Some more points of interest. JFK's crew 'acquired' a 37mm Anti-tank cannon to mount on their boat. They found it to be effective enough to replace it with the 37mm autocannon from an Aircobra fighter. Which THAT proved so effective it became standard armament for every PT boat afterwards.

I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.

The rescue of JFK and crew was entirly down to one Australian Coastwatcher Reg Evans and two Solomon Islander men, their job was to operate behind Japanese lines and report on enemy troop and naval movements by SW radio. He watched the sinking at night and sent two of his Solomon Islander men to investigate, they returned with the coconut and Reg passed the co ordinates on. Reg survived the war, so JFK entertained and thanked Reg personaly at the White House. Coastwatchers were spread across the Pacific and operated in secret until after the war. A total of 33 Australian and 22 Islander people Coastwatchers were killed by the Japanese. US Admiral of the Fleet, William F. Halsey, World War II "The Coastwatchers saved Guadalcanal, and Guadalcanal saved the South Pacific".

Amagiri was the head of a column of four Japanese destroyers, Amagiri, Hagikaze, Arashi and Shigure. Hagikaze, Arashi, and Shigure opened fire on "two burning torpedo boats", which was just the halves of PT-109. Tameichi Hara was the captain of Shigure and wrote about the encounter in his book "Japanese Destroyer Captain".

By this time, it had been discovered by the submarine service that the torpedoes were defective. At Pearl Harbor the navy would modify torpedoes as they came for service on the submarines. The PTs continued to use defective torpedoes throughout the war, only getting the replacement torpedoes near the end of the war.

information from wikipedia: PT-109 was an 80-foot Elco PT boat (patrol torpedo boat) last commanded by Lieutenant (junior grade) John F. Kennedy, future United States president, in the Solomon Islands campaign of the Pacific theater during World War II. Kennedy's actions in saving his surviving crew after PT-109 was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer earned him several commendations and made him a war hero. Back problems stemming from the incident required months of hospitalization at Chelsea Naval Hospital and plagued him the rest of his life. Kennedy's postwar campaigns for elected office referred often to his service on PT-109.

It's sad to see he was assassinated in such a way, but also good to see how he had always been a good leader, leading his men out of miseries and tragedies. In March 2015, in Tokyo, the "JFK: His life and legacy" exhibition was held, where Caroline Kennedy, JFK's daughter, and Kazuko Hanami, wife of the captain of the destroyer that collided with the boat, met and confirmed the partnership between Japan and the U.S. At the exhibition, a letter sent by JFK to Captain Hanami in 1953 and a photograph of him with a handwritten message "To Captain Hanami, late enemy and present friend" were displayed. The two had been corresponding, and letters of encouragement were sent from Captain Hanami and former crew members of the destroyer when JFK ran for president. This was featured in the official magazine "American View" of the U.S. Embassy in Japan.

I enlisted in the Navy before HS graduation in 1976. And, in fact I was a good swimmer, yet had to sign an affidavit testifying as such. Nevertheless, all including myself of about 75 men in Company 334 @ Orlando were instructed in basic swimming, treading water & drown-proofing techniques. I recall about 7 or 10% had to march in the evening after classes & drills & report to the Swimming Pool for remedial lessons. I don't remember if the remedial class rejoined as a whole company for the advanced drown-proofing lessons; the hardest requirement being to have enough confidence & skill to not panic.

The Bofors 40 mm gun has a rate of fire of 120-160 rounds per minute (rpm) per barrel, depending on the speed at which four-round clips are loaded. The practical rate of fire is closer to 80-100 rpm because the rounds are fed into the breech from clips that need to be replaced manually. The rate of fire increases slightly when the barrels are closer to the horizon because gravity helps feed the top-mounted magazine. So yarnhub pls change :D

When they were shooting the cans about seven or eight, Germans came out the woods screaming don’t shoot. I have six kids. They don’t know who was more surprised the Germans were the Americans one guy in the squad actually went his pants. Another slam dunk video!! I love the content you guys put out, I’ve been subscribed since the beginning. If I could change anything about this video, it would have been the accent of Kennedy. Keep up the great work @YarnHub!

Ok, this is a relatively minor thing, but this error has showed up before and will continue to do so as long as you're making ww2 stuff. The animation for the 40mm Bofors gun is completely wrong. It does not just blaze away like a normal machine gun, it fires slowly. (about 120 rpm) Each barrel recoils quite a lot each time it fires, usually fired in alternating sequence for multiple mounts. There's plenty of archival footage for this, or you could use your sponsor War Thunder as reference for your animators. The shells it fires are quite large, so they're good candidates for slow mo bullet shots you like to do. I know this is a nitpick, but Yarnhub has shown a consistent ability to improve and I hope this is one thing that you do improve.

Your animation is getting better all the time. Next time you do a video about JFK, you might want to work on his deep, modified Boston accent.

"It doesn't look like much, but she's got it where it counts." -Word! And I bet it would make point-2 past light speed, plus Jack probably made a few modifications himself. When the crew arrived Jack told them, "We're in a bit of a rush so if you'll get on board, we'll get going." 😆

I am not surprised that PT-109 ignited so rapidly & hot. These boats had twin Packard V-12 engines that burned aviation fuel (gasoline/petrol).

The animation just keeps getting more realistic. JFK had a thick Boston accent. There a couple of parts that may have been edited so you can tell the next YARN! JFK swam by himself hoping to find other ships using the shipping lanes. He swam out to a very small island that could not sustain them. S8 they went to a larger island. Probably the one depicted with the natives. I thought they ferried JFK to a coastal watch area? It takes me about an hour to do one mile in a calm pool. I also rhought his back was already weak? So many parts of the story make it seem more incredible with each telling.

My goodness. I had known about the PT 109 but not of the subsequent missions of the PT 59. Jack Kennedy would go on being a President of the USA in the early 1960's - one quite remarkable US PRESIDENT.

JFK was a fairly brave man in WWII. A movie was actually made about his exploits sometime when he became president. Well that's what it looked like to me. From what I saw of the movie itself.
