Dr. Faith Banks, DVM offers some truly helpful advice on how to assess your pet’s quality of life, and discusses some of the quality of life markers we can watch for to ensure that our pet’s geriatric phase is managed well. For dogs, quality of life can be detected through noting changes in their lifestyle; with cats, more changes in behaviour. Ultimately, is your pet managing the changes happily, or more sad, depleted or withdrawn? Please subscribe to RescueDiaries.

There is a huge psychological component to all of this, especially if it is your first time, as it was for me yesterday. I did not expect her to die naturally but you have to be comfortable that you are not early and also that it is not too late. Maybe I was late as I have a shepherd with hip dyspepsia and at the end she needed daily injections of pain killer but there were other conditions as well. You have to do whatever you possible can to make the end of life experience as comfortable without being selfish and keeping her alive for your benefit only. I didn't think I knew but when my healthy eater lost her appetite that became the decision point. At that point I decided that I have to do what is right for her not me and we put her down. Of course I am devastated but I believe that was the right moment and I can live with my decision. I brought the vet came over to the house and she refused to put her down because I had doubts. It was 3 days later that she returned a 2nd time and we put her down. In summary, try to take selfishness out of the equation and make the decision that you think you pet would want. To be in excruciating pain at the end of the line sucks as much for your pet as it would for you. Just make the choices that your conscience can live with.

Cayrick Pan, thank you for this, sharing what you and your loved one went through will help a lot of people, losing a pet, grief, letting go are hugely personal experiences, there is no right and wrong, faced with the decision of saying good bye, we all try our best. I believe that what you highlighted in your personal account, were some of the reasons why we reached out to Dr. Banks, we all need some guidance, someone to strike a match and shed some light with this extremely difficult passage. Thanks for researching out. Gervais.

If you just saw this message and your dog experiences this, give him homemade food for kidney disease. Boil him something good. My vet wanted to euthanize my dog, telling me he doesn't eat. He hates kibble and other dog food, especially after experiences at the clinic. He still eats natural homemade meals.

My dog recently passed away a week ago or less. It was the weekend when the Rams were playing for Super Bowl. The signs that start showing was within 12 hours of him passing away. He was diagnosed with heart failure and collapse trachea. My dog was also older and had no history of anything because he was a homeless dog. Thank God his last hours weren’t as bad as I thought they would be. His stomach did descend and what the clue for me is when he stopped coughing. I knew the liquid was building up in his lungs. He started pacing because he needed air and also as it was a hot day. Thank God he did not sugar for too long but he’s just passed away in his bed.

My dog is 15 she's an Aussie. She is very young at heart but she's lost her ability to "hold it". But she's so happy... She's messing up my carpets... We tried diapers and it wasn't good for her she got skin issues. We try to quarantine her but she is so spirited she wants to break out and she has dementia I think because she is impossible to train not to break out. She used to be so obedient. I know she's not ready because she is full of joy when she is the first to spot the mail man for our other dog to guard the house. I love my Storm girl. She's given me the best years I swear... She's the coolest dog in the world

I AM, this is such a beautiful testimony to the endless bound, love, between You and your sweet dog. What is her name? Everything you say is 100% true and because we love our dogs and the love the gave us that it makes the decision of letting them go so complicated and unbearable. Follow your heart, if you have a good relationship with your vet, you may want to consult with them as well. I am so grateful for your testimony. Please take good care of yourself and the "coolest dog in the world".

I lost my dog of 14.5 last Saturday, that’s true he stopped doing things he always enjoyed doing for 14.5 years. My toughest thought is that yes he didn’t enjoy but what if the treatment can make him better to do those thing?!, what if the vet misdiagnosed him?? On Friday I went to a vet and he told me my dog had a DKA needs IV fluid sooner then sent me to ER, the ER vet said he would never go back to how he was, he will need inslins if he could recover from DKA, also other complications would make DKA comes back at any moment then u went to another ER they didnt do the bloodwork but they also said similar thing and found out he had hypertension! I most unsure part for me is that he was eating and playing. His toys 1 months ago, it’s too quick for him to be illness like that… also he didnt look like sick.. he was still smiling…

Thank you for sharing. Most dogs are hero dogs and they will push through the pain in ways that somehow makes it impossible for us to know just how much they are suffering. You've just had your heart ripped out of your chest, grieving may be putting all of those questions and doubts in front of your eyes. We did this video for that exact reason, loosing a pet is one of the hardest thing anyone will ever have to go through, there is no one way of doing it, we are all different, you have done your best with what you knew at the time. You sound like a very committed parent, I am so sorry for your loss. May I ask what was your dog,s name?

Vets say he's too full of life for euthanasia.

Yep that’s me I’m that type of person that peeks to see if there dog has peacefully passed away during their sleep but unfortunately in my dogs case he’s supposably shedding which is an abnormal thing for a miniature toy poodle he’s been around since I was small and he’s still going on to almost be about 15or 16 when I first got him he was actually the one who picked us as his owners we got him from my uncle Jessie who proudly bestowed upon my baby his sill old name Bentley Fresh Rodriguez but we’ve recently heard from our local veterinarian that Bentley might have kidney failure and I don’t know what I’d do without my baby boy 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Agreed Marg, Dr Banks has some incredible insights on aging pets and how you/we can help them cope with aging. There is a love and compassion that emanate from Dr Banks and I am afraid the video does not really do her justice. I don't think it was a coincidence that she was given Faith as her birth name. Thanks for your comments, always. Gervais ps did you notice I used a photo of Sister on the thumbnail?

My dog was spayed for a long time. I notice a lump in her nipple took her to the vet. Next thing surgery to remove and biopsy mass. Just two day after 8 days after surgery. It came back as breast cancer stage 3 supposedly aggressive!! I have been crying for two straight day. She is 9 years old, 8 pds yorkie mix & get her teeth clean ever 6 mths. I feed her rice and chicken or farm fresh food or royal Caine nothing with corn.. Is there a way of healing naturally. My mom died from pancreatic cancer and then went on remission for a whole year. I know how hash chemo was on her weak body. 1 year later it spread like wild fire. Please any advice?

My collie mix has large cell lymphoma. She's only 4 and a half. I've had her since she was 12 months old. Behavioural problems and all. I've been working with her to overcome her anxieties and reactive behaviour, but now it's coming to a close. I'm going with palliative care. This is the 2nd time I've been faced with making that decision to euthanise. My last dog was 11 and suffered from spondylolysis and lost her ability to walk. She was put to sleep a week later because her quality of life became zero. A difficult decision but the correct one. Took me months to get over her. Now with my collie mix, she's still able to walk around and eat and poo normally. Going for walks is out now because she gets tired really quickly and slows to a slow walk. So unfair for such a young dog. She spends her day just lying down, occasionally going outside to pee and stuff. I think I'm days away from calling in the vet to euthanise.
