents with accuracy BEFORE THE JAPANESE EVEN KNOW THEY ARE THERE. Look at the Battle of Surigao Strait: The only warning Southern Force had that they were about to get shellacked was when the first shells struck home (and note: there was not ONE Iowa-class battleship involved in the route of Nishimura's battleship column. Most of them were actually Pearl Harbor survivors that were repaired, refit, and refloated, and had the exact same fire control and search radars equipped by Iowa and her sisters). As for the morale of "defending their homeland," ask the kamikaze how well that worked out for THEM. You're grasping at straws, and betraying your utter ignorance of the facts.

*****...you need to look up the armor ratios again, not a whole lot of difference between the Iowa's and Yamato. AGAIN, we are taking battleships here, what is this torpedo stuff?? 54 16" guns pounding your battleship?? YEAH...you're a real Einstein to think yamato could stand up to that!

Japan's steel was by FAR inferior to the steel used by American shipbuilders, so the Iowas were able to get more mileage out of 12 inches of armor than Yamato could out of 16. Why do you think Japan started the goddamned war in the first place? Because the Japanese home islands are resource-poor, starved of quality iron and everything else a modern industrial society needs. Oh wait, this is where you insert some comment about Japan's magical steel katanas that could CUT THROUGH an Iowa-class battleship, because you don't have any functional real-world knowledge about ANYTHING and get it all from fucking anime. Now go back to your tentacle porn and let the adults have a grown-up conversation.

It should be noted in case those were curious the reason she pointed her main cannons up was because they were loaded with an experimental 'beehive' anti-air round. Which proved to be useless.
