I think a lot of young women who do this is because of the high cost of living, uni fees, etc. When I was 16 and getting into uni, I had an orphan's pension, the government covered all my uni expenses including books and housing along with a monthly stipend (this was in Italy). I was cared for and not the struggling starving student who finishes school with debt. I worked part time (part of my nursing degree requirements) and had extra money for other things. I know for fact that today I think I would not be as lucky, everything is so much more expensive today vs back then and benefits back then were far more generous.
