Today I'm going over EndeavourOS, one of my favorite Linux distros. It's based on Arch and provides an easy installation process, allowing users to choose from a wide range of desktop environments. The package manager also makes updating and installing new software extremely easy. This tutorial is perfect for new users. I also explain how to install, remove, and update software, along with a few tips using KDE Plasma.

Balena Etcher works great when I tested it, but the official EndeavourOS installation guide suggests to use a different tool because of "privacy concerns" with etcher. discovery.endeavouros.com/installation/create-install-media-usb-key/2021/03/ I typically use Ventoy and I'm planning to make a video about it in the future, but the point of this video was to make it easy for newcomers to install the OS. This wasn't meant to be a tutorial on Ventoy or other bootable USB tools.

to uninstall software I recommend to type "yay -Rns program-name" instead of "yay -R program-name" -n to remove any config backups the program might create -s to remove it's dependecies (that other programs don't depend on so it's safe)

I was a linux administrator, oracle database administrator, windows administrator, network administrator for decades. Then I retired. It's been almost ten years now. The only reason I ran windows was for games. always preferred Linux. Recently discovered the masses of games which now run on linux, so here I go. Thanks for the beginning tips.

Nice, currently on openSUSE but have been distro hopping and EndeavourOS looks like a great option. I've previously used Manjaro, but I like that EndeavourOS is closer to vanilla Arch. In the command line it has a capital Y which I'm guessing that is the default, if you just hit enter it should be the same as typing y then enter.
@PhazerTech
@PhazerTech Жыл бұрын
Cool yea I tried openSUSE but to be honest it felt slow. Booting up, shutting down, downloading and updating software all felt slow when compared to other distros. I tried Manjaro too but oddly enough it felt like there were more bugs in it compared to regular Arch. And yea I know about capital Y, it's just a habit at this point since not every prompt has a capital Y.

i would say linux from scratch is on a bigger level than arch/gentoo when it comes to difficulty, can't say anything about slackware, but i heard it is also hard. im currently using ultramarine linux, its based on fedora, because i wanted a more stable system than arch. great video
@PhazerTech

I might try linux from scratch one day when I'm bored and feeling up to it, just to say I did it haha. I haven't tried ultramarine before but it sounds interesting, I'll check it out. Tbh it's been a while since I've tried fedora and I didn't spend much time with it. The same goes for opensuse, but I've been thinking about giving them another go now since I always hear great things. Thanks for your input!

@ghostlyflapjack Thanks for the info, to be honest trying LFS isn't high on my priority list. For people who want to get into driver/software development then it seems like a natural step. But in my case, Linux is a tool to get other sort of work done. How would you rate Gentoo's security and performance compared to Arch?
@PhazerTech
@PhazerTech Жыл бұрын
@ghostlyflapjack Good to know, I might check it out since it sounds like it has potential for embedded systems as well. My background is in robotics so I've worked with various SOCs and embedded systems, some of which don't even have an OS. So who knows, I might come across a project in the future where doing a more customized kernel makes the most sense, so my last comment isn't entirely accurate haha. These are definitely things I can spend more time with and dive more into. And that's great to hear Gentoo has superior documentation since the Arch wiki is generally well regarded.

@@6cmcnc6 Thanks! Check out my Linux playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLlLR7EXXYZ0bFjsMf_DkHIiGvJlToeecV I do most of my guides on Kubuntu because I think Ubuntu based distros are slightly more noob friendly. But I also point out how to install everything on Arch and Fedora distros as well, so these videos should still be very helpful.

lol i should go to less trouble if i were you. it made me laugh and reminded me that attempting to exist in a _foreground/background_ duality is another great way to unexpectedly end up getting my head snacked off by _something_ unforeseen 🐈‍⬛

@@lucifer-v It's not much trouble at all, it has knobs to control how fast it changes colors and brightness. I can make it super slow if I want to 😀 And yes gotta watch out for those things.. lol it's interesting how basically everything is a duality of some kind, with a grey area in between.

@@PhazerTech It has been better for me than Linux Mint for game development and gaming. I use KDE which definitely has more features than Cinnamon including a file indexer. KDE is not as I should say consistent as Cinnamon and it does have a few bugs. Linux Mint twice completely broke for me. EndeavorOS has broken for me a single time, even though it is Arch based. The two things that were a minor annoyance for me were the Grub issue which recently broke many arch systems. It was easy to fix. The second issue is the on-going issue with Glibc2 which has broken Timeshift. There as another bug a while ago which messed up some themes for Firefox and Thunderbird. Other than that, there have been no major issues. The reason why I sometimes wish to switch back to Mint is because these minor bugs may not be present on it. However, Mint also has a build in compositor for Cinnamon which introduces input lag in game. In KDE you can turn it off. Mint also uses PPAs which can make the system unstable and also doesn't ship the latest kernel which some games require.

@@theplaymakerno1 Your experiences are similar to mine. It seems there isn't a perfect distro and all of them will encounter bugs at some point. But EndeavourOS hasn't broken on me yet, and the bugs I have encountered were relatively easy to fix. One thing that's an on going issue for me with all distros is that there doesn't appear to be a good solution to multiple monitor scaling. X11 doesn't allow per monitor scaling, the scaling you choose gets applied to all monitors. So lately I've been using Wayland instead because it offers this feature, but there are too many bugs that prevent it from being reliable. I hope Wayland progresses and they get the bugs fixed soon. Also I might try OpenSuse, I've heard great things about it and is supposed to be super stable. The btrfs snapshot feature also sounds useful in case anything does break.
@theplaymakerno1
@theplaymakerno1 Жыл бұрын
@@PhazerTech That multi-monitor problem that you are talking about is driver and DE related. You might have one monitor's screen go into another screen. That was the problem I had with Linux Mint XFCE. To fix it, simply turn one of the monitors off by deactivating it, either in a DE provided Display Menu or simply by unplugging. Usually, turning monitors on gradually makes them scale well. You can also use xrandr or something, I haven't tried it.
@PhazerTech
@PhazerTech Жыл бұрын
@@theplaymakerno1 Let me explain more. My main display is a 4K TV, but at that resolution everything is too small, so I prefer to use a scaling setting of 150% or 175%. My second display is a 1080p display and it looks best with 100% scaling. The only way to assign different scaling to each monitor is with Wayland. If I set 175% scaling using X11 then it gets applied to both monitors, but then everything is too big on the 1080p display with 175% scaling.

Arch breaks when you don't update the system for a few months and then update. Or in rare cases when updating without reading the changelog because you have to update in a very specific way to not break the system. Ugh, the last thing I want is to have my system throw a tantrum when I've been away for a while and get back to it.
@PhazerTech
@PhazerTech 10 ай бұрын
Yea that's certainly a possibility when you don't update for a long time. I recommend updating every week or two. You don't want to do it everyday either.
