What is an outrageous was that NVMe prices were dropping and then WD and Samsung cut production to skyrocket NVMe prices instead of moving forward with larger and more affordable options.

It should become a standard for SSDs to reveal if they are using SLC, MLC, TLC or QLC NAND !!!! Right now they don't even mention that anywhere on the net, let alone in paid video reviews like those! It should be absolutely mandatory!

we need better storage technology. like interdimensional storage. in that sense storage becomes as small as an atom that can fit petabyte

I just got myself one WD Black 8TB open box on Poshmark for $300. *I saved myself over $US500 DOLLARS!* The funny thing is I hadn't even heard of Poshmark before, it just came in in my Google search when I was looking for an 8TB NVME drive (Gen 4). And when I saw the price I couldn't resist it. I could tell the drive was new because I had to initialize the drive via disk manager for Windows to pick it up. *Windows 11 Pro ate up .73TB of that space by default.* That's 750GB which I believe is way too much. Now, out of the 8TB only 7.27 TB is available for storage.

Storage will have to quadruple density (two genetations doubling) for 8TB to come down to viable consumer pricing (that of a 2TB drive today) This isn't happening for 10 years

Hey Microcenter, I want one near me in PDX ;) The old Fry's Electronics down in Wilsonville would be an ideal location for this new store... And NO I don't use crap sites like Twitter nor Facebook so NO hashtags for you :P

One other serious issue with constantly swapping games out due to limited space is the longevity of the SSD constantly swapping out 100;200 even 300 GB or larger files I'm looking at you ARK survival evolved. Will wear your drives down FAST!
@trsskaterАй бұрын
You say games are getting large which is correct. But a 1TB drive and fit 6 largest you showed. So if you got a 2 TB drive you would still have to pick and choose but if you are playing more than 12 single player games at 1 time choose one and finish it since when its done you wont play it again anyway and save the rest of the space for the few multiplayer games you play with your friends or a long that are usually much smaller. You will have lots of space for games. I have 12 games installed right now and I'm really only playing 2 of them.

If I need more than 2TB I am setting up a NAS. Having 8TB of data which is potentially really important on a single disk is a real bad idea

I did a raid storage years ago with wd hdds. Terrible idea.
@cristovieneya899714 күн бұрын
Not if you Raid it or use some sort of back up software to clone the drive as you save files on it.. So, essentially you would need 2 8TB drives, which is what i am trying to accomplish. I;m just waiting on another break out deal to get the second one. As I mentioned above, I found a great deal on Poshmark for $300 dollars (Oct. 2024), saving myself over $500 dollars on one single purchase.
@chuckaeronut8 күн бұрын
Whether you have 2TB or 8TB on a volume, and whether that volume resides on a single physical disk or is spread across many, even with hot redundancy, you always need a backup.
@traingp76 күн бұрын
You can buy two 4tb drives and put them in raid 0 for less money and be twice as fast as this single drive.
@jemborgАй бұрын
I'll get real for a minute... That's a _beautiful drive_ but you really only need a 1 or 2 TB fast SSD for a game drive as it's pretty easy to swap your game installs between that and a cheap large HDD. As long as you pop the game files back into the same location it's sweet. Steam can do it for you and there's methods with EPIC etcetera too. If you examine your playing habits you'll probably not do it that often. Yeah, so with a bit of managing it's just as fast and a lot cheaper.

Screw that plan, buy 2 - 990 pro 4tb set it up in a RAID 0 = 8 TB faster speeds too, you are welcome! WAY CHEAPER !

What about people that need 24tb? Or 40tb? Redundant storage? 4tb doesn’t scale. We need 16tb sticks. Hopefully the price fixing will end one day.

Yes I'm flippin' sure Micro Center would love to sell us all drives for $1,000. Get bent, I'm not paying 2019 SSD prices going into 2025. I can comfortably run multiple drives and pool them in software.

Meanwhile, Enterprise SSD at 2.5inch using U.2/.3 can easily surpassed 10TB barrier, yet, we are stuck at m.2 at 8TB?? Sure it cost twice or more, but removing the Enterprise stuff, like capacitors, and 'reserved' flash space, it can easily be US$1K.

The link above, to take you "All Western Digital"... you are going to have a hard time selling this drive, as either the posted link is incorrect, or the URL redirect is setup incorrectly, because that takes you to the main site, filtered to both "WD" and "EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES"
